Currently I play either a lakey 5* on soprano, or a no-name that's very similar to a yamaha 5c depending on if I want an easy blow or a louder more difficult blow. I also play a Ponzol Custom 8*ish on baritone.
I found today I can get a used jody jazz HR 7* or 8* from a reputable supplier for a reasonable price - should I do it? Which one should I go for, or neither?
It's just coming up to gig season, and I think I'd benefit from a nice soprano piece - mainly for the flexibility. My natural inclination is to try to make my instrument sound sweet, but I'd like a mouthpiece that helps me get it a bit more out there more easily when I want to.
i'm new to saxophone, only been playing for a month, and i have been using the 2 strength reeds i got when i bought my horn. they're not great - my tone isn't particularly even, they squeak, i get loud kazoo-like shrieks every now and then - and my teacher told me last week to try giving a harder reed a go, so when i accidentally broke a bunch of my reeds yesterday, i figured i'd take the plunge and got myself a pack of vandoren java red 2.5s. the sound is delightful, super warm, but it's way harder to get that sound to happen, and i got very out of breath while practising today. my breathing is also audible while i play with the harder reed - i can hear a sort of gushing of air. how can i make this easier on myself, and get used to the new reed, other than the obvious 'through time and practise'? tomorrow i have a class and i don't want to embarrass myself in front of my teacher any more than i normally do :)
because i am so new to playing sax i don't currently have a particular reed soaking method i like, so if there is anybody else out there who uses java reds and does anything specific with them before use, i am also open to recommendations on that front
I started playing alto 5-6 years ago, then taking a break after which I started tenor. It’s been a year since then, which, until now, I’ve been renting a student sax. I have a pretty good sound considering my I paired it with a 5c. Renting it got pricey after a year so I decided to buy one.
I ended up opting for a yts-280 (which, additionally, I’d like some opinions on) as it was about $500CAN off. Anyways, I’ve now got a decent student sax that I’d like to pair with a quality mouthpiece. Preferably $150 Canadian. Anyone have suggestions on good ones/how to know what makes it good?
I played marching band/classical arrangements for about 6 years and have taken about a 3 year break. I’m looking to get back into playing and pick up jazz music. I was looking for some affordable jazz mouthpieces for someone who is picking back up playing.
Hi, it's bene 3 weeks since I started playing the tenor sax. I'm not trying to be a pro sax player, I'm doing It as a "serious hobby", but I'm a jazz enthisiast and I realy like the idea of playing and instrument. My goal is to be able to create a good sound and to compose some solos by improvising in a jazzish way. Now I'm mantaining a schedule of about One hour per day of practice, but I cannot afford a pro saxophonist to teach me how to at the moment so I recorded myself and I'm here with the hope that a good soul would point me what I should improve. The only way I have to learn Is via YouTube videos. During this scales I was trying to relax my jaw and bottom Lip. Sure it's not my best play but I think some of my usuale errors are there.
Thank you for the attention!
I am currently on the hunt for Rudy Vallée's Buescher TT alto saxophone as an academic project. And of course on my hunt I will come across other saxophones that apparently belonged to him, and this is just one out of a few. However this did not come with any other details except the following:
Buescher baritone saxophone, engraved on the bell, "To Rudy Vallee / From Bennie Krueger." Krueger was a jazz saxophonist who worked with the Original Dixieland Jazz Band in the 1910s and '20s and later served as Vallée's musical director.
It did not mention anything about the model or serial number. I am not familiar with baritone saxophones so I would like to see if anybody have any idea what type of baritone this is? This is actually the only images available in the auction listing (except for a third image near identical to the second).
I had the option to repair my old sax for well over $500 and I'm thinking about doing this instead, what do you all think?
Hi new to this sub and wanted advice on wether it’s possible to learn the saxophone on the weekends.
I know the general advice is it’s better to learn small amounts a day vs longer on one or two days but due to other commitments I don’t know if I can afford the time.
Between job taking up my 9-5, I also have gym and going to start Muay Thai soon which will be most of my time after work. Commute too takes a decent time so I felt I only have the weekends to really work on it.
I bought a saxophone a while ago but didn’t have the motivation to do it however now I want to really focus on it and learn it as I think it’s a beautiful and cool instrument, that said I know my learning curve will be long.
So would love your advice on how to approach this or if there are similar people who had to juggle different responsibilities and hobbies, would love to know how you did it !! Thank you !
What are your best tips for cleaning and maintaining a Yamaha YTS-480 saxophone to keep it looking great and performing well? I’d love to hear your daily routines!
Hi. I saw her yesterday in London and it was amazing. After the main theme - Glazunov: Concerto in E flat for alto saxophone & string orchestra she played something else. I have not heard which piece was that but that was amazing. Any chance someone else was there and know that piece?
Hey guys I’m a high schooler right now and I play primarily alto, I really want to continue playing in college and hopefully for the rest of my life. The only saxophone that I actually own is my alto it’s a beautiful Selmer reference 54 for anyone interested, what saxophones if any or other woodwinds should I buy to play in college for jazz and concert playing? Thanks!
Hey Im looking into buying a saxophone as a beginner I’ve looked at Yamahas . what are some decent but good brands I should look for also what should I look for when buying a saxophone ? Thanks in advance
For context: I’m the lead alto in my university’s big band, I have to double on sop, this didn’t immediately pose an issue,I have a curved sop (Im borrowing the schools straight horn) at home so I’m used to the feel of the horn, and I also play alto, tenor, and bari, so air support shouldn’t be an issue either. but for some reason I really cannot project on that thing to save my life.
