The world of sport is rich with a lot of variety and long distance running can often contain a unique type of finely tuned athlete. They can create some incredible time and distance records that can echo their name down the ages due to the sheer resilience. Then there is the more comical side, who are often raising money for charity and who may take a more fun approach to running. Either way, you have to applaud the effort that goes into this pursuit and enjoy the entertaining performance along the way.

**Running backwards**

Xu Zhenjun completed a rather bizarre but equally impressive feat by running the whole Beijing International Marathon backwards and set a time of 3 hours and 43 minutes. Kathryn Clewley holds the women's reccord when she completed one in 4 hours and 26 minutes in Canada.

**The Barkley Marathon**

Jasmin Paris became the first women to finish this 100 mile trek which changes every year and consists of 5 x 20 mile loops that must be completed in under 60 hours. It takes a super human effort to achieve this and she only beat that time by 1 minute and 39 seconds.

**Half Marathon with a Hula Hoop**

Betty Shurin, who runs a hoop fitness class in New York, decided to add a new spin to her long distance running. She is the official Guinness world record holder for the fastest half marathon while keeping a hula hoop suspended and achieved it in 3 hours and 3 minutes.

**The Longest Race**

There are ultrarunners who start in Queens, New York and complete the Self-Transcendence race which covers 3,100 miles every year. It takes participants 52 days to finish and is done on a single half mile long loop which must be completed 5,649 times.

**A High Heel Marathon**

It takes a great effort and super sturdy legs to run a marathon, but to do it in 3 in stilettos would be immensely hardcore. That's what Irene Sewell, a former ballroom dancer, achieved when she finished the 7 Bridges Marathon in Tennessee in 7 hours and 27 minutes.
