Is it best interpretation for these words?: Sigurno - definitely Stvarno - indeed Naravno - of course

Da li je rec "obadvoje" ranije smatrana za gresku? Trenutno na online recnicima pise da je u redu ali ja mislim da se secam da sam ranije cuo da se smatra da je obadvoje suvisno jer "oba" vec nagovestava da se radi o dvoje necega, pa dodati "dvoje" samo nagovestava dva objekta dvaput. Da li je "obadvoje" oduvek ispravno ili je postojalo vreme kad nije bilo? (Mislim na relativno nedavno vreme, ne nesto kao pre Vukovih reformi)

While I currently learn Serbian, I don't know much phrases.

"Jesi me kresno".

Google translated it as "You're fucking me".

Često koristim Google Docs da pišem beleske, da vežbam moje pisanje na srpskom, ili za komunikaciju sa učiteljem. Problem je kada pišem ćirilicu, jer kada uključujem kurziv, ne izgleda kao srpski kurziv nego kao ruski (kao što znate, slova t-p-g... imaju različite oblike). Mogu da čitam ruske oblike, ali je meni malo teže i treba mi malo duže da pročitam šta je napisano.

Na MS Word-u nema problema, postavljam srpski kao jezik dokumenta i slova izgledaju srpskim oblicima. To se ne dešava na Google Docs-u.

Da li znate da li ima neki način da Google Docs prikazuje srpske oblike a ne ruske?

This is probably a stupid question but I don’t know how Serbian handles the gender of borrowed or foreign nouns. I am trying to translate a phrase into Serbian for a friend—there is a line in a poem about “the tent of the mighty khatun”—khatun is the female counterpart to the khan. I am not sure what to do about the gender of the word “khatun,” since it is not really a proper name but it is also not a Serbian word—it has an ending that would make it seem like a masculine noun although it describes a female person. How should I translate this phrase? Treat it as a masculine noun (шатор моћног хатуна) or like a foreign feminine proper name (шатор моћне Хатуне)? Or something different? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello! I recently started to learn Serbian, but I am having trouble with the prepositions na and u. They both seem to translate to in. When do I use each? For example, why is it "Ja sam u Beogradu" and not "Ja sam na Beogradu"? Thanks a lot!

Moj prijatelj priča bosanski srpski (ijekavski). Ali, svi resursi je za ljude da uči ekavski. Da li da izaberem ijekavski ili ekavski? Vrijedi li pokušati da učim ijekavski umjesto ekavski? Ekavski će biti lakše (više resursi), ali moj prijatelj priča sa ijekavski. Šta da izaberem?

I’ve been studying Serbian for a couple months now and I’ve grasped a lot of the basic concepts online. I was looking for good textbooks for self-learning. I have a good grasp on Latin words but I haven’t started learning any cyrillic yet. I’m moving to Serbia at 18

First of all, please don’t tell me to not come to Serbia as I’ve already decided so just give me tips for when I arrive.

I’m an 18 year old boy moving to Serbia from the Faroe Islands alone. I’m moving to Niš to a local neighbourhood. My parents are both Serbian however they wanted to distance themself from it so they never taught me the Serbian language, so I can only speak the basics. I will be working for a remote company based in Sweden, on a Swedish salary. Ps I speak English, Swedish, Italian and French fluently: all self taught as mom and dad only speak English to me. What are some things I should know? I am learning Serbian however I want to know, in random Serbian neighbourhoods do most people my age speak fluent English regardless? When I say fluent, I don’t mean can hold a basic conversation, I mean speak it like a first language confidently? Obviously wages aren’t a concern, however what other things should I know about moving to a Serbian neighbourhood alone at 18? Ps I know that you see me as a complete foreigner, which is understandable, I get it

Hi there, I am researching my grandmother’s biological parents who were Serbian (but we don’t know much about them as she was abandoned as a baby after WWII and later adopted), I am coming across different name variations in different documents and am not sure of how common and interchangeable they are in Serbian.

For example, my grandmother’s birth certificate (written in German) lists her parents as “Berta Borislava Petrovic (born Labic)” and “Konstantin Petrovic”. Another document, which does not identify my grandmother, mentions a “Borislava-Berta Petrovic” and “Kosta Petrovic”, with birthdates. These dates allowed me to find in the digital archives of Belgrade some records of city residents under the name “Borislava Petrović (born Dabić)” and “Kosta Petrović” with the same birthdates.

Before assuming these are the same persons, is Kosta a common nickname for Konstantin? And is it normal for people to use a nickname in official documents in Serbia?

Are the names Borislava Berta (together) common as well? I know that Petrović is super common, so I’m hoping that the mother’s name is less so…

And last question about the mother’s maiden name: are Labić and Dabić close enough that they could have been confused? There may have been a language barrier at the time, and I noticed that the capital L in cursive Cyrillic looks a bit like a D…

to the moderators: don’t be mad at me if I posted this to the wrong community, I saw the similar posts there and think mine can relate to them:)

In Cyrillic they are represented by single characters (Њ, Љ) but in Latin they are represented by digraphs. The thing is that the South Slavic Latin orthographies were based off the West Slavic Latin orthographies, namely Czech. Ň is present in Czech and Slovak (ń in Polish) and Ľ exists in Slovak. So why not use these instead of the digraphs? Is there some historic pronunciation thing or something?
