Ikamper DXL, what roof rack for my Rav4 or Subaru Outback

Hey looking into the Ikamper DXL for my little family of 3 (4 in the near future), we are trying to decide which car to put the rooftrack and rooftop tent on, feels like Rav4 would be better. Do you guys have any recs on which roofrack would be the safest for us? I was looking around and the prinsu roofrack looks like it maybe best. Thanks for any information, we are just getting started in looking into everything.

iKamper Skycamp 3.0 + Hyundai Santa Fe

We've had the Skycamp 3.0 since June 2022. We have used it for about 1,500 kms, so not much. We have it mounted on a 2015 Santa Fe Sport, using Thule crossbars. The more I read on this sub, the more I feel we are just lucky nothing has gone wrong. Most people who have the full size iKamper are mounting them to massive vehicles and trucks. Most same sized vehicle (RAV4s) have the minis. Are we being outrageous or dangerous using this vehicle with the Skycamp 3.0?

Capillary Action Issues with Mattress Touching Tent Fabric?

Hi all:

GFC Superlite owner here, which is 50 inches wide. Big Agnes has offered to replace my leaking 50-inch Hinman mattress with a comparable model or unrestricted store credit because the 50-inch Hinman is discontinued. BA’s closest match is a 52-inch Captain Comfort, which looks amazing, but it’s been drilled into me since I was a kid that you shouldn’t have anything touching the sides of your tent. I’ve seen posts about GFCs, which are all 50 inches wide, with Exped MegaMat Duos (long wide double size), which are also 52-inch, but no mentions of capillary action issues. Is it somehow not a problem? Even in the rain? I’d rather get a replacement mattress than store credit, so I’d be very grateful if someone could confirm before I have to choose. Thanks in advance for any responses!

GoFSR Aspen V2 ordered

Just ordered the GoFSR Aspen V2 with the crossbars. Did a good amount of reading through the sub, looked at posts for iKamper, GFC, Roofnest, and a few amazon brands. It came down to the IKamper BVD Duo, Aspen Lite, and the Aspen V2.

Ultimately, I picked the V2 because I needed roofracks, so that ruled the Lite out, and the Duo vs Aspen V2 was really just which brand did I (anecdotally) see mentioned more in my search through the sub in the last 2yr. I know brands can change QC, production facilities, so I didnt want to look at reviews from before covid or during the hight of it.

GovX 10% discount basically covered tax and shipping. Getting this for two different vehicles. Ill be able to keep this on my 2004 Ranger for my solo trips to Joshua Tree, Idyllwild, big bear, Yosemite, etc. Then when my wife and I do family trips, I'll swap it over to her crosstrek wilderness for the two of us (dogs can sleep in the car because they are stinky and will lick my face in my sleep)

Tips for washing car with RTT still attached

Howdy, as stated in the title I was wondering how other people have found success washing their car with their RTT still attached. I usually go to a drive thru car wash but that ain’t happening. I have a 4Runnner with Falcon Rooftnest XL, so it covers a fairly large surface area. We do not have the ability to wash at home, given it’s an apartment complex with no long hoses, but was thinking I’d go to a self car wash location and just try to avoid hitting the RTT. Thanks for any advice/tips from others.

Painting raw square tubing. For RTT mount

I m planning to attach some square tubing in ought with no weld brackets to my trailer for an RTT mount

How would you prep and paint the tubing for more functionality than appearance ? Metal is raw My prelim thought Light sand for burrs Wipe with iso alcohol for grease etc Primer ( what type etching ? Rust-Oleum self etching , non automotive type or automotive ?

Than finish coat 2 to 3 light caots, any recs ? I think I don't need to sand down the metal since I'm using self etching primer. Anyone confirm ?

Inside of metal prep? Or such? Or just some plastic caps to keep moisture etc out?

Overlanding in outback wilderness

I have a 23 Outback wilderness bought with intentions of overlanding yet still being practical. really just started looking into rooftop tents and im liking the roofnest falcon 2 XL. My issues are-

  1. idk if it will fit, like is the falcon 2 xl way too big for an ouback or will it be fine.

  2. Are the Thule crossbars strong enough to hold it or do i need to get a full roof rack?

I cant find much info so if anyone is able to help itd be much appreciated.

Inspired Overland RTT - has anyone removed the mounting bars on the underbelly of the tent?

This looks to be a pretty simple job to accomplish, just a few screws and bolts. I could use that extra 1.25 inch for clearance. I have a capable roof rack to attach to.

