    help with student license

hello I have been tinkering with solidworks off and on for a few years now. I once got my student license through the EAA for 50 bucks a year and then they dropped that program and then I got it through Titans of CNC student program. my license expires in a few days and the link I've used for titans of cnc looks to be a dead end.

is there a easy program out there to join to get a solidworks student license to get the downloadable version similar to how titans or eaa used. I don't know much about the solidworks for makers program but it being web based scares me as it looks like a new interface I'm not accustomed to. any and all help and advice is surely appreciated.

    Looking for some help

I just started using SolidWorks (or any parametric modeling software) and I have some questions.

I need some help, but I am more wanting just a direction where to go to learn the things that I am trying to do vs. someone just telling me what to do.

    1. How do you add a texture to a curved surface? Let's say I have a bowl, but inside that bowl, I want pyramids inside the bowl. I don't know what to look for to get more information on this.

    2. And can I build a part off of another part? Basically, can I make a part, save it, then build another part off of that part then save that one as a separate part? I know you can do assemblies, but isn't that just putting already made parts together?

Anyone running Solidworks on another drive?

I have three M.2 drives within my system. C, which is boot, D and E for everything else.

I normally install Solidworks on the C drive, but I've been wondering if it would be smarter to install it on one of the other M.2's. I can't imagine any issues happening, but I haven't done it before so I figured I'd ask before considering migrating to another drive.

    Thanks in advance!

    PC help for Solidworks

I am currently attempting a PC build to run solidworks for work. I have started out on an HP laptop which frequently crashes and is incredibly slow. From multiple people I have heard to stay away from pre built PC's as they aren't the best bang for your buck. I have gotten minimal help on the actual component side of constructing a PC. My goal was to stay within $2000-$2500 for a build which leaves me a solid base to upgrade in the future. I mostly make sheet metal parts but have began expanding into more complex parts/ assemblies creating parts for race cars. Looking for some insight on the components I currently selected and if their is anything else I need to purchase. Like i said, I know absolutely nothing about PC components or how to build one. The CPU/motherboard/ram is a bundle for $550 on microcenter which I was told would be a solid base. Along with the RTX A4000 being a great graphics card i can use for a long time. Let me know what i should change, add, or anything else I need. Much appreciated!

    Understanding Licensing costs

    Hi All,

A bit of background, I am working with a startup in Australia as there go to for IT and software related things.

They would like to get solid works for around 5 staff members, can anyone summarise how the licensing works? Is there a way to avoid a yearly subscription? Is there a way to lower the costs? Coming in at 4K+ (AUD) a year per user seems steep especially for a small startup

This is the first I have had to deal with acquiring CAD software so any tips would be appreciated

No font settings for Sketch Text, Solidworks Student

    https://preview.redd.it/zjdm3mef3oge1.png?width=2510&format=png&auto=webp&s=b4b6358dff3714d02dbb22787c93d0b6b7aa7a97

    Hello!

I have used a Solidworks student license through my university for the last three years with no issues. Recently I tried to put some text onto a part and used the sketch text tool. For some reason, there are no font settings. Usually on the left gray bar, there is a whole menu that is grayed out until I uncheck "use document properties." Does anyone know why this disappeared and/or how I can get it back? Is it a problem because I use the student license? I am just confused because I have always had this menu available and why would it disappear all of a sudden?

I attached an image of my software with the missing font properties menu.

Any help is appreciated, thank you!

    Question about ScanTo3D

So my significant other gave me a Creality Scan Ferret for Christmas. At first, I was frustrated trying to scan anything, but I am starting to get the hang of it. The only problem is that I'm not sure how to process the .ply files. (STL and OBJ are optional as well, but SW uses all three. Is one better than the other two?)

    https://preview.redd.it/5mtz7um9rnge1.jpg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5cb5e4e8772ee487d9e2ff4a8ad8fedd900a0e08

I've been scanning the rear hatch of my car, as I have something in mind that I want to make, that I want to fit perfectly throughout the back. I removed the carpet a long time ago, so I have been trying to scan the aluminum battery cover (the wavy section), and as you can see, the bottom lip of it doesn't scan well. I switched from "Dimensional" to "Textured", which helped remove the "flat surface errors". Everything else came out pretty well

    https://preview.redd.it/94t93881onge1.jpg?width=1705&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d5cd12b28fb64e402ecf6a8a9d3369c4cfdbf1d

Initially, when I tried to work with this in ScanTo3D, everything except "Curve Wizard" was greyed out. So, I did some digging, and realized I have to open the file as a ScanTo3D .ply file, even though I opened it regularly as a .ply file. Apparently, the two are not the same thing, as it gave me more options now.