Im currently playing on a Keilwerth SX 90 II, size 3 D’Addario Jazz Selects, and a Jhody Jazz HR* size 7*, ligature is a stock metal lig probably from an old 4c
Please help 🙏
My Bari sax playing kid really wants a soprano sax for Christmas and I found one used on marketplace for $600 but I see them new for like $675 online as well. How much would be a reasonable offer for a used one? (Slight bend on the bell edge)
It doesn’t stay in its spot Sometimes it even ends up under the saxophone. Im scared it might bend in some weird way. Anyone know how to deal with this?
I currently play on a King Zephyr alto 1951. Size 3S reeds.
I have a Yahama 5C mouthpiece that has served me well for a while. I’m finding it harder to get the tones I want and as an advancing player, I think I’m open for more power…
But I’m on a budget (kids and all!).
I have the choice right now to buy a used Vandoren A35 Java (not jumbo) or a Claude Lakey 4C. (Both are a good price right now..)
I’ve been researching both tip openings and I feel like they’re within a reasonable distance from what I’m currently playing. My focus is contemporary and funk.
My budget is $100 -ish.
Which option should I go with?
Note I have a used Vandoren jumbo Java a45 that either I’m not ready for, or it’s not great with the older sax (or something else). It sounds muffled and I have to work too hard (but feels too hard and not just due to being a non professional).
Thanks!
“Pure Imagination” from the 1971 film “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory”, originally performed by the late, great Gene Wilder with music and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley. This is my own arrangement.
Playing a Kessler Custom Performance Series soprano, Yamaha YAS-62 “Purple logo” alto, Selmer Mark VII tenor, and Kessler Solist baritone
Audio recorded and mixed in Ableton Live 12 Suite on a Lewitt LCT 440 PURE Condenser microphone, Universal Audio Volt 476p interface, on an Apple M1 iMac Video recorded on an iPhone 13 Pro and edited in Microsoft Clipchamp.
A buddy of mine was responsible for the audio engineering, but the rest I did on my own. Happy to answer any questions, and hope you enjoy it!
Hi all, I'm just getting back into sax after a 3-4 year break from it (played from 3rd grade-first year of college) and I'm running into some tuning issues on my tenor. I'm sure a lot of it is embouchure related. It seems like no matter what I do, my horn is incredibly sharp (I tune on a Bb and F#), to the point where I have to pull my mouthpiece so far out that it's basically falling off the neck. I've even tried pulling the neck out a little bit while still maintaining the ability to use my octave key, but it barely gets me there. I've tried multiple mouthpieces too, I'm not sure what the deal is. Any ideas?
Mouthpiece: Theo Wanne Brahma 7*, Otto Link Tone Edge 7
Sax: Julius Keilwerth EX90 Series II
My older sister has an old saxophone that she used to play with back in middle school. Now that i’m older i decided to try it out. Im currently teaching myself through youtube and I started a week ago. i learned a couple of chords and a couple of easy songs. I can also play a decent amount of guitar but that is also self taught. Im absolutely clueless when it comes to sheet music and name of chords (only certian chords) so is that something i need to learn too?
I was also wondering what i can do to actually pogress it can feel quite difficult to find things online that teach me new things to improve. Also is there any tips you guys have for me. Im gonna leave a video of me n my friend jamming out.
So I am playing bass clarinet in concert band and I am thinking of playing bari sax in jazz band. Any tips? Help would appreciated 👍
I currently play alto in a community band. Looking to by my next sax, not sure which one to buy. What do you guys think? Soprano, Tenor or Bari?
edit: Thanks for all your input, i've gone for the Tenor, Yany TWO10 to match my alto.
Luckily I ordered the legere through Amazon and they have a great return policy but I don’t know where to go from here. Should I try the 2.0 street legere signature. The current (3mo old) 2.5 legere still works and can produce a nice tone but I know synthetics only last 4-6 months from what I’ve heard so I need a backup reed for when this one starts to blow out. Ordered a 2nd 2.5 and it was too strong, returned it and ordered another 2.5 to see maybe it was just a difference in production. Nope still tough. Ordered 2.25 and it’s still too strong.
Does one just need to spend like 5-10 hours breaking it in or should I try the 2.0?
In the meantime I ordered the $15-3pk of the Rico orange from Amazon in 2.5 and they sound good right away. don’t like em quite as much as current 2.5 legere signature though.
The octave key is quit malleable on my saxophone. When I touch it even briefly, it bends. I always make a constant effort to bend it such that the key pad is covering the hole and when I play, I don't think there's any air escaping from the octave key. However, I hear a noticeably louder and fuller sound when I press the octave key pad down with my hands (playing g and c). I also have a hard time playing low notes like D and C and I'm not sure if it's a skill issue. What should I do?
Hey everyone! I just uploaded a jazz cover of a Christmas carol I recorded with three of my friends. We carefully arranged and recorded it ourselves to bring a fresh, jazzy twist to this classic holiday tune.
Check it out and let us know what you think! Your support means the world to us. 🎶

Hello everyone!
I've been playing sax for just over a year now, and I'm really enjoying it. Currently playing an entry level Alto. I had a question, since starting, on and off Ive had an issue with hitting the higher octave of D (all 6 buttons pressed with octave key). Especially going from C to D. I quite often get a sharp squeek. I don't have this issue with any other note and it's happening quite frequently recently (with new and old reeds).
I've agreed to play with some friends for a small event and I'm nervous about it just because of this. Does anyone have the same issue? Is it my blowing technique/style? Or could it be the sax itself? Any advice? Thanks so much in advance!
