SpongeBob is my favorite show in the whole universe. Everything is put there for a reason, and one of a thousand reasons why I've learned this is because of the MASSIVE amount of intelligence goes into its execution. While SpongeBob has many mediums of art it addresses, from beautifully-painted backgrounds to hand-drawn frame-by-frame animation, there is a HUGE amount of literary references in it as well, dating as far back (that I've seen so far) as the 1800s! (or medieval times /mythology included) Many, many parts that out of context may seem very weird, are actually extreme literature references! What are some you know?
You don't have to read all this if you want: Just put yours in the comments, but if you're curious...
(You can look any of these up if you wish)
Some I know off the top of my head: "Squeaky Boots": Mr. Krabs' psychotic rant at the end is a direct parody of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Telltale Heart". It has the exact same dialogue, except it replaces the word "heart" with boots.
"Plankton's Old Chum": The part where Squidward talks to the young fish outside his window is an exact parody of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". The dialogue is again, exact.
King Neptune/Poseidon: In Greek and Roman mythology, Neptune and Poseidon are the same character, ruler of the oceans.
The Flying Dutchman: As I remember it: The Flying Dutchman did not originally refer to the captain himself, but of a ship in ancient times that was said to never reach the port. The show decided to call the ghost of said ship himself, the Flying Dutchman, hence an eternally sailing ship.
Davy Jones's Locker: Is a metaphor used as far back as apparently the mid 1700s', which described the abyss of the sea, where supposedly dead or drowned sailors come to rest.
SpongeBob has a lot of 50s' science fiction parodies, such as "Planet of the Jellyfish" being a play of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" "Squidtastic Voyage" being a parody of Fantastic Voyage, "It Came From Goo Lagoon" being a parody of, "It Came From Outer Space"; "The Krabby Patty That Ate Bikini Bottom" is a parody of "The Blob" 1958 starring the acclaimed Steve McQueen. I doubted this at one time, but: If you watch this movie or clips of it, it becomes very apparent that even the direction of the episode is mimicking that movie (e.g. the camera cuts right as the monster is swallowing its victim)
Also, horror: "I Was a Teenage Gary from" "I Was a Teenage Werewolf". Nosferatu is actually a character, and image, adapted from the 1922 silent German film, "Nosferatu". The joke at the end of "Squidferatu", refers to "Phantom of the Opera", from originally 1925.
Elements from the series that are locations in Bikini Bottom are very often based off of real places, such as the "Mauna Loa" and the "Bikini Bottom/Dutchman's Triangle" (real place is the Bermuda Triangle)
Lots of 50s' parodies exist, from the leather jackets to the motorcycles, such as "Born to Be Wild", "Sharks vs. Pods", "Krusty Konnecaires" (still can't spell that) and "Whatever Happened to SpongeBob?" imitating the Jimmy Dean/Marlon Brando era.
Almost everything in Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy episodes parody old superhero cartoons and their comic book origins, perhaps the biggest collection all in one place of this is in "Mermaidman Begins".
In the episode: Sleepy Time, Gary quotes a real poem from Emily Dickinson. For ages, dreams have been thought of as windows to another realm. (picks up a book and reads from it) "Let me not mar that perfect dream by an auroral stain, but so adjust my daily night that it may come again." Let me not mar that perfect Dream by Emily Dickinson - Meaning, Themes, Analysis and Literary Devices - American Poems
Rest assured, this is not even CLOSE to how many exist in this show. Even everyday dialogue the characters use, use intelligent language and synonyms for simple words, giving it that literary flair.
Watching SpongeBob is literally a history lesson, and it's just insane this was once called the most uneducational child eye candy of its time. It's not just another show from Cartoon Network or Disney Channel, the many that people try to compare it to. It has always remained different.
Anyway, what ones do you find?π
I recently finished the game and got all collectibles, however I still don't have the achievements for collecting 75 golden spatulas, 100 golden spatulas and 80 socks. Does anyone know how can I get the achievements (I'm playing through Xbox app on a computer and I found all socks and spatulas)
Do you guys hate post movie spongebob this much?
sorry if he doesnβt look right but i tried my best
Money Bob.
Does anybody else remember an episode of SpongeBob where Mr Krabs sent SpongeBob, Patrick, and squidward, to deliver a Krabby patty and half way through the episode, Squidward gets lost and SpongeBob and Patrick don't notice until like 3 minutes later, eventually SpongeBob and Patrick find the place but the person who answers the door is plankton, then Patrick SWALLOWS PLANKTON WHOLE and then the last scene is Squidward still lost.
I see it listed in YouTube videos as one of the worst. I see people hating on it on Twitter. Itβs constantly just disregarded and I just donβt agree that the house party is one of the worst episodes of the early seasons. Iβm just gagged every time. I love that episode. Nostalgia aside itβs just so fun to see everyone doing such a human activity. House parties are classic. I quote this episode all the time. I just donβt get itβ¦ is anyone else a house party defender?
Hi!! used to watch spongebob when i was younger, i was playing a game amongst friends when phobias came up and one of mine came from this episode of spongebob that i vaguely remember Squidward being kidnapped or taken by these weird squid like people who were like touchy with him? if i remember correctly there was like cement poured on him??
anyways im really hoping this was an actual episode and not some weird dream i freaked my friends out with. Thanks
Iβve been re-watching SpongeBob and noticedβ¦ Patrick is low key a bad friend to SpongeBob! Has anyone else noticed this?
