Single speed cycling: pavement, XC, mtb & more!
A mellow environment to show off your SS ride, ask a few questions or to discuss everything single speed related.

I've been riding different single speeds for 8 years. Between moving, selling, and bikes getting stolen I've ridden 6-8 different ones since.
Currently I'm riding a $240 Harper Retrospec and I hate it. The gear ratio is too high for New York City stop and start (and bridges), the steel frame is stiff, and the wheels shoot rainwater into my shoes.
Looking to make a switch. But to where? It's somewhat tedious trawling craigslist/marketplace/offerup daily filtering out ones that don't make sense.

P.S. the following is an uncomprehensive list of bikes I've assembled that do not have holes for mounting a back rack:
Took my classic Schwinn SS conversion out for a ride today after throwing on some new 35c tires! Rides so good, absolutely love this bike
I sold my light weight 11 speed road bike last year. I miss it.
I have been thinking about changing my town bike SS for something I can use as a road bike and take on club rides or sportives or even some local crit racing.
My current SS is a 2009 Singlecross - it's very heavy, a cyclocross frame, and actually one size too big for me. So the idea of upgrading has been on my mind for a while.
HOWEVER - there's not a whole lot of single speed options to me resemble typical road bikes. Seems most are track, CX or steel city bikes.
Ideally I was hoping to find something like the rim brake genesis flyer (which was a single speed version of their flagship road bike). But maybe a bit lighter (10kg for a single speed seems a lot given my 11sp road bike was 6.8kg). But keen to see if anyone knows of other frames out there.
*Looking for rim brakes as I have some really lovely custom wheels with a coaster Ive had for 8 years and want to keep using
Some pics of my Steamroller on the C&O canal trail and on my weekend bagel run:-)
Was running 650B x 47mm WTB Byways. The front was fine but the rear was rubbing. I switched to 650B x 47mm Hutchison Touaregs. I thought they would be a better fit on the rear but they continued to rub. The 47mm look nice but they're just a bit to wide. the paint was scraped off to the bare metal on the left side of the frame. Going to put 650B x 42mm Soma Cazedero on the rear. Gearing is 42(?) x 17.
Blue SDG allure Dakine seat. Parked on an abandoned field with no tresspass signs 😂 oops
Here is my dilemma.
I own a 2010 Mondraker Foxy and while I'm trying to sell it, no one in the New York City is really interested in buying a mtb.
I don't plan on doing any trail anymore and I'm ready to build my own singlespeed to commute in the city.
But I'm wondering if it is worth trying to reuse the 26" wheelsets, handlebar, seat post, saddle, BB, disk brakes and crankset while buying a new frame (new or old), single speed conversion kit and chainring.
Any thoughts?
Oh and if you think about a good frame with disk brake mount, do not hesitate.
hi, im new to bikes and im looking for something comfy and practical to ride every day for work and errands, basically something similar to a dutch or japanese bike as my city has everything at a distance that's a little awkward for walking and way too short to justify a car.
it rains a lot here and during the winter the streets get salted, so something that can handle the elements every day without worry would be amazing, im thinking if possible a single speed plus a chain cover would be perfect, since it's overall very flat here, but i'm having a hard time finding upright single speeds. perhaps fitting another bike with different handlebars/stems would help?
i've also considered bikes with an igh and belt, but a single speed seems like potentially less to faff with. my budget is under $800, does anyone have reccomendations?

I just got this State Bike 4130. Really enjoying it so far. I’m curious of this brand’s reputation. Also, what are the perks of freewheel and fixed? I haven’t gone fixed for more than 10 minutes yet.
First ride on my Langster after getting hit by a car last month 😓. A few new parts and it feels so good!
