Collecting examples of when Siri — the "personal assistant" by Apple — fails to work as intended (which is so frequently, we created a subreddit for it). The results are both hilarious and depressing.

I'm so at the end of my rope with Apple’s privacy-over-convenience approach and using it as a defense against every shitty experience we have. Jesus, I mean chatgpt is the new "here's what I found on the web." And Tim's claim that not passing information to chatgpt is a feature actually nuders generative AI from all of it's personalization potential on a device. Great, now the AI will never remember anything that we've discussed.. just as all the other AI platforms are moving in the opposite direction. I guess Tim is just that out of touch with what's driving the excitement forward. Anybody else just not excited about that last 3 generations of apple devices?
I’ve been a long-time iPhone user, but I’m really frustrated with Apple’s relentless focus on privacy at the expense of convenience. I get it, privacy is important. But more often than not there are times when I want to prioritize convenience, and Apple just doesn’t give me the option.
I feel like apple is pushing the privacy agenda that nobody asked for.
With Siri I can send regular texts without unlocking my phone, but I can’t do the same with WhatsApp despite being completely willing to hand over my privacy for it. As usual, apple is taking the choice away from us. That was fine when it was all about design choices, but when it comes to things as fundamental as my own privacy choices, it's infuriating! It feels like Apple is so focused on the decision that we all need protecting that they’ve forgotten that many people like myself would happily hand over their left leg to get the promise of generative AI locally and today.
I know some people love Apple’s approach, but not everyone has the same privacy concerns. I’d love it if Apple would give us more control to choose convenience over privacy when we want. I just don't see that Apple will veer from this path until Tim retires.
Anyone else feel the same way?
So I upgraded to the new 18.1 version to get Apple Intelligence into Siri.
I asked her to show me videos I took in October 2020 and she just opens up YouTube and puts in search query October 2020...
I live in Canada and embrace metric, however kilopascals is something that still isn’t widely used, with pounds per square inch still kind of being the gold standard for things like tire pressure. PSI is one of the only non-metric units that still makes sense to me.
So when my car started complaining about a low tire today, I asked Siri For the conversion to see exactly how low it is since 160kpa means nothing to me.
For years now, this is what you get when asking for kilopascals to pounds per square inch. Siri still cannot natively make a simple conversion like this.

If anyone knows a way to get around this, I'd be so happy to hear it. I know this isn't specific to the latest iOS beta, but thought I'd ask here.
I'm so done with apple using privacy to excuse the shitshow that is siri. I'm quite sure Steve Jobs would roll over in his grave if he knew these basic assistant features were major issues a decade+ after launch.
If you've seen Steve Jobs dramatization of the future of Siri from the 1980s, you'd know he'd be rolling in his grave right now because of what internal Apple bureaucracy has made of his baby.

Can't ask for something on my calendar despite it being displayed prominently on my lock screen
Can't ask what the message I just received says despite it being displayed prominently on my lock screen
Can't basically do anything without unlocking my iphone
Apple leaning on "privacy" to defend their biggest ongoing fuckups really pisses me off. If you've seen Steve Jobs dramatization of the future of Siri from the 1980s, you'd know he'd be rolling in his grave right now because of what internal Apple bureaucracy has made of siri.
I was in Vancouver, British Columbia and asked for the weather in the nearby city of Victoria. It gave me the weather for some city by the same name in Mexico that no one has ever heard of.
Later I asked for the weather in Banff and was given the weather in Banff, Scotland.
Sigh…
Me: How many days in September?
Siri: It was 28 days ago.
Me: How many days in December?
Siri: It's 63 days until then.
Me: How many days in January?
Siri: It's 94 days until then.
[Sound of sledgehammer pummelling device.]
I asked Siri to play "70s rock" and a few tracks in it started playing Africa by Toto. Just to be sure I wasn't losing my mind, I asked when it was released, and got this gem:
Question types I wish she could handle better so I didn’t have to go to a frickin web search, “Define x obscure word.” Things such as forsooth she absolutely cannot get right. I asked her to define forsooth and she gave me the definition for pursue 6 fuckin times in a row! Gods help you if you want her to explain an uncommon phrase like “A well turned calf.”
Apple if you must insist on shoving Siri into my gods damned phone, make it useful to people who aren’t the 0.05% of humans that are absolute fucking dullards! I don’t need to know what pursue means! A 10 year old knows that! Fuck! It’s been this way for years! Why?! I can never get her to do anything useful short of set a timer or an alarm, and some of the time the dumb bitch gets that wrong too. To whoever made Siri and decided that the average populace must be as stupid as Siri seems to believe we are, the dumbest people in the world believe themselves to be the smartest person around, and technology, technology is only as good as the imbecile that made it!
I see no Siri improvements in at least the past two years and my boyfriend is tired of us reprimanding siri hoping someone at Apple is listening. Why are we paying $700+ for a phone that can’t perform basic functions it provided three phones ago?
I am so frustrated with the last 6mos-1yr of asking Siri to call a business and Siri says she can't locate the business in my contacts. Siri no longer EVER looks anything up online any more! ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS goes straight to my contacts unless I'm asking for directions. If I’m in my car and ask to search online she says she can’t because I’m in my car. So I have to manually search online while I drive if I want to make phone calls. l've had iPhones for years. Apple changed its search feature.
Please, tell me I'm wrong, but there seems to be no way of performing most functions one might expect to want to perform hands-free using siri without first unlocking your iphone. I can't for example, find out what my next meeting is without unlocking first. What's the point? I find this to be true for most things I'd like to perform. Apple offers no workaround for this. It's driving me mad. And the fact that it seems the new Siri will operate in exactly the same manner. Tell me I'm wrong and I'm missing something here.
Got Apple Music free trial. Siri telling me it ain’t an option to listen music to.
