Possum update- bloodwork

Possum's vet called me today saying how she believe he may have FIP because of his increased levels. I am so incredibly worried. I know there are off-brand under a million dollar treatments, but there really is no way of telling for sure that he has fip. Anyone have any experience with this?

Adopted 3 y/o selectively friendly, some hissing/spitting. Still adjusting or just her personality?

Hello!

I adopted this gorgeous girl (Sadie) a few weeks ago now after a very quick foster fail. As this is my first shelter cat I did not know what to expect, but just assumed she would be cautious and skittish when I first brought her home... boy was I wrong!! She was cool as a cucumber. The first photo in this post is actually just moments after I first opened the crate door in her new home. She sauntered out, made it a few feet and plopped down to hang over the ledge of the table 😂. She seemed immediately comfortable and very friendly. She likes pets, head and chin scratches AND loves being brushed. She has slept at my feet every single night including our first night together. And she has been just as friendly and chill around all my friends & family members that she's met. The first week or so she was quite attached to me, basically following me from room to room, always finding a spot to plop down just a few feet away from whatever I was doing. Now that she's settled in a bit more, she prefers to sleep half the day away on my bed, though when she is more active she does still like to come hang out right next to me. She also sleeps almost exclusively on her side or belly up, which I understand is a sign of trust and comfort to sleep exposing her vulnerable underside.

Despite all of the above, she is NOT a cuddler, and prefers not to be held. Which is okay (as much as I wish I could snuggle her all day long) and I just figured that was her personality and know some cats don't care for that type of affection. She will tolerate me picking her up/holding her for short periods of time, but usually squirms or does a little meow or light nip pretty quickly to be let down. She did hiss ONCE when I picked her up, which surprised me a bit as this was after a number of days with me already and plenty of other times I had picked her up without that level of reaction (though she also hissed when the vet picked her up at her last visit). She has not hissed at me since that one time (and I have continued to pick her up occasionally) but today while she was enjoying some pets, I thought I'd see if she would tolerate an arm under her, and she did a quick nip and then made the alarming SPIT sound before jumping off the bed. First quick question I have... is spitting an escalation from hissing? Or are they fairly equal responses?

Anyways, TLDR; I guess since this is my first foster/shelter cat, I am trying to manage my expectations around her behavior given a somewhat unknown background (see bottom of the post for what I DO know). Does the hissing/spitting signify that even though by all appearances she is well and settled in, she actually is still getting comfortable around me, and has her guard up when it comes to that level of physical handling? But that may change over time? Or is it as I first suspected, that she's just not a cuddler, and likely never will be.

Just like getting a pet used to having their nails clipped, I don't want to completely abandon my attempts to sneak an extra nuzzle in here and there if there is room for her to eventually grow comfortable with it. And trust me, I know it's been NO time at all, just a few short weeks - but her instant chillness and seeming level of comfort threw me for a loop.

So I am looking for some general advice/insight on how best to navigate this new relationship since I simply don't have the previous experience with a shelter cat and how they develop once in a new home! Appreciate any insights!

Sadie's Background: most recently she was living on the streets, and spent a few months as a stray before she was caught - however the shelter believes she was absolutely a house cat and pet at one point in time as she was spayed. She is estimated to be about ~3 years old.

Temporary foster home needed- Oct2024-Feb2025

Ontario, Canada

Hello, I have two male cats (Leo & Luna), both neutered, domestic shorthair.

I am an Indian female residing in Hamilton alone. My father has been diagnosed with liver problem and might be requiring a surgery this yeah end and I wish to be there with him for this. I will be gone for about 3-4 months and am unable to take the cats with me. I was recently laid off from work in a mass layoff and hence cannot afford the boarding places (tbh even with my job I couldn't afford them, hell expensive)

I'm barely making the ends meet at this point, going through a financial crisis especially with the surgery coming. My cats temporarily need a foster home please. Any help or leads are highly appreciated. I will pay for their food, treats and litter of course. They're both super friendly with humans, not amazing with other pets but slowly gel up with time.

