Fed up of Reddit? This is a subreddit for cataloging, dispersing, and sharing all reddit alternatives out there.

A subreddit for cataloging, dispersing and sharing all reddit alternatives out there.

Miss the old reddit? Yearn for how it "used to be" or just want something different? No matter the reason, this is the subreddit for you.

Rules

  1. If you are submitting an alternative, please include an intro or elevator pitch your headline. Add comments to the headline beyond the alternative's name or domain, such as what makes it unique, or its elevator pitch. Examples: "notabug - Reddit's frontend with a decentralized backend", "Announcing Opyn.io - a content and opinion aggregator"
  2. Do not post official updates, changes, or announcements for a reddit alternative if a previous update, change, or announcement was posted here for that same alternative in the last 30 days, or the alternative was first posted here less than 30 days ago, unless exceptional circumstances warrant it.
  3. Do not post support questions or issues, or "up or down" statuses (for example, "is Ruqqus down?") for reddit alternatives unless there are novel or extenuating circumstances.
  4. No curse words in submission titles.

I actually love the number of overlapping communities in Lemmy

On Reddit, I only have one or a few subreddits to post any given discussion or question on, and each community decides how to collectively receive my posts. Let's say its poorly received on 1 out of 2 subreddits I post it on, then I lose out on up to 50% of possible engagement on Reddit (assuming that both subreddits are the same size and as active).

With Lemmy & Kbin OTOH I can shoot my shots in many communities in only 1 min with Lemmy's crosspost button. If one or a few communities don't like my post, that's only a small portion, I've seen reeptions of posts vary a lot. For instnace, my post "What are your thoughts on Zen Browser becoming a lot more popular than Floorp?" has ~ -6 votes on firefox@lemmy.world but has ~94 votes on Linux@lemmy.ml. I often get a more total upvotes and comments for the same posts there than on Reddit.

Why is Reddit alternative either far left or far right ?

Either you are dealing some far left dipshits Bluesky, lemmy, or far right cesspool, twitter, where is the middle? Where are the creative people I used to see using the internet in 1990s?

The closest platform I have found is Hacker news, the problem is 99.99% of the user base autistic people.., HN is basically 4chan but everyone is wearing suits and there occupation is programming.

Hacker news is mainly dominated by white sheltered suburbanites, like Reddit used to be in 2009-11, the issue is that there is no diversity in thought, unless the articles caters to these demo, it won't be entertaining ur useful at all.

Why can't I find a forum where there are no left or right dipshits, has the simplistic layout of HN (no images,no videos) just text, and the entertainment and creativity of 4chan ?

Kiwifarms, that website led by an autistic neck beard named Null, came close fulfilling this criteria, the only issue is that the site users mainly is focused on internet celebrities which is not interesting at all.

I don't want to read how everything is phobic of some sort and a hug box, neither I want right wing CHUDs where everything that's wrong is because of (insert some sort kind of minority ), I just want to see the Wild West of the internet circa 1999-2003.

Where has the creativity and entertainment gone ? Am I going to be forced to go back to books now that the internet is in this sorry state ?

Or offline clubs, maybe that's better.

Why is Lemmy federated?

It makes everything really confusing.

Website similar to reddit where we can post questions individually instead of being asked to use a sticky thread or gets removed for "low effort content"?

I first started liking reddit because i could make a post, have no kickback from mods and generate healthy discussion from its members. Nowadays, there are still some but it is getting increasingly difficult to find subs that don't have auto removal with 10+ vague rules, or mods simply don't like questions so they corral ALL questions into a sticky thread, or downright just do not allow discussion at all... I cannot in good faith follow this site anymore, except for specific subs more open minded and less strictly moderated. Is there a site out there that resembles the way reddit used to be, or those days are gone, on all sites?

So I just checked out Bluesky...

I just created an account on Bluesky and it's buggy af.

I keep getting messages about "the feed server" being offline.

Anyone else have this experience?

edit: O.k. it just occurred to me that if you don't follow anyone or join any feed there's nothing to show you...so, I think it's me. With that said a better message could be shown to the user.

What's Your Ideal Reddit Alternative?

Just curious. What are you actually looking for?

No Censorship, No Gods, No Masters, Productive Discussion

Expanding on my previous post, since it seems there was some misunderstanding—some people assumed I was proposing something like 4chan or 8chan. That’s definitely not what I’m aiming for.

What I’m actually envisioning is more like a modern take on Usenet, scaled to fit today’s internet but grounded in the philosophy of anarchism.

