Has anyone tried the ghost walk or Cathedral light show in St Albans before?
https://bedatingbeautiful.com/haunted-romance-date-ideas-in-hertfordshire-this-halloween/
So I know the Cathedral bells ring every hour to denote which hour it is, and also every quarter of an hour, but there seem to be some other rings going on.
At 9pm tonight (Monday) there was an elaborate melodic ring, what's that for? Does it have a name?
When is the first ring of the day? When is the last ring of the day? Is it the same throughout the week?
Are there any other 'elaborate melodic' ringings scheduled throughout the week?
Which ringings are done by people, and which are done by machine automatically?
So many questions!

Hi All. I've written about my experience at the Waffle house in St Albans. Hope you enjoy :) x

Anyone else noticed this? We live in Sopwell and the number of cars with modified exhausts seems to have shot up lately. Presume they're flooring it up the A414 - hell it could be one person but it's crazy loud. I get people have their hobbies but it's getting a bit ridiculous now.
Any idea which pubs have the cricket on all day? Bonus point if it has a pub garden! Cheers

Hi there,
I was just wondering if anyone can give some insight into the easiest and best London neighbourhoods to day trip to from St Albans by train/underground for a bit of shopping and lunch?
Hi all,
My boyfriend and I are SO excited to be moving to St Albans in July! Our 6yo greyhound isn't so sure yet, so he wanted to know about any enclosed parks/places for the odd run off the lead, and if there's any sort of a greyhound community in St Albans for new long dog friends.
Thanks so much in advance!
Hello, I am currently conducting research as part of my PhD with the University of Kent. I am looking for participants from all over the UK to complete the following survey about online sexual behaviours, attitudes, and beliefs (please be advised that there are some questions surrounding sexual abuse). If you can spare 10 minutes to complete the questionnaire it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

I'm thinking of moving to St Albans after a relatively short stint in London. Currently live under a Heathrow flight path in SW London and it's not cool. How is St Albans in that respect? I can see that there are planes that do fly near from both Luton and Heathrow, but I don't think the noise would be as bad as it is where I am now. I can tolerate the odd plane coming over, especially in the day time, what I don't want is significant noise when I'm trying to sleep.
Hi all, I am currently due to buy a new house in Smallford just next to Ellenbrook fields. The house is lovely and the area seems nice ... but we have just learned of the plan to build a new quarry on the field!
The original plan was rejected - appealed and also rejected. The developers then raised a second application which is in review ...
From reading the councils local mineral plan .. it seems like there needs to be exceptional circumstances to sterilise a mineral supply. So my current assumption is that it will, at some point, be a quarry. I know there is the concern around the contaminated water below etc but as soon as a developer can prove that they won't impact that, then that concern is alleviated in the planners mind, and with the site providing the bulk of HCC's aggregate ( 9Mt out of the 20Mt they need for then next 10 years ), it seems like they will find it hard to reject it permanently.
I'm wondering what others think about this? And what impact have you found from the other quarries in the area in terms of noise, pollution, traffic ... and on house prices when living near the area?
Our small paper/cardboard recycling boxes blew away in the storm and haven’t been seen since…
Any idea how to get new ones?
Hi everybody, I am hoping to travel to the USA on Sunday, the 6th of March. Therefore I need a test on Saturday the fifth. But trying to find a provider is proving very difficult. Can anyone suggesr somewhere offering a PCR or antigen test?
It needs to be back the same day
Many thanks to you Albans residents
Anyone know about the reason or cause of this at Westminster Lodge today?
Hi everyone,
As part of my PhD research, I'm conducting a study on jury decision making in sexual assault cases in the UK. The study takes about 45 minutes and involves watching a 30-min educational video and reading a fictional rape trial transcript followed by some short questions.
I know it's a long one on a very sensitive topic, but at the end of the survey, you can enter a draw to win a £50 Amazon voucher (this data will be stored separately so that all survey responses are completely anonymous) and I will be incredibly grateful! We want this research to have an impact and to do that we need your help.
Please note the survey is not compatible with mobile devices so must be completed on a laptop/computer.
To take part, you must be eligible for jury duty in England and Wales (i.e., must be between 18-75 years old, have lived in the UK for 5 years or more and be registered to vote).
Please click on the following link to participate in the study: https://kentpsych.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5bZ9cednWZK75kO
If you have any questions regarding the study, please contact the researcher (smk41@kent.ac.uk) or supervisor (c.c.ociardha@kent.ac.uk).
Thank you so much for your time!
Sincerely,
Sarah Kelleher
Please check out this survey on social attitudes!
Hi there! We are researchers at the University of Kent working on a study on social attitudes among the British public. We want to recruit a sample that is representative of the whole of UK and therefore we need respondents from St Albans! It is hoped that the project could provide valuable information on some understudied factors that underlie attitudes towards different social groups. Please consider participating in the survey on the link below if you identify as British and live in the United Kingdom. Please note that in order to participate you have to be at least 18 years old. It takes about 10-15 minutes to complete the survey. Thank you so much!

I’m hoping to start a little thread for sort of hidden gems. Not things visitors would necessarily want to know, but things locals might want to take a fresh look at. Some of mine:
The Alban Way. Such a nice place to walk, especially from about a mile outside of the town
Highfield Park. Endless interest and a wild feel.
The Watercress Bed. So peaceful and beautiful.
The Beer Shop. No explanation is necessary.
The Cinema. So grateful it’s here.

Hi there,
Can anyone recommend a piano teacher in the area - for my 9 year old, thanks in advance!
Hi all, I’d like to spend more time painting and I have little space at home. Does anyone know if there are things like studios to rent in or near St Albans? It will be much more convenient and somewhere to just get away from the four walls!
Thank you all
We’re planning to get a cat and wanted opinion on few things:
My husband and I rather adopt (than shop), we don’t have any breed/type preference (I’m just partial to gingers because my first cat was one) and not totally against getting a sort of feral kitten (as long as it’s comfortable with humans). I would prefer a young cat so it can grow up and bond with us but again, quite flexible there and don’t necessarily want a newborn.
Is this sufficient space and activity for the cat; keeping it true to the animal’s nature and liking? My previous cat was a outdoor/house cat in a big house and in another country, so not sure what is peoples’ experience with cats in flats in this area.
Thanks for reading these long questions and really appreciate your help and advice! Cheers!
