40 (Years) Not Out - November 21st. Milk Cup and FA Cup round-up

Several shocks were seen between yesterday and today in both cup competitions. An evening to remember at Blundell Park and in some other grounds.

In the Milk Cup, as mentioned before, it was a memorable evening for Grimsby Town. Paul Wilkinson's goal was enough for the Mariners to snatch a shock win over League leaders Everton at Goodison Park and book a place into the last 8 of the competition. A marvellous night for the side who will defend the pride of the Second Division in the latter stages. It was the only bright spot in an evening in which the rest of the division's representatives all crashed: Oxford went down at Ipswich thanks to Romeo Zondervan's goal, Notts County were beaten 3-0 at Norwich, while Manchester City suffered the wrath and the goalscoring prowess of Kerry Dixon, who scored three past Alex Williams in a 4-1 win, despite a shocker from the penalty spot by Pat Nevin.

In the rest of the ties, another hat-trick was seen at Hillsborough: Andy Blair's penalty hat-trick helped Sheffield Wednesday beat Luton 4-2, while 4 were also scored by Watford in their home win over West Brom. In the remaining ties, there will be replays between Southampton and QPR (1-1 at The Dell), and Sunderland and Tottenham (goalless at Roker Park). We have also the result of the fifth round draw - Grimsby playing at home against Norwich in a golden chance to enhance their Cup status.

In the FA Cup, there were three further giant-killings to add up to the ones by Altrincham and Northwich Victoria. First, Telford United beat Third Division Lincoln 2-1, in a match here Colin Williams scored both goals for the non-Leaguers. In the seaside, Bognor Regis also beat Division Three opposition; 3-1 over Swansea in a match where Paul Pullen scored a brace. The last of the shocks was just 10 miles from London, as Enfield beat Exeter in a match where Nicky Ironton and Paul Taylor scored the goals in a 3-0 win. Sadly, Kettering came close to causing another scalp, only to see their 2-0 lead overhauled at Bournemouth. Extra time also saw Nuneaton Borough fall at Scunthorpe, whereas Valley Sports Rugby fought hard and lost to a single Northampton goal. Lastly, Bangor simply were overplayed at Prenton Park, as Tranmere hit them with 7 - Colin Clarke scoring a hat-trick. In the rest of the matches, Aldershot scored 4 past Newport, and Perry Groves' extra time goal sent Colchester into the second round at the expense of Southend.

Lastly, in Division Two, Carlisle beat Fulham 3-0 at Brunton Park.

On the telly...
