Someone please explain what a time loss is because I was talking with a friend and he said that time losses are good but when I watch speed runs they say time loss when they spend too much time on something. Please help
I'm currently messing around with tetris (I know bit it's the only thing I'm good enough at to even think about having a good run) but I can't find a way to use live split one with it. I am on Chromebook, also not great but it's all I have. I'd either have to start the timer, switch tabs, start the game, and wait 3 seconds, which altogether would be 4 seconds. The score for it is 10 seconds. Or, I could have them in separate windows, and have to switch windows and do that process. What should I do
No matter how much i experiment with the options and google explanations I just can’t figure it out so im just gonna ask if it’s possible.
I want 4 columns for my splits
PB, which displays my best time for that split and updates if i get a new one
+/-, which displays the time difference between my PB and the current split
Split, which displays the time of just the split
Time, displays the total time of the run.
Time and split are pretty easy and work, but the PB column refuses to cooperate.
Also is there a way to make the Time and Split column reset to 0 every run so they are blank, i don’t like that it keeps the times from the last run until i write over it with a new run.
only android games, i dont really care that much what game as long as there is a guide for it
hi yall. this is the first time i've actually had a bunch of time off work in the past like seven years, and so i figured what better to do with my day than spend it rewriting and cleaning up subreddit stuff. the sidebar itself has been rewritten to be just generally more clear and remove dead links, a new info page was added with a list of commonly used speedrunning terms, and i rewrote parts of the community FAQ to be more updated with 2024 info. feel free to take a look below and let me know if you've got any feedback on it or things you'd add

(the FAQ page is the one that gets linked to by the automod when people write their post in such a way that might indicate that they're a new runner, so it's more intro-level for that reason)
There was a video a while ago in the style of summoningsalt’s (or it could have been one of his) where the host revealed halfway through that one of the top runners who had disappeared online was actually them.
i know about the obvious ones like the sm64 upwarp but what other ones have people experienced (preferably ones that would save time if solved)
Anything cool happening in the speedrunning world this weekend? Into a new game or streamer and can't wait to watch more runs? Just find an awesome speedrunning YouTube channel? This is the place to tell everyone about it! Feel free to link streamers, YouTube channels, or any other related information here, just be mindful of the subreddit and reddit's overall self-promotion policies.
My problem is that I can't play a full Dark Souls speedrun because I don't have time, so when I go to save my splits and stopwatch time, only the split times are saved, but the stopwatch goes back to zero. When I log back in, I do it from save split as, and whenever I finish I pause it and the numbers go from green to gray.

Not necessarily who did, more so how did the first run go for you? Were you trying new exploits on the fly? Or did you slowly refine your gameplay overtime until learning new exploits would be a clear benefit? I have the want to start streaming speedruns myself, but I’d only be a beginner. With games like Persona 5 there would be a ton of mistakes taking up time. I’m questioning if it would even be a good idea. Especially when most of the best of the best stream regularly.
I know for PC, one can use Nohboard for K&M, or Gamepadviewer for most controllers. What cable brands do I need for using, say N64 or NES controllers, for PC. I use NintendoSpy for those controllers on PC?
What cables would I use to record controllers for consoles? Such as Xbox, PS4, N64, NES
I've been into math rock for a while, and I keep having this recurring idea of making a song to perfectly complete games with shorter run times like the mario series any% runs or runs for some of the older games in that similar vein. Forgive my layman's knowledge, but what does the more experienced community think of this?
EDIT: I am simply posing an idea. I haven't kept up with any sort of runs in a long time, but I know that some Mario Odyssey runs use some song something or other to help assist in a trick or two. I was just thinking of expounding upon that idea. By no means does it mean that there will never be human error in an input-heavy trick. I'm a musician, so laying out the inputs as theoretical notes is just how it works in my head.
Hi there fellow runners, I am looking for someone to help me who has expierence with wiis and how the loading times are for gamecube speedruns. I am looking at speedrunning the classic resident evil games on gamecube.
I heard the wii is the faster way to speedrun gamecube runs but I am not sure what model wii's are the best to run on. I am looking for a NTSC - J console to be exact. I read that the red ones are faster but some say the family edition one is correct?
So just need some advice on whats best here.
Many thanks
An idea came to mind when I was thinking about the way that runners might be able to improve their focus with medications or drugs that reduce stress/anxiety that often comes from runners getting on good pace (note the heart rate monitors). Hypothetically if a runner were to get WR using a drug to reduce stress and improve performance due to that could it be disqualified? Or is it not cheating since there were no modifications to the game? Has this ever happened or been tested before?
