/r/squatting
r/squatting is a space for the squatters of the world. We advocate for squatter’s rights and believe everyone has a right to a roof over their head. Whether it's occupying vacant land or vacant property for personal, communal or political reasons, this is the place to talk about it.
Squatting is the act of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied space or building that the squatter does not own, rent or otherwise have permission to use.

hi! i’ve just moved back to ireland after a period away and my housing situation is very dire so i’m quite desperate to find somewhere. i know dublin has a bit of a squat scene and i was wondering if any of ye are here or have any contacts :-)
There this old gorgeous house that went vacant around the pandemic. I went to check it out but scared myself out of it.
I saw it again after 2 or 3 years have gone by.. and someone else definitely got in no problem.
They left 3 foot of uninterrupted trash on every floor piles of clothes piles of cups piles of tp roles stacked hoarder style.
All doors and windows were locked and could not be opened from the inside somehow with just one way in or out
It was absolutely the most unnerving thing I've seen.
It was really hard to tell if the previous owner was totally nuts, or if it was some crackhead. There was just so much inside there it was absolutely bizarre.
So damn sad this happened to such a cool & unique house like that.
This could have housed 20 people easily.
Just thought I'd share.
So I really know nothing about squatting, and sorry if this is the wrong place… also hopefully this doesn’t offend anyone since I really just want to do this for my own personal enjoyment and not out of survival or necessity… but for as long as I can remember it’s been a dream of mine to have a place where I can plug in my guitar and crank my amp as loud as it can fucking possibly go and just let it rip. Like I seriously feel at this point it might be a necessity to maintain my mental health and sanity, because I have weird hang ups about making any noise in my apartment that fuck with my anxiety and paranoia.
Anyway… for the most part I feel like I’m savvy enough to figure out a source of power, even if I end up just using a generator or something… but I’d like advice on finding a place that 1) is remote enough/isolated enough from residential areas that there wouldn’t be neighbors calling in noise complaints, 2) is relatively hidden, even a smaller space hidden within a larger structure, like a basement or utility closet, that could fairly reliably be secured from unwanted access so I can leave some gear there without it getting stolen. I’m thinking a place that only has one means of egress that I could bolt or chain up and keep locked when I’m not around.
Since I don’t know shit about the process at all, if there’s any general pitfalls or shit to watch out for in the process feel free to clue me in. The biggest challenge I can foresee is it seems inevitable that the loud music will eventually be noticed by someone which makes it fairly likely that eventually someone is gonna get the bright idea to try and steal my shit. If the idea of having any semblance of security while I’m not there (the majority of the time most likely) then I could probably get by with a minimal setup as long as I could easily pack it in and out with me each time.
Thanks in advance for any pointers, this is just a random idea that popped into my head because I discovered pretty much all legit practice spaces are booked beyond capacity
This might be a dumb question, but usually when you are exploring an abandoned place and you get caught, you can end up in jail. Can you claim squatters rights to avoid these consequences?
Hello World! Recently I became squatter. Now I'm taking my place in coastal town, in 3 floor building. I would like to know if there is more squatters in Estonia. I am also open to those who may want to join. My goal is to create creative space where someone can even spend some time living there. Feel free to ask anything
I'm not getting positive answers so far from the legal advice forum,
But I think it would be a great argument for squatting. If arrested or whatever, this is a great argument in court that even though the government has enlisted state of emergency powers I am still not adequately housed...
Hey all. I’m a filmmaker currently making a feature film with one of the leads being a squatter. The story is pure advocacy for squatting, as I’m greatly passionate about it for an array of political & philosophical reasons. I wanted to talk one-on-one with those of you who practice to hear your stories and experiences, as I’m dedicated to representing this community as best I can. If you’re interested in giving an interview hmu - a special thanks will be given in the credits (No identity required, anon is fine. Interviews will not be recorded). — Thanks everyone
I am looking to become a homeowner of my “baby fathers” abandoned home so for context i lived there since I was 15/16f he’s 50m. I’m 18 now The house is getting substantial mold damage by the week because he broke the windows and the utilities cut.
He has since abandoned his entire family and probably won’t be coming back in fear of life in prison and deportation.. I doubt he is making his mortgage payments and paying taxes and the house is just sitting there. P.s he is married but separated there’s 2 names on the deed I’m assuming. Idk if that helps
How do I go about paying taxes, bills etc what are the steps. Do I start to invest in fixing it to make it live-able again. I have a baby and I’m homeless atm. It’s a great family home I just need advice thx.
I’m not currently staying in the house anymore because of the health hazard but I want to start living in it again.
