Discussion on electric and nitro helis, their control systems, and flying.
/r/RCHeli
Thanks to everybody who helped answer my questions a few days ago; I've decided to build a Goosky RS4 Venom as my first "real" helicopter. My tentative build list is below; I would appreciate any feedback or critiques if I've missed anything or something doesn't look right.
Hi folks! I built my goosky RS7, and am beginning the setup process. I have built machines, but they've all been Blade helis over the past 7 to 8 years(I think), and I never touched my 2 Ikons for updates, etc..
Anyhow, I'm a bit intimidated, which is a shock(even to myself), as I've built, flown, and enjoyed so many models over the decades.. My wife just laughs at me(not in a mean way), and is like "man, you don't fly any of your models anymore, so why do you keep buying these big assed things... It's like you look for the biggest thing you thing you can fit in your truck".. Lol, why she's not wrong at all.. I do more working(at my job) and sleeping than anything. But.. As strange as it sounds, I still enjoy building the larger sized models, "from a bunch of bags of bolts".. That's the background to my little story..
But back to my current issue: I have gone through the initial 2 tabs on the Ikons interface(where you specify your basic setup), and I got past the binding page(yes, I'm a Spectrum guy, after being a Futaba guy, who was an Airtronics guy after being a JR guy, after intially being a Futaba guy), and I'm just getting to the point of seeing the 90 degree neutral of the cyclic servos.
But for some of reason I'm very hesitant. I definately want to get this project off the dining room table, but after firing the machine up (after starting the kit a day earlier), without blades, and struggling to get the motor to spin(with the throttle curve on a flat), I was a little(actually allot) tired and frustrated last weekend.. I don't know what it was to be honest, as it was the strangest feeling..
Just wondering has anyone else experienced this? Like I had to buy a new motor (scorpion), ESC (HW 260 amp), and new charger( Hitec RSW4), and 705 blades, that I hadn't planned on.. I'm kind of wondering if it was these upgrades, that took some of the breath out of my "new heli project"..
I am not sure, but I know I was just like "I'm not feeling this setup process right now, and I want to rest" last weekend(Sunday night).. And this will be my first opportunity to work on it since.
But I'm very hesitant, and feel like resting. But at the same time, I want to finish it...
Anyone experienced these feelings or conflicts of interests?
I’m joining my local airfield club, since they allow airplanes and helicopters. And it seems like a perfect place for me to upgrade to a larger helicopter. But after talking with the club officers, they said 99% of people there fly airplanes. I’ve never flown a helicopter at an official rc airfield, so I don’t know how my flying a rc helicopter while other rc airplanes are in the air may impact those flying airplanes. Will my general low-altitude flight and acrobatics likely annoy the other members? What is your experience? I want to enjoy my hobby with out angering or annoying others in the airfield. Thank you!
I have a DX6i (Dsmx) with which I started my indoor flying hobby with foam planes. I want to try rc helis, and I am wondering If the current Blade bnf helis work well with this transmitter. I dont want to spend a ton and rather re-use my equipment. For the moment. I'm sort of keen on Helis like
Do these helis work well with the old transmitter?
I want to build cheap Trex 450 clone flybarless but I ordered TGZ without any investigation. So any advice, which one is better, easier to setup?
Hello! I want to use this radio for simulation on PC. Someone know the pinout of that "jack port"? I don't wanna buy the cable, but do it by myself (maybe with rs232 ftdi, if possible). What i know from inside of it, is that have 3 pins:
1 >gnd
2 >01A (resistor) > P0.4 main controller
3 >01A (resistor) > P0.5 main controller
Main Chip is C8051F310
I have a somewhat older 350(maybe 450) trex clone rc heli. When I initially got it, I was unable to successfully takeoff. After spooling up, it would tip and the blades destroyed.
I have no idea what I am doing. Can anyone help point me to step by step guide online or other source of information?
First of all I'd like to say thank you for the mods for this awesome sub.