I would hate to loose my cats giving them away for adoption if I cannot find them a temporary home. Please help your girl out.

Rescued cat losing hair.

I have taken in a young rescue cat. He is doing OK but has areas of very thin hair. Not bare but very thin.

He is skinny but not bony. He had 2 ticks and would not cooperate with me removing them. I put some Catego, Fripionil based flea and tick treatment between his should blades. The hair fell out where I put it but the skin looks good and is not inflamed. His spirits picked up a great deal after the tick treatment. I am brushing him several times a day. Feeding him Purina Naturals and got him to eat some raw egg this afternoon.

Any advice on restoring the thin hair? I did notice him licking his side today where it is thin. I hope it is just a nutrition thing. I have seen Catego used without problems on my cat and many others.

Ticks and Lymes Disease are very bad where I live and taking precautions are important for me and my other cat.

I will be keeping this cat and I hope he can get along with my 13 YO cat. He is staying on my porch in my cats heated cat cozy. My cat is pretending he does not exist and is now spending his time indoors instead of outside in his cozy.....

Bean's Medical Journey - Ohio, USA

Hello! This is Beans, kitten estimated to be about 11 months old who is currently going through plethora of medical issues with no fault of his own. Some more details from the first surgery can be seen in my first post: Bean's Medical Journey

He was a kitten from the streets no one wanted. Shelters and anyone we asked didn't want to take on the burden of a kitten with vision impairment, so my partner and I made a decision to take him in our already too big family of cats. We have food and coffee theme with our cats. Some of the names include Waffles, Hammy, Mocha, Latte, and we named this tiny black kitten Beans.

on February 29/ March 1st, we noticed Bean's lack of energy and vomiting multiple times. We rushed him to the Veterinary ER. We were told there is an obstruction in his intestines, and need to be surgically removed. There were many theories as to why this happened including polyps in his throat, random inflammation from allergies, but no one had a definitive answer. It was not parasitic, no foreign objects were found, no underlying issues found.

During the pre-op, Beans went into cardiac arrest, and was resuscitated by CPR. Surgeons completed the abdominal surgery and also surgically removed a polyp in his throat. He was in the hospital for 4 days and came back home.

Everything seemed fine, until two days later we noticed that his colon was prolapsed from his rectum. We rush him to the ER again, and Beans went into his 2nd emergency surgery in less than 2 weeks. Part of his colon was necrotic and they surgically removed 12 inches of his small intestine. Surgeons conducted an exploratory examination to see if they could find anything that may have been the cause of the first intestinception, but they could not.

Beans was in the hospital for several days again, and was discharged. 2 days later, we noticed him having a short spurt of seizures, and again drove him to the ER for the 3rd time in 2 weeks. We were there from 2 am to 7 am, the doctor came out and told us they would like to do a CT scan of his abdominal area, not his brain, because they are worried there may be another obstruction, and if that was the case there needs to be a 3rd abdominal surgery.

At this point, our bill had been over $14,000, which our pet insurance denied to cover. The hospital estimated another $4000 for CT scan, and possible $7000 more for the 3rd surgery in 2 weeks. We couldn't understand why an abdominal CT was needed 2 days after he was opened up and exploratory exam was done. We just asked the hospital to not conduct a CT Scan, but to monitor him for day, conduct a blood test and would like to have him treated if there was another seizure.

