A place to post and discuss any new or existing technologies that go towards building Smart/Intelligent Buildings.

Bring anything related to the table: CCTV, Access Control, Intelligent Infrastructure, Lighting, Environmental Control, and Asset Management. More recently deploying Hot Desk and Meeting Room booking systems.

There are many aspects that go into creating a Smart Building and we can discuss them here.

Your feedback on our smart building platform is welcome!

Hi smart building enthusiasts!

we've run our smart building platform oqdo.bos to help people who own and/or operate buildings to run them more effectivly and energy efficient by giving them accesibility, insights and control with some brain inside.

I'm starting a company to predict the energy use of buildings

Predicting the energy consumption of buildings currently in operation is usually treated as a project with a costly survey and simulation engine, or as a complicated excel sheet based on prior data.

I think there is a middle ground between the two where the predictions can be delivered in real time, but still adapt to changing internal (new windows, occupants, schedules) and external (weather, market price) forces.

I'd love to hear from you.

What is the difference between smart buildings and intelligent buildings?

Smart Building:

A Smart Building is an apartment unit with several smart appliances (i.e. door lock, light switch, thermostat, and other building automation devices). These devices are typically managed through a mobile app from a Resident’s smartphone. The main benefits of a Smart Building are comfort, money savings, energy efficiency, etc.

Intelligent Building:

An Intelligent Building links all the Smart Apartment divisions to a building network, giving greater comfort, energy efficiency, and protection to Property Managers and Residents. The Residents have the benefits of a Smart Apartment both within their own unit and within the rest of the building.

Smart Buildings? Intelligent Buildings? Digital Buildings? What do you call it and why?

I realize it's semantics, but sometimes it seems like there's confusion on what the best "term" is for the broader public who don't understand the nuances of the industry. Thoughts?

How Built Spaces can Henefit From Digital Engineering

Replacing manual with digital processes is one way that engineers can ensure that the world's built spaces use energy as efficiently as possible, writes Carl Coken, vice president of Atrius Engineering, Acuity Brands. This can involve the placement of sensors throughout a project for optimal energy usage, paired with digital twins to provide a wide array of data for operators.

Is consultancy service changing to meet smart building needs?

Been doing a bit of reading recently on growth of smart building projects and noticed that consultancy firms like ARUP now have. smart building consultancy services. How is the the consultancy service changing to meet the needs of smart building projects? Is there a difference now between an M&E consultant as opposed to a "smart" consultant or are they the same just different names? Is there different training or roles?

Buildings IOT Launches Ontology Alignment Project to Streamline the Normalization of Building Data

Today, Buildings IOT released the OAP (Ontology Alignment Project). This open-source ontology includes a data model for a growing list of systems within the built environment and is foundational for improving building management and operations.

The OAP defines both the name and the points associated with building entities as diverse as rooftop units, electric meters, and booster pumps to make their data more readable by machines.