Mounting Help

i have a front runner tent but i honestly don’t want to drop the $$ for the slimline rack if i don’t have to. I am using the universal mounting brackets right now, but i am just now realizing that it will slide out (show in the pic where the ends aren’t covered lol). So, are there any other brackets to keep this same set up out there? Or any other ideas that doesn’t involve dropping the $800+ on a rack? I’ve seen some flat racks for ~$200/300 on Amazon, but don’t really know if it’ll just land me in the same spot in terms of mounting. Thank you in advance!

Wrap or Spray rooftop tent?

I have had an ikamper mini for three years, dealing with UV damage. I have tried to buff it out and it seems to come back right away.

Should I get it bed liner sprayed or wrapped. I can’t do it myself so what type of place should I get to service. Any recommendation in the DMV?

Deciding on a RTT

I'm looking for a hard shell RTT thats lightweight, sleeps 2-3(50-65"width), built well and can handle harsh conditions: wind, rain, snow. I was looking at the Ikamper mini and then the GOFSR Aspen Lite popped up. I believe the mini was around 130lbs while the aspen lite is 100lbs. How does that tonneau cover hold up? I will have the rtt on for majority of the year except winter. Unfortunately i cant find any in stores to look at.

Any other recommendations on a RTT.

RTT Recommendations? (Canada)

Hey RTT people. Just came across this sub.

I am looking to get a RRT for my 2012 Jeep JKU Wrangler.

There’s so many options nowadays.

Can anyone recommend me the best bang for the buck manufacturer/model tent that people are buying nowadays?

I want a super nice one but my financial planner (wife) is a cheapskate.

FSR Aspen Lite XL Thoughts?

Hey guys,

I currently own a Gazelle Tent for our camping adventures and we combine it with some exped sleeping pads. We have a ford ranger and do some off-roading / camping / overlanding whatever you want to call it 2-8x a year depending on work, schedules, groups, etc.

I’ve been looking into a wedge tent for a little here and almost pulled the trigger on an Aspen Lite XL a few times. Then we swayed for an IKamper and then decided against it.

Just trying to get some thoughts on people that have a wedge tent and if they like it. Size is concerning since my husband is 6’5 (he’s a bigger person too) and I am 6’0. Do you think we would actually comfortably fit in a wedge tent and like it?

The only time we’ve used a a rooftop tent was a crap smittybilt tent many many years ago.

Thanks for any information or input!!

Static weight questions

I have a smittybilt RTT soon to get a hard shell roof next to put on my 2015 f150 with my leer 100xl camper shell. I’m having a hard time figuring out which crossbar/rack combo will work with the weight of 2 people, maybe a dog, and the tent weight. What are you all using to support that weight?

Bolt stuck in track?

I’m trying to move my RTT more towards the front of the roof rack. A couple of the bolts that sit in the tracks don’t seem to want to move. Any ideas? I’m trying to make enough room for my awning, it’s catching on the posts for the rain fly.

Finally got all the pieces for the new summer setup!

Really wish I had gone with the bigger 270 awning but other than that I’m super happy with how everything turned out. Can’t wait to get camping!

Where to buy a RTT and get it mounted on a 2013 VW Toaureg?

Doing a mid life crisis thing and driving from Tennessee to somewhere out west to go and buy a RTT and get it professionally installed. Then I want to spend a few weeks mountain biking (easy trails non of that red bull extreme stuff) set up my telescope to take some deep space pictures and just enjoy outdoor life. I thought that I would drive to CVT in Oregon since I need a 4 person tent with an an annex around the ladder on the ground for my dogs to sleep. However, it looks like all of the locations might have closed down? Is there somewhere besides CVT that is recommended? Also, any places you suggest that I stop on the way?

FSR High Country V2

Does anyone have this tent yet. It seems drastically different than the original. I am leaning towards an aspen light but the High Country v2 has a better closed footprint for my old military trailer (m416). It’s only 4 feet wide. Trying to see how easy set up and breakdown is. Only videos currently out there are from FSR.

FSR Aircore mattress owners

For those that have this mattress, what are you using for a pump? I’m looking for something that would inflate and deflate. The link on their page goes to a handheld vacuum on Amazon, which doesn’t seem like it’d do both jobs.

Any reason I couldn’t make these cross-bar risers out of 2x4s?

I need a set of these for my tent to clear my cab above my rack: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B091V67VDR/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Any reason I should not just make my own from 2x4s?
