With all the changes in Scouting America Shooting activities, what is changing in the SS Marksmanship Awards program?
Added the new online requirement info below. TIA.
Range Activity SAFEty Training is now available online. All Scouts BSA troops, Venturing crews, and Sea Scout ships who provide unit-level sponsored/planned range and target activities must have at least one registered unit leader 21+ years of age take the Range Activity SAFEty online training available on my.scouting.org. This individual must be present at the range during the range and target activity(s). Participating in this training will help ensure a unit understands Scouting America’s range and target activities policies.
This training is not required for district/council-led range and target activities and is not a replacement for certified instructors who must be present to operate ranges per the Guide to Safe Scouting & National Range and Target Activities Manual.
--New training required for all SBSA troops who provide unit-level range and target activities (at least 1 leader trained over 21 yo who is present)
--This training is renewed every 2 years similar to Hazardous Weather and other trainings.
--No in-person training is available. This is online/mobile-only training.
--This does not replace the required certified instructors per GTSS & National Range and Target Activities Manual.
To access the updated training, log onto my.Scouting.org and search the catalog in the BSA Learn Center for “Range Activity SAFEty.” For additional information regarding Scouting’s Range and Target Activities, please refer to the Guide to Safe Scouting and the National Range and Target Activities Manual.

My Ship has been fortunate to recruit Youth who are 14y/o who left scouting as Webelos/AOL and are missing some of the skills missed in Scouting, BSA. Our Ship is a general mission unit (Paddlecraft, Sailing, Aquatic Conservation, Whitewater rafting) so camping on the shore is necessary.
Looking for a reason why I can't celebrate/award these in Sea Scouts in Scoutbook. I thought Scouting, all programs, was for the Youth, and the skills that are universal to all programs, should be encouraged.
YISS.
Self explanatory. I’m interested in joining. Is there a membership due that I need to pay? Are there any extra fees? Is this program genuinely worth doing? What is the adult leadership like is it professionals?
I like them, but wish the dickies shirts were better fitting. I still think there should be some tolerances for units deciding on their own uniform, but I think it is a positive change
Any ideas to get a bulk order of surplus dixie cup hats at a reasonable price?
How long did it take for you to earn quartermaster? I’m 19 and at apprentice right now. I feel like I have no chance to get it at all.
Does National or another body within Sea Scouts have a list of Sea Scout Ships that have been named? My Ship is struggling to come up with a name that hasn't been used.
Between Google and ChatAI, they are batting 1000 with previously used names.
Thank you in Advance.
Hello....I have been looking for a current Quarterdeck training syllabus. I was told that ILSS had changed during COVID, and the two are distinctly different.
Does anyone have something to share? Also, who generally teaches Quarterdeck and ILSS/ILST/ILSC on your unit(curious).
Thanks in Advance
Congratulations to Ship 9024’s first Quartermaster, Gracie Nanzer!
Michigan Crossroads Council; Lakeshore District.
I am a new Skipper, looking for Program advice to motivate Sea Scouts to our gatherings. Our first year of Chartering was lots of adults placing activities on the calendar, year two is flopping with Sea Scouts not wanting to plan events and adults (cmt and parents) wanting to run the Ship. We wanted this to be Scout-led, but pushing off adults is giving everyone a sour taste. Any advice?
Fair winds...
Looking for (and to share) Sea Scout Ceremonies. Ideas and scripts. I have a detailed landship ceremony based on the one you can find at seascout.org that I am happy to share. But am looking for variations on a theme, Skipper minutes, Quartermaster charges, oaths of office, admission ceremonies, etc.
Are there college scholarships specific for Quartermasters similar to Eagle Scouts? Also, is there a Quartermaster equivalent to the National Eagle Scout Association?
The title says most of it, I love the ocean, boat stuff, and anything boy scout related. I can't find anything online of what the average ship does meeting to meeting or even requirements.
so what do yall even do..?
Hi all,
In new to this subreddit I'm seeking some advice
First, let me start by saying I'm best friends with the council boatswain so there are no hard feelings or toes being stepped on(He actually thinks me running is a great idea). Our current boatswain hasn't done much of anything with his position due to 1. sea scouting was new to our council when he became the boatswain and 2. the adult leaders on the council committee while active in other parts of scouting have a lack of motivation or effort to do anything with there role. Which I understand and that's fine in all. we haven't had an election for boatswain in 1 year and about 9 months which is fine due to the issue of covid we had last year; I feel that's actually a reasonable excuse. Now that covid restrictions are lifted I feel it's time to have that election and so do others in my ship. When we spoke to the council commodore and her husband (who is part of the committee I believe) we were hit with "we have a council boatswain". While this is true he acts as a filler for that position rather than an active member. When you have someone who has a genuine interest in the role and wants to do something with it and to try to not have an election due to what I would describe as laziness I find that very un scout-like.
Any advice?
We started a Ship last year in North Dakota and we are chartered by a dock & lift business. Just curious who most are chartered by!
Just wanted to say hello from the first Sea Scout Ship in Kansas. Hopefully there will be more soon.