In the middle of last week I looked up and saw a helicopter. I have a huge load of lego technic and my BuWizz 3.0 hub just arrived with 2 motors, so I got inspired. Everything else must be genuine lego parts and it has introduced some difficulties. I want to make it as lightweight as possible while avoiding overcomplicating it. I have built the main mechanisms for it: a twin rotor setup with gimbal (?) capabilities and control surface with a servo motor for yaw input. The main rotors are driven by two strong motors (linked together by a differential, so I can spin the rotors up with one motor while the otherone acts as a clutch until needed). I'll need another servo for the gimbal. The two sets of rotors are connected together and reversed by gears, so their rpm always match, thus I don't need the tail rotor (would be really hard to sync it to the main rotor). This is what you might be able to see in the video.
I don't want more than 3 motors inside because of their weight so I already have a few other concepts in my head. My question is: DO I NEED ROLL CONTROLS? I mean I will have pitch (shifting the heavy controll unit back and forth) and yaw, so I could make a 90 turn then pitch instead of rolling. Is roll controll unavoidable?
Hello, usually I am an RC plane guy, but today I come to the heli ppl with what some ppl have been calling vintage tech.
I recently got a walkera 4F200LM, and while I was getting it dialled in a slightly rough landing shredded the PTO cone gear for the tail rotor
Unfortunately this heli has been out of production for some time so spare parts are not really available anymore.
I was wondering if anyone here had any ideas. I was thinking about trying to reverse engineer the gear. I know that they are standardised enough that there may be a similar one out there that can be slotted in (with the utmost care and modification) or perhapse one can be made/modified (with the utmost care and modification²)
Any suggestions are appreciated!
I have been flying the Blade 230S for a while and I'm looking at getting a larger and higher-quality helicopter. I've been looking at the SAB 420 comp and the OMP M4, so I'm looking for advice/recommendations on which route to go (or another heli that I haven't thought about yet).
As of now here are my rough options:
420 comp kit (w/ blades), Xnova 3215-930KV motor, Hobbywing 80A ESC, Spektrum 6350HX FBL, Torq CL0508 cyclic servos, not sure about tail servo. - $1100 USD
OMP M4 PNP kit (w/blades, motor, servos, ESC), Spektrum 6350HX FBL. - $750 USD
I already have a Spektrum NX8 that I've been flying with the 230 and other aircraft.
Obviously the SAB option is way more expensive, but I assume at least some of that cost goes into the high quality that I've heard about. Is the extra cost worth performance gains? I'd consider myself a competent pilot, but by no means highly skilled so I definitely want something that's going to help me learn and not be too difficult to fly at first. Any advice or critiques would be welcome.
I just purchased my first Micro Heli from Blade, its the Revolution 90 fixed Pitch. I am aware that its a fairly basic heli and I know I may outgrow it soon. But given the price point for the RTF, I am ready to test the water and see if heli hobby is for me. Just to mentally chart a course for the 'next investment' whats a better second collective Pitch heli? I would prefer it being somewhat smaller before I bump to larger 300-400 sizes.
Any recommendation?
I've built tons of machines over the decades, but this one, just has been downright "fun*to build! The quality of the materials was extremely high also!
Let me preface by saying that the hobby is VERY different now than it was in the mid-2000s. There were VERY few options for smaller helis, and the ones that were available flew like absolute shit. There were no helis that flew like OMP M2s back then. Simulators were around, but they had just started popping up.
My dad bought me a Blade CX for Christmas one year, and I immediately crashed it. I eventually got the hang of it with training gear, but it was a frustrating process to say the least. I eventually moved up to a Blade CP, and that thing was absolute garbage. It was so freaking unstable that it was damn near impossible for me to keep in the air. I worked on my simulator, and I eventually got the hang of flying it, but I never felt confident on it.
Looking back, it was a mistake to try to keep flying that Blade CP. I really needed to move up to a TREX-450 as soon as I could hover in all orientations and fly figure 8's. I needed something was had a modicum of stability in the air so I could actually feel confident flying. I understand that smaller helis are a lot better now, but that was absolutely not the case 15-20 years back.
I remember talking with an older guy at the hobby shop years back, and he pointed at the Blade CP Pro that was on the shelf and said, "God, I hated that thing! It was so freaking unstable." To this day, that conversation has stuck in my mind because I had a similarly frustrating experience.
Like I've seen stated here, once a new user starts gets their confidence up on a simulator, my recommendation is to move to an OMP M2, gain a little more confidence, then move to the biggest heli they can afford to crash. There's just something satisfying about flying the larger birds.