So I went through the Mesh Prep Wizard, followed the instructions, and each step, I've selected highest resolution. However, the best I can come up with is this:

    https://preview.redd.it/4u14wgnmsnge1.jpg?width=1817&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c292fa6b45a0843e68d0280b5a43c07b788d9e08

Is there a better way of making it come out as a more accurate surface? And, whenever I try to thicken, it's more than my PC can handle, apparently, as I let it run for over 30 minutes, with no luck. No progress bar to see where it was...

So, what's the best way of pulling a solid model out of this mesh model, without losing details?

How to limit framerate in solidworks

Hello, i am using Soldiworks on a good pc but my gpu fans keep getting louder when using solidworks. The underlying problem is that i am getting over 1000 fps while moving the object, is there anyway to limit the fps via solidworks? Using the software of my gpu to limit the fps is not doing anything. thanks in advance

Linking dimensions to external TXT file?

I purchased SolidWorks for my personal computer last night. I purchased the $50 per year version. My receipt shows it was the professional version. At my day job, I can connect dimensions in my drawings to an external txt file. When I went to do that with some models last night, the option to do this was not there. Is this something I need to enable in settings, or do I have a lesser version of SolidWorks?

Cant create symmetric relation in sketch?

    https://preview.redd.it/fzzon6liwkge1.png?width=1913&format=png&auto=webp&s=e312496a4b69844e91f70d9d2e0f92c6f038606d

Maybe I am missing something blatantly obvious but why can I not add a symmetric relation to these three lines so that the center line is equally spaced between the two construction lines? I was able to easily add a symmetric relation between the two side walls and the small center construction line to center my circles, so why can I center it between my two construction lines? Changing the line type from construction does not help.

    DDR4 40GB

    RTX 3060 6GB

Can I get something with that?

A way to offset or move faces that can be changed with a global variable

I want to offset faces for 3D printing and I want that offset to be able to be changed with a global variable.

I have tried the Move Face command. I attempted to assign the global variable by double-clicking the feature in the FeatureManager design tree, then double clicking the dimension that appears on the model. Entering the global variable in that window merely copies the value of the global variable to the dimension rather than linking the global variable to the dimension. When I change the global variable, the offset does not get changed to the new value.

I have tried using a sketch offset with an extruded cut. However, the same thing happens. The value of the global variable gets copied to the dimension and does not change when the global variable is changed.

Is there no way to achieve this?

    Thank you.

Edit : That's it! I was missing the = sign.

    Staying organised

    Beginner query

Anyone got systems or recommendations for naming files, parts, subassemblies, assemblies, folders etc. to help staying organised throughout the design process.

Ive been using solidworks a few months now and my desktop is a hot mess. Also older assemblies dont work because after i loaded then parts in, i since reused them in different assemblies and renamed them.

PDM - Copy Tree Exclude Folders

Hello all, My company uses PDM and we do a lot of copy trees to create customer specific products based on existing 'family' parts/assemblies. The problem I am trying to solve is only making copies of what we need for each iteration. I have explained to the users that they can deselect the checkbox for each part/assembly in the copy tree that they don't want copied, but there are varying levels of experience, etc. and this doesn't always happen successfully.

I know about the option to put files in a folder and excluding that folder/subfolders in PDM Admin options and that seems like the only strategy to prevent files from being grabbed in copy tree.

My question is is anyone currently using this option or is there another strategy I am unaware of to achieve the same purpose? It would be amazing if you could create a state in PDM that could exclude files rather than it being based on path.

Also, if excluding folders is the only way, how would that work in practice? I'm thinking it would be best to create a central directory with a subfolder for each product type and then Move Tree the common files into those subfolders.

Thanks in advance. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

3d sketch containing helix. Why can’t I fillet where the helix meets a joining line?

I’m creating a custom torsion spring. I have used the helix/ spiral feature to create a helix. I’ve then converted entities in a 3d sketch so that the helix exists in the 3d sketch. I then have lines coming off each end of the helix.

I cannot have sharp corners where the helix meets the adjoining lines. So I wanted to fillet these lines within the 3d sketch. For some reason it won’t let me select the point where the line meets the helix at either end when I’m trying to fillet.

    Any ideas?