The next day, hospital called and was told Bean's prognosis was not good. They believed he needed the 3rd surgery in 2 weeks which he was too weak for. We drove to the hospital and was promptly directed into the "say good bye" room. Doctor came in with Beans, with feeding tube in his nose with a catheter in his arm, loudly meowing and actively trying to climb onto our shoulder. We are told by the doctor although they didn't know the cause, they believed he had a brain damage and obstruction in his intestines (again) from where it was sutured, and we should euthanize him. He is not eating. He has no limb awareness. It will be the best option for him to be euthanized. We refused. Things felt off, Beans was incredibly ably active and vocal, which we were told to "not take it as a sign of cognitive awareness." We wanted a 2nd opinion, an exam from our primary vet, we would like to take him to the comfort of his home. We are advised to from the doctor to schedule at home euthanisia within 24 hours, and we left the hospital with Beans and a bill that was now approximately $16,000.

Right when we got home, Beans walked straight to the kitchen and begin DEVOURING the cat food left over from the other cats. To say that we were shocked and angry was an understatement. He ate two cans worth of wet cat food, and promptly went to sleep in his bed. This was two days ago, March 17. We are still trying to wrap our heads around what happened that day. This veterinary hospital was the one ran by the university, which is ranked top 3 in the country. The subjective objective assessment plan report we got did not match with the Beans we were seeing with our eyes.

He has had a rough past few weeks, and his road to recovery is far from over. We are consulting our primary vet, and looking around for other specialists in the area for 2nd and 3rd opinions. We are consulting a veterinary y nutritionists on Bean's diet moving forward.

We are trying to stay cautiously optimistic, and just keep doing what we have always done. Advocate for Beans and keep him comfortable and help him heal. He is still loopy from the medication, and although obviously much slower than normal, is walking around, eating the normal amount, drinking water, using the litter box and pooping solids.

We are asking for any support on Bean's sudden and unexpected medical expenses. No amount is too small, we want to give Beans the best fighting shot at life.

Thank you so much for reading, and thank you for all of your kindness and support for Beans.

🆘 URGENT! RESCUE NEEDED! 💕Puffy Face Maxence Needs Rescue Help💕 At Devore Animal Shelter, San Bernardino County, CA

MAXENCE needs rescue help. Very cute but just not comfortable in a shelter environment. Pretty grey and white tabby.

Many rescues are willing to save cats but they needs fosters to provide a safe space to allow an animal to decompress. It also gives a rescue time to evaluate the cat and make plans.

Do you have a small space in your house, a bathroom, a room with a window, where a cat can quarantine for 14 days? Reputable rescues (which we can refer you to) will then have some time to make a plan, either work on getting the cat adopted or another solution. People probably feel they will be stuck with a cat permanently which makes them decide against it. The reputable rescues are able to make plans and won’t dump cats on you. Thanks for your time in reading this.

🆘 URGENT! RESCUE NEEDED! 💕Beautiful Black Cat Needs Rescue Help💕

PIBB has been overlooked at the shelter because he/she was on quarantine hold and now is off. The shelter notes are vague and say. “Trying to escape touch of asses-a-hand…” The way the shelter assesses a cat is they use the miniature plastic hand on a stick called an Assess-a-hand, it feels like it’s from the dark ages and they stick it through the cage and if the cat reacts in a scared manner or lashes out at this fake hand coming at them, then it seems they categorize it as rescue only. PIBB must have overreacted and was put on quarantine hold. So now PIBB is urgent because she/he has already spent more time at the shelter than standard.

it’s an unfair way to evaluate a cat. Who wouldn’t retract from some creepy plastic hand coming thru a cage.

How can you help? Become a foster!

Greenville SC rescue kitten in need of a home

Meet Pixie! Here's a bit of backstory:

I found her and her sister as stray kittens in a very rough area of Atlanta last year. Since I work as a volunteer at a local Greenville (South Carolina) PetSmart for adoption events, I took them with me back to Greenville in the hopes that they would be adopted and could hopefully live happy lives off the streets in someone's home. Ideally they would have been adopted together, but those placements usually take longer to accomplish and when an adoption application came in only for Pixie's sister, it seemed like splitting them up was likely the easiest way to get them into loving homes.

A couple of months ago Pixie was finally adopted. I was so relieved and happy for her! Pixie is shy at first, and I knew she would need special care integrating into her new home. I went over this with her new parents - emphasizing how to slowly introduce her to rooms in the home so that she wouldn't be frightened. Apparently this instruction was not heeded and she was so terrified that she was returned after only 24 hours. I was heartbroken. Before being adopted, Pixie had been living in a kennel at PetSmart. I could not bear her being back there (especially without her sister) so I decided to take her into my home as a foster.

With love and gentleness, she opened up to me and she is an absolute sweetheart! She loves playtime and cuddles up to me every night.

Now a bit about me, I have 3 cats and am going to be relocating to Munich (Germany) in a month. I love Pixie, but due to logistical reasons I cannot adopt her myself. If anyone knows of a loving person in South Carolina who is in need of a companion, please DM me!

More hoarding case intakes 💔

You can find previous info on this case in my post history.

Last time we visited the home, I had mentioned there were several other cats still with the family that were being hidden from us.

Tonight, the call I’d been expecting finally happened. They’re ready to surrender more of the cats to us.

This is of course is going to mean another jump in our vet costs as they will need to be immediately assessed and treated. Then fixed and vaccinated. Based on the previous cats that came from here, we know to expect, at the very least, URI’s.

We are still carrying a balance of $700 at the clinic, so this is coming at a very bad time. It feels like we will never catch up.

Please share and donate if you can. Every little bit helps!!

Should I be worried about this eye? Help.

I posted a few weeks ago about the fact that I took in a stray cat that was pregnant. She had been coming around my house and was skinny. I later noticed the pregnancy so I brought her inside. I’ve never done this before so please forgive my ignorance on the topic. One kitten has an eye still closed when the other 3 have both open. Should this be a concern? They are 10 days old. I’m not sure what to do. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Pregnant cat

I have a very pregnant cat who spends most of her day under my cars and nights under my neighbors house. She’s very small to be pregnant. She’s so sweet and friendly! I reached out to a few rescues in my area who all told me they are beyond capacity but to bring her to a local shelter (no kill). I know it is kitten season. I am very busy at work this week but I want to try to bring her in but from what I understand i may have to wait hours. Is there anything I can do in the meantime to make her comfortable? I have given her food twice a day, clean water and created a little house for her which she doesn’t seem to care about. I cannot bring her inside as I have a cat of my own and would not want to bring her inside before getting checked for any illnesses and fleas. Located in Florida.

Tips for adopting out older kittens and adult cats?

Hi all! I volunteer with a small foster-based rescue. The org hasn’t even recovered from last kitten season (did it ever really end?) and now are getting hit again with rescue requests. One thing we are struggling with is adopting out older kittens and adult cats that have grown up in our care. We have our adoptable animals on Petfinder and advertise them regularly on social media.

Do you guys have any tips for advertising these guys, or is it just patience? It’s just so frustrating because these cats are awesome, but because they aren’t tiny and fluffy they get overlooked.

I’m also asking for me personally, because we have some new intakes I’m fostering, a 4 month old and 9 month old. I’m so anxious about the older cat especially not finding a home and how I can’t take on any new fosters while she’s here. I know the point of fostering is to provide them a safe home as long as they need, but I always think about how many others we can’t help until we place the ones we have.

Anyways, thanks for reading my question and mini vent! Any advice on promoting the kitties that people gravitate less toward would be so appreciated!

Just imagine being a cat in today's society.

This poor baby was wrapped up in barbed wire!

We are helping. She is going to the emergency vet to get sewed back up and probably will need to be on antibiotics as well.

If you'd like to help, we sure would appreciate it.

The sad thing is, I don't even post a lot of what we deal with on a daily basis. We see so much of this it just hurts.

I was telling a friend yesterday, without people like YOU (this community, meaning YOU).. I would have zero faith in humanity. You all literally make the world a better place and I am so thankful to be able to see the good and not just the bad.