The core idea is based on the belief that we don’t need rulers or centralized authorities to maintain order. Instead, the system would rely on principles like tribalism and direct democracy to organize and govern itself.

The concept is a decentralized, text-only platform where everything is shaped through systemic direct democratic processes. In theory, this could foster on-topic, productive discussions while avoiding centralized censorship or heavy-handed moderation.

The ultimate goal is to create a space where discussion can flourish organically, with order emerging from the community itself rather than being imposed from the top down.

That said, I’m curious to hear your thoughts:

  • How could challenges like disorder or mob rule be addressed?

  • Would this kind of platform appeal to you?

  • P2P, fediverse, or alternatives?

  • Any ideas on how it could work in practice or ways to refine the concept?

Looking forward to hearing your input!

The Ideal Redditor - precursor to a proper Reddit alternative.

What would your ideal Reddit user look like? They would of course support free speech and be liberal. But what are some other, more obscure opinions they could have on certain topics? For example, how would they feel about deepfakes and the singularity, as well as eugenics, and semantics about racism. Or about pornography or piracy? What are some opinions that you wish to see in a fellow Reddit or Reddit alternative user? Controversial and pragmatic opinions of a freethinker that you would wish to see more often. Personal opinions and subjective things as well as objective reasonings.

I have an idea for a social media platform

Imagine a social media platform where you can completely block names and topics.

For example I don’t want to see anything that mentions Elon or Trump

Anything that mentions their name will be blocked in my feed.

Or maybe you have a seperate block feed

I am sure this could be easily implemented and huge selling point for people who want to take a break from the constant noise and firehose of info

I built an app for myself that replaced 80% of my Reddit usage

It's super simple—I just set up in the app what kind of posts I want and how often I want to receive them. Then, the best ones are sent straight to my email, like once a week or once a month, depending on the subreddit.

For me, it's a great alternative to directly using Reddit and endlessly scrolling through it.

If you'd like to check it out: subsDigest.app. It's free for moderate usage.

Is it possible to make an “OG” Reddit clone, and get the current Reddit user base to migrate to it?

Basically like what’s happening with BlueSky and Xitter. I know that Elon/the election have been a huge catalyst for what looks like the beginnings of a mass exodus, but do you think that could ever happen with Reddit?

Like I know there are a lot of alternatives that try to improve on the form and make it more resilient to what happened to Reddit in the first place, but is there an app that is trying to just be what Reddit was a decade or so ago?

nsfw reddit alternatives for chatting and roleplay?

Not just sharing random nsfw pictures on boards , but with the possibility of chatting with people ( like alternatives to r/exxxchange or r/dirtyr4r )

Social networks alternative for async text discussions

I have nothing against Reddit, I only used it for couple of months. I think it’s a descent social network.

But it has some problems of Big Social I tied to outline and analyze here

https://thecloudtimes.substack.com/p/taking-back-control-of-conversations

I’m looking into alternative for group communication in a form of a real naive and rather simple solution: mailing group.

It’s not even a classical mailing list, just a group managed by Google.

I hope this can work for me personally and some other people who tired of scrolling and algo feeds.

Let me know if you ever tried anything like this, if you think email is dead or any ideas where else to look for alternative async platform designed for slow communication

What’s the best alternative for discussions about games, franchises, movies etc

So I made my account to have discussions and find community’s to talk games, moves, music etc that i love.however, I’m getting increasingly fed up with this app and its over politicization, toxicity and features that barely work. I do appreciate the subreddit-style design with different communities for different topics. What are the best alternatives to discuss my passions with the politics or toxicity?

[self promo] And we're live!

Back in January 2023, I started playing around with Swift UI. After a month or so, I had the basics of an app working.

Around that time, both Twitter and Reddit were going through a rough patch and I figured why not try building my own social media app.

Well, nearly two years later, my app is now finally live: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/appt-social/id6737576087

I've tried to combine the spontaneity & flow of Twitter and the robust & community-driven approach of Reddit, and arguably ended up with the worst aspects of both.

If you're interested in an app with 0 users, 0 revenue, 0 community, 0 potential, then come say hi!

^(ps currently limited to uk only so also 0% chance of US politics chat)

Are there any alternatives to reddit that aren't overly left wing but a good mix of both left and right wing?

I think reddit is now pretty left wing. I am looking for old reddit before the right wingers were kicked out, but not a right wing monoculture.
