Collecting examples of when Siri — the "personal assistant" by Apple — fails to work as intended (which is so frequently, we created a subreddit for it). The results are both hilarious and depressing.

Siri won’t respond

I speak to Siri but she won’t respond.. I don’t want to reset her every 2 days. Am I the only one having a problem? (iPhone 16 Pro)

NSFW fail

I’m trying to add cumin seed to my shopping list. Siri keeps adding human seed. I tried cue-min and coo-min.

“ hey Siri” problems fixed

I updated my phone, Siri stopped listening to me saying “hey siri” or would sometimes listen but not respond. Pissed me right off. I restarted and had “ listen for hey Siri on”. Still didn’t work. After 2 months, I realized that having “ press side button for siri” on as well does not just make that option available but stops it from listening for “ hey Siri”. Didn’t do that before the update but I’d rather have the hands free version work than the side button. Hope this helps someone. Cheers.

Siri still can't tell time. 19:00 Central is not 01:00 here. I thought maybe Siri assumed Central European Time but even that's not correct. Tried asking "7 PM US Central is what time here?" and just got web results. Siri, it's not that hard! I could do this when I was two years old.

Siri misheard me again

I was watching Minecraft video and I said “Is there a link so I can play it? (The Map)” but while I was saying that Siri triggered and I guess she misheard me say “Yoda Play” because after that Yoda by Weird Al started playing, I mean I’m not complaining, it’s a good song, just find it funny.

Siri keeps failing omg lmao

so! my siri is confusing!

I said "hey siri- call Dad" and my siri said "okay, calling Irene home." like whatttt!? crazy thing with that is I don't know or have the number of anyone named irene so idk who siri called. (I hung up immediately)

also I asked siri for no reason just boredom (that is a reason) "hey siri- am I a failure?" and siri literally went and said "you'll need to unlock your iPhone first." whattttt!? why what how who when where why aghhhhhhhhhhh.

also multiple times I ask siri something and then siri replies with "if you think it could be serious ask me to contact emergency services or someone you trust." and I literally said "hey siri- what is the normal range of cost of houses in CA" like wtf???? then my brother uses my phone sometimes and asked something random it was related to math and it did the same thing. i am so confused

At this point, SIRI alone is forcing me to consider leaving the Apple ecosystem

I'm so at the end of my rope with Apple’s privacy-over-convenience approach and using it as a defense against every shitty experience we have. Jesus, I mean chatgpt is the new "here's what I found on the web." And Tim's claim that not passing information to chatgpt is a feature actually nuders generative AI from all of it's personalization potential on a device. Great, now the AI will never remember anything that we've discussed.. just as all the other AI platforms are moving in the opposite direction. I guess Tim is just that out of touch with what's driving the excitement forward. Anybody else just not excited about that last 3 generations of apple devices?

I’ve been a long-time iPhone user, but I’m really frustrated with Apple’s relentless focus on privacy at the expense of convenience. I get it, privacy is important. But more often than not there are times when I want to prioritize convenience, and Apple just doesn’t give me the option.

I feel like apple is pushing the privacy agenda that nobody asked for.

With Siri I can send regular texts without unlocking my phone, but I can’t do the same with WhatsApp despite being completely willing to hand over my privacy for it. As usual, apple is taking the choice away from us. That was fine when it was all about design choices, but when it comes to things as fundamental as my own privacy choices, it's infuriating! It feels like Apple is so focused on the decision that we all need protecting that they’ve forgotten that many people like myself would happily hand over their left leg to get the promise of generative AI locally and today.

I know some people love Apple’s approach, but not everyone has the same privacy concerns. I’d love it if Apple would give us more control to choose convenience over privacy when we want. I just don't see that Apple will veer from this path until Tim retires.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Siri and Apple Intelligence

So I upgraded to the new 18.1 version to get Apple Intelligence into Siri.

I asked her to show me videos I took in October 2020 and she just opens up YouTube and puts in search query October 2020...

Still can’t do a basic conversion

I live in Canada and embrace metric, however kilopascals is something that still isn’t widely used, with pounds per square inch still kind of being the gold standard for things like tire pressure. PSI is one of the only non-metric units that still makes sense to me.

So when my car started complaining about a low tire today, I asked Siri For the conversion to see exactly how low it is since 160kpa means nothing to me.

For years now, this is what you get when asking for kilopascals to pounds per square inch. Siri still cannot natively make a simple conversion like this.

How do I stop Siri asking me to unlock my iPhone for basic stuff?

If anyone knows a way to get around this, I'd be so happy to hear it. I know this isn't specific to the latest iOS beta, but thought I'd ask here.

I'm so done with apple using privacy to excuse the shitshow that is siri. I'm quite sure Steve Jobs would roll over in his grave if he knew these basic assistant features were major issues a decade+ after launch.

  • Can't ask for something on my calendar despite it being displayed prominently on my lock screen
  • Can't ask what the message I just received says despite it being displayed prominently on my lock screen
  • Can't basically do anything without unlocking my iphone

If you've seen Steve Jobs dramatization of the future of Siri from the 1980s, you'd know he'd be rolling in his grave right now because of what internal Apple bureaucracy has made of his baby.

Steve Jobs would roll over in his grave -rant

I'm so done with apple using privacy to excuse the lack of effort they've put into siri.

  • Can't ask for something on my calendar despite it being displayed prominently on my lock screen

  • Can't ask what the message I just received says despite it being displayed prominently on my lock screen

  • Can't basically do anything without unlocking my iphone

Apple leaning on "privacy" to defend their biggest ongoing fuckups really pisses me off. If you've seen Steve Jobs dramatization of the future of Siri from the 1980s, you'd know he'd be rolling in his grave right now because of what internal Apple bureaucracy has made of siri.

Wrong country, Siri.

I was in Vancouver, British Columbia and asked for the weather in the nearby city of Victoria. It gave me the weather for some city by the same name in Mexico that no one has ever heard of.

Later I asked for the weather in Banff and was given the weather in Banff, Scotland.

Sigh…

Siri: How many days in this month?

Me: How many days in September?

Siri: It was 28 days ago.

Me: How many days in December?

Siri: It's 63 days until then.

Me: How many days in January?

Siri: It's 94 days until then.

[Sound of sledgehammer pummelling device.]

What year is it?

I asked Siri to play "70s rock" and a few tracks in it started playing Africa by Toto. Just to be sure I wasn't losing my mind, I asked when it was released, and got this gem:
