A battle of the greats! How well can 1 do and will it be enough to stand out from the rest, stay tuned, we’re going to find out tonight!

I know what I’m casting first. There’s no question. That’s a weighted wacky rig. With none other than a Creme worm. Period. That’s the first thing to leave the boat every single time. What about when I’m not casting, what then? The first thing that comes to mind is my rapala jointed crank bait. Then I often interrupt myself and contemplate the Kvd1.5, lastly I then confuse myself with the storm and the choice of it. Funny how I’m so confident with creme but can’t speak definitively on my choice of crank bait. Often I find myself not committing fully until I catch and then I’m reminded of how great all three of these lures are. What a nice combination to have. I’m thankful to have found these lures. So what now? Well now I wanna shootout. A old tried and true method. I’m going to pit these lures against one another with the hope, one lure, takes the cake. We start tonight, all three will be there, used the same duration of time and I will repeat this change for round two next week. O there’s fun to be had, let the fight begin!

To catch or not to catch, what’s biting in quantity

Have the rock bass been active, overwhelmingly so. How about them cats? Not bad if you ask me. The fight of a cat is nice the catch is quite honestly one of my favorites. Being limited to the species surround me. It’s a nice bite and reel, I won’t complain. Catfish are pretty cool if you take the time to appreciate them. Pretty cool fish. Couple times this year I’ve got hot on the cats getting upwards of 2 per hour other times not so much. Like all things fishing. Any who, last night we decided last minute to go try our luck at a local cat bar. Joking. We grabbed the boat hit the water and headed to “the spot” started casting then trolling and soon enough we found ourselves on. Good thing to because I’d have no content typically if all I had was an hour to fish. Or very little unless lucky, it’s fishing so ya never know you just stack the data in your favor and roll the lures. We hit for two and one of which was a friends first catch and catfish. Very cool to all that know this feeling. So we celebrate https://youtu.be/VnZsyvJXTEE catch me later fellow anglers, captain Joker out

Fishing fails. A short that beats you up.

O the stories. It’s never the same hearing another tale. Nothing compares to personal experiences. It’s an understatement to say #fishingfails shorts aren’t everywhere you look. They’re great content. Exciting and jammed packed with chuckles. And the size, the size of the fish always seems to be “decent” I would say. The ole “fish got away story” told a hundred times in a room with 50 people but what about that short. Me personally, I’d rather to have boat that fish. Took a photo with that fish and celebrated with that fish. Those are tough breaks, I know first hand. I’m not alone. I know this. Why do they seem so large? It’s confusing to me. Why is it that, each one off seems like the best one, I’ve ever had on! It’s a terrible gut feeling, speaking for myself. I’m invested and I know that, I try hard, pole down, line tight. But, I forgot the net! Tough night with a few laughs. Take a peek. Catch me later. Captain Joker https://youtu.be/GzT87ZfmwA4

A recording to keep the nay sayer’s at bay. The old and true “the fish that got away story”

How often are you haunted Day and night, reminded of only the fight. The fish that got away. Or fishes if you’re like myself. Ahhh how easy it is to remind myself of the big one on the pier that broke me. The monster at the creek that bite my line. The story goes on and on. How the heck do you get anyone to believe when all you’re talking about are the legends that escaped. Funny you should ask. I record. By I can as often as I can and regardless of the situations I want pictures and videos. You see that one there that jumped, shook me off. Good 4 pounder. Tough to know but as I say the fish that got away is always the better half of a legend. Often it’s quite difficult or picky annoying to ready the camera, try and get the right shot or even just not drop my phone in the water. Haha still haven’t done that. Although I’ve lost quite a few items I’m not particularly happy about. Never the less. I’m offering a video a week minimum on YouTube. While we all have the stories of the one that got away, a little video proof never hurt. A few fish never hurt the eyes neither, if I can get a small following I will continue to blog and video blog my fishing and otherwise outdoor content. The bites been there, the night brings some fun is an attitude of love. I’ll keep an eye out for my fellow fishing friends, be sure to say hello. Until then I’ll keep fishing. Day and night for the one big bite that got away. Keep your poles down, lines tight and catch me later. Captain Joker

TheNyteByte a time worth trolling for the plentiful

Day and night the fish bite. How when where and why couldn’t be explained in just a sentence. How do you know when to set a block of time to get out there. When is it best? Juggling priorities, wouldn’t it be nice to know when’s best or better put, plentiful? That’s how I try to look at fishing. Otto spear be fishing but I sure do like catching as I’ve said. Some of my best work is at night, particular nights. There a certain type of night I’m looking for. Wind water pressure and moonlight are the keys in choosing the right setting. Not so much location as data. I find in my data and research that many things correlate to success and failure. Knowing how to spot those data points are crucial to a plentiful night. Thinking back a year standing on the side of a well known pond I would hand never thought I’d dive this deep and evolve so continually. Standing there all I thought or could think of.... I want to catch a fish. Oooo was that a bite. Hahah the simple times. Now and gradually seeing the science of the bite. The technology behind the tools used. It’s quite amazing how one can be so intrigued with the great mystery of fishing. There’s so much accessible information to the common day fishermen. YouTube being a solid backdrop for all things fishing. I find myself there often looking for different interpretations of data weather patterns and theory based on data points. The evening is much similar and different in key points related to weather patterns. Keep a log of your area and write key weather data that can be reflected on for future trips. Knowing your area your weather your pressures are key points to be plentiful. Not all days bring fish but put the evidence to work for you. Good luck out there anglers and thanks for the read. Weather permitted we’re fishing, an Attitude that gets the ball rolling

How often are you fishing solo? A buddy or even a team? The reality is we all need to get our lines out to catch the bite but it’s not easy. Busy schedules, family and more familiar obligations out with the importance of fishing. Or do they, most would argue family before fishing but I find that’s often a struggle haha A lot of my free time comes from children being in bed and the wife satisfied with my daily duties, and that can be challenging let’s say to grab a body and hit the water. Not only are there conflicts in schedule but even in fishing location style And comfort. What always get the ball rolling for me is the saying a pal of mine preached “ya can’t catch a fish of your pole ain’t in the water” thinking about this makes me want to juggle my schedule and hop up and hit the water. There’s a certain expectation of sentiment when certain to fish. An excitement in which all senses start to calculate your odds at success. What a great feeling. Just knowing at such and such time I’ll be on the water casting for the big one. My favorite fish to day dream about are those of the Muskie species and that of the bass species. Often I catch many bass but have been surpassed by the stealth of the Muskie. But I dream. Finding myself on YouTube watching the success of others and sharing in it from afar. Wondering about the fight the bite and the ultimate first meeting we’ll share together as I haul it in. Catch and release btw. Fish first mindset of course. These thoughts are persistent and are the drive in getting out there. While its fishing and not catching I sure do enjoy both and believe I’ll be out there every time, weather permitted. Where to fish, what lures are actually catching and are you doing everything you can to best yourself

Ever wonder if you’re even in the right place, is the graph working right and or your YouTube referred lures up to the test? You’re not alone, in fact I often see angles including myself second guessing everything their doing. That’s normal, the free content everywhere makes it seem like all you need to do is show up with the hottest latest gear and you’re the next big thing. That never seems to be the case for me here in the ROC. I’ve struggled a bit grasping at what works and what doesn’t and when I say a bit that’s a understatement. Fishing’s a hobby. Nothing more. Or is it? I find myself wondering did I do everything right, should I of cared once more towards that down tree, the large pit on my graph or was my depth correct? Most times I feel confident although not bulletproof, I’m confident. You need to be that way, think I’ve done my research I’ve put the time in with my gear and I’ve scored this location and now it is time to put them in the boat. (14’Crestliner w/25hpYamaha 2stroke) Cast after cast working the reel to stay clear of birds nests, back and forth think I know they’re there, they were just there. What changed? Everything, fishing has become so complex even in its most simple form. Take current for example, a slight change in current could prove to be a more difficult task and this can be true for all variables related to fishing. Stay focused staying confident and very patient. Patient. Nothing wrong with a little music or vibeing to help get in the zone. Get focused. Get ready to best yourself. Here in Monroe county you will test every limit of your patience. There are moments when all signs are green and yet nothing on the line. Luck? Is there any luck in fishing? Luck is like anything you work at, start creating your own luck by putting the effort in reap the merits of your “luck”. Putting every little hint trick lesson learned advice and lack thereof is the real discussion. Help? Are you getting help? Have you had an opportunity to help another find more success, has someone helped you find it... While I end this discussion I think upon a few honey holes a few key lures lines and combos. I think upon hours and hours of patience. Nights out until sunrise and day time passed to night and I am thankful to have progressed and willingly able to share insight information and support to local anglers and abroad. Thanks for the read. Captain Joker

Where to go and what to use for steelhead?

I heard the steelhead fishing in Rochester is really good. I just got my first pair of chest waders. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me a good place to go and what sort of tackle I should throw. Not using a fly rod btw.

Thanks.

Irondequoit Bay Fishing help

I have been out fishing in Irondequoit Bay on my kayak and have had minimal luck, even though I know the fish are there! There is one spot in particular near Empire Boulevard on the Irondequoit side where I get surrounded by huge fish jumping! What species could this be? Any tips or tricks?

What my husband was thinking 15 minutes after launching today and I had caught 5 nice bass before we cleared the marina into the canal. My poor honey got skunked though. 8-0

Lower Falls/Dam/Gorge - salmon run/steelhead fishing

Anyone been down there in the past few days for fishing? Are the salmon running hard yet? I was just down there today and it was packed, but it didn't seem like people were catching much. I went downstream a bit to get away from the crowds and drifted some egg sacs, but no luck. I saw some jumping out of the water, but not as many as at Webster Pier where I've been this past week.

Small stream fishing

I'm looking for small stream spots around Rochester that I can fly fish for trout. I got myself a short creek rod this Spring for quick day trips around/outside the city. I've been limiting myself primarily to Irondequoit Creek this Spring. Haven't had much luck behind the playground at Philbrick (Linear) Park but a really good day behind Panorama Plaza. I know there are some great waters to fish in the area but, I'm looking for some sweet spots in the 15'-30' wide waters. Any suggestions?

EDIT: I know it's not protocol to divulge such info on the webs so, feel free to PM me. I fish alone (no angling buddies), only on Tues/Weds (you'll never see me), and I release everything I catch (which is never much)

Fish to target this time of year?

I got back into fishing late in the year and have really been back into it the past couple months. What's the best species to target this time of year? Anyone still going for bass? I got a nice largemouth at the end of Salmon creek near the lake but that has been the only one.

Salmon run fishing?

I've been doing some more fishing this summer and really want to take advantage of the salmon run this year, as it's been something I've always wanted to do, but always seem to miss. I don't know much about it, so am hoping to get some basic pointers.

  1. When is the salmon run in Rochester? When can you catch then?

  2. What are some of the common and best places to fish for them?

  3. What kind of gear/bait do you need?

  4. Are there any specific DEC rules about catching salmon?

  5. Are they safe to eat?