Does anyone have leads in Brooklyn? Also open to joining/forming a team. Please PM me :)
hey there, hoping this is the right place to ask but i was looking for some tips and directions towards more info.
ive got some buddies in Walker county TX who are seemingly going to be evicted from their apartment and are tied up in some shit with the place theyre renting from. sounds like the goal is to squat in the apartment as long as they can, til they find jobs, another place, etc. i want them to be safe and wanna help out how i can (despite being on the other side of the country), so i was wondering if anyone had any info i could send their way about squatters rights or similar things in texas. specifically around their county since tx is so massive and some things seem to vary. any information helps, the situation is fucked and whatever they can do to hold shit down would be great. thanks!
While riding my bike around the neighbourhood I always noticed this house that's abandoned, never seen a car in the driveway since 2019. What would be the process to squat it, do you just break a window to get inside or what's the process. I don't think I have the balls to do it but I'm curious how would one go about it.
I'm looking to squat somewhere specifically in western Ireland maybe near or in Galway. But honestly anywhere in Ireland will do so if you have any resources let me know. thank you so much.
Does anyone empty, abandonded empty houses, appartements in this area ? thanks
Hi so I contacted a realtor about a house that I found and they tried to call the owner but nobody answered, the house looks in shambles and is obviously abandoned but I have no idea what the squatter rights are in New Hampshire this is in the USA. I want to have a house so my daughter can grow up somewhere nice but I don't know how to start.
Who here has experience squatting in California. How long have you done it for??
Hello everyone,
I recently moved to Chicago and am trying to navigate the local laws on squatting.
I’ve reviewed the How To Squat in Chicago guide from The Anarchist Library, but I still have some concerns about trespassing charges. The guide outlines several squatting options in Chicago:
I’m searching for a temporary workspace (1-2 years) and need to avoid any trespassing charges or criminal records, as these could jeopardize my career prospects.
What’s the safest way to squat without risking legal issues? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Does someone has knowledge about the squatters from Iași (Roemenië)? Because i need to get in contact with them for further help .. And eventually tips from them, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
In the US. He's claiming he's teaching people about how to obtain properties yes plural the adverse possession. He has an Instagram and YouTube.
I am curious about people using different jurisdictions to be able to obtain homes, I have been looking into the whole sovereignty movement how people are dropping out of paying her taxes or paying off credit card bills claiming at least. It's somewhat logical Brandon Joe Williams for example
Why not take her home and claim for you and declaration of human rights? Anyway the whole squatting an adverse possession game seems like a bit too much paperwork for me. And at least where I am squatting is highly against the norm stream of consciousness whenever I bring it up to I guess who I am realizing are Normie's.
If interested also check out Cal Washington he claims to be using ancient law which is unknown and hidden from the masses and is claiming to do very powerful things. And the basis is that or the hypothesis rather is that our society is propped up through big words and confusing paperwork which keeps the people in their normal modus operandi. Anyway just some of the angles that I'm looking at may help you guys out there good luck
Yesterday I was driving down route 19 near Gainesville, NY & passed through a little hamlet called rock glen. I noticed at least 5 abandoned buildings, two were residential and one could have been either commercial or residential. Low population, however it’s a small town so could be some nosey townsfolk around. Still wanted to put the word out though.
hello everyone , i hope this is the right page to ask but a little bit about my situation
i moved in with a “friend” back in March 2024 , i don’t have good credit so he said i wouldn’t have to sign a lease and that the landlord would be okay with it. Fast forward to middle of June 2024 he decided he wanted to live with his girlfriend and took all his things and moved out without giving me notice. he said if i wanted to keep the apartment that i need to find a new roommate and we can just continue to pay him rent until lease is up (march 2025) I ended up finding a roommate and we were paying rent every month. well just a few weeks ago i woke up to banging on my front door and answered the door to a sheriff serving eviction papers saying the “tenant on the lease owes over 5k in rent” i consulted with him and he admitted to never paying the rent my new roommate and i were paying him every month. (pocketing our money)
i decided to get in contact with the landlord and she told me that since i am not on the lease that i am trespassing and she can come kick me out right now if she wanted to. She told me i have until August 30th to get my stuff out. (3 days) and that she already rented out the apartment to someone else. i obviously cannot move out in 3 days. i don’t plan on staying here anymore but it is impossible for me to find somewhere to go in 3 days.
i have no proof i was paying rent every month, i was giving my old roommate cash because i was getting paper checks from work.
is it illegal for the landlord to rent the place out if my old roommate hasn’t had their first court hearing yet ? the evictions papers say the landlord has terminated the lease because terms of lease was violated the eviction papers just have my old roommates name it doesn’t say “all other occupants” what are my rights? i just need some insight on what to do. any advice is appreciated. thank you
Why are there people passionately defending landlords on subs where they don't belong ? I am trying to find a safe space to talk about my recent eviction and to share my experience being laid off instead of getting called a ''shameful PoS who feels entitled to cheap housing ''
I know someone who would like to get into squatting in London and I was wondering where they should start. Specifically, I was wondering if there were any places in London where they could squat? If not, how would they be able to find a safe place to squat? And where should they get advice on squatting? Thank you!