Edit: Another thing that would have been important would have been to join a local flying club so I could talk to and get mentorship from some of the more experienced heli guys. Navigating the RC heli world as a young kid was not easy for me, and I think I would have had a much better chance at success had I been able to interface with some more experienced local guys.
I couldn’t find that specification online
Hi, just picked up a goosky s1, flew it once and I’ve realized I’m not as good as I remember being when I was a kid, so I want to practice in a simulator.
Is there a way to connect a t8 to a sim?
I’m excited to get back in to the hobby :)
Thank you <3
Is it as safe as toys ? I am looking for a cp heli that i can use inside and that is as safe as a toy...
Is it a good choice ? Do you have anything better to propose ?
I just got a nano s3 and am learning just to hover on stability mode to start. I haven't crashed it but after a few runs it won't lift off unless almost full throttle and it wants to move bad when it does lift. I tried to calibrate but it says not to touch the stick touch and I still have to really move them to even begging to hover. Any ideas?
Has anyone purchased from RCGoing? What was the experience like?
I posted these on facebook and offerup. These have top of the line electronics and are for sale. If youd like a video call to see components, im in san diego CA.
I started in RC helis back in 2005 or so with a Blade CX. I moved to a Blade CP, then a CP Pro. It was really rough learning with those helis since I didn't know to start with a simulator.
I eventually got to the point where I could fly pretty comfortably in the simulator. I could fly in all of the upright orientations, and I could do CW and CCW figure-8s. As a kid, I didn't have the money to replace my crashed helis, so I kept flying on the simulator. I eventually moved to quads and RC planes, as I started to feel that RC helis were losing in popularity to the much more stable FPV quads.
I'm starting to get interested in RC Helis again. I just don't know what class of RC heli it would be good to start out with again. I remember being told on a forum that a lot of beginners would be better served by a larger and more stable heli. A guy even told me that he thought that a 550 size electric was even preferable to a 450 due to a large increase in stability for a small increase in marginal cost. I remember telling a guy at a local hobby shop that I flew a Blade CP back in the day, and he was like, "God, I hated that thing. It was so freaking unstable!" My experience mirrored his frustration.
What would y'all's recommendations be? Should I get a cheaper trainer heli, or should I look at something larger like a SAB Goblin RAW 580?
Edit: It looks like the OMP M2 and the Goosky S1 and S2 are what are being recommended.
I just got an S3 nano RTR and noticed the throttle is on the right in stability mode and left in 3d. Is that normal? I always had throttle on right before.
Hi, so i got my new S1 yesterday and have about 7 batteries into it and then a problem just popped up this last battery.
It seems to lose it's forward pitch, no matter how much forward I give it, I crashed it 4 times after that trying to see if I could figure out what's going on. It seems to take off normal, I can be hovering then it just kind of looses all forward capability so I cut the motor.
I got the RTF model so I'm using the Goosky controller, have not modified any sesettings and have all my switches going away from me so I should be in easy mode.
I'm sorry. I'm pretty new back into the hobby again and there are not a while lot of resources where I live. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I want to start flying rc helicopters and I've been looking at the xk k110s and the blade revolution 90 fp. I really only want to fly indoors because I don't have much time to spend on this and I want to get the most flying time. They're both around the same price, but I don't know if starting with a fixed pitch heli will limit me later when I want to start flying collective pitch. If you guys have any other recommendations for a first rc heli in a similar price bracket, lmk. Thanks!
Both my uncle I have a M2 V2 with Spektrum radios, he has an IX14 and I have an NX8 and we are both having the same dual rate problem. If you push and hold the right stick up, down or left and then flip dual rates on and off, you can see the different servo travel positions. If you push the stick right and flip the switch you get no movement. I can't find any info anywhere and it's weird that it's happening on two different radios.
Hello I just got into rc helicopters. I know nothing lol I wanna learn, I bought a bunch from a coworker. He said they might or might not work since they are old, it was dirt cheap so I said I'll take it. I'm trying to identify this one, I know the brand is yiboo, it has no remote just the chopper. It has power and I bought the only other yiboo remote I can find and it won't seem to work I can't find any stamp for a model number or anything.
I'm looking for suggestions as to what sound systems are available for a 450 size UH-1 Iroquois.
Thanks.
