WTF is up with Raleigh weather prediction services?

Seems like they can never accurately predict an incoming rainstorm, only that it’ll eventually go away. Sheesh.

Weekend Getaway

Hello! I am looking to plan a nice weekend get away within a 3.5 hour radius.

I'm looking to do a weekend getaway here in about 3 months. I'd like to stay somewhere between 2-4 hours away. I want to stay away from beaches, any place you'd want warm weather for, etc.

We are looking to maybe find a place to go skiing/ in the mountains OR a place that has CUTE little towns/ boutiques to explore. We also like hiking and being outdoors.

Does anyone have any advice?

Septic Size for 4 bedroom

Buying a new construction in Smithfield, NC. The house is a 4-bedroom but the septic is 1000 gallons. Initially I was told it would be 1200 gallons. I am now concerned if I sell the home in the future that I would have to list it as a 3-bedroom. Is that correct? Who would I need to call to confirm or ask questions about it? The county? Thanks

Best OBGYN for pregnancy in North Raleigh/WF area?

Currently go to Kamm, but after seeing a lot of mixed reviews about their doctors as it relates to experiences while pregnant, I am thinking I might want to change. I am looking for a doctor that really knows her stuff (ideally female -- have always had better experience with female docs) and is super up to date on the latest trainings and info, not just a pill pusher or someone who does the standard tests and be out of the room in 5 minutes. I want my doctor to take the time to do the tests and things that are best for me and my baby. Ideally someone who also incorporates integrated medicine practices alongside traditional medicine (allows you to do Fresh test vs regular glucose test for example). Bonus points if they are aligned to Wakemed North.

Also please share your experiences if you have any good or bad with local hospitals in the Raleigh/North Raleigh area.

Doula and midwife reccos also appreciated! Thank you!

Give yourself credit

Hey everyone, Steve here. I’ve been part of Reddit Raleigh since its early days, and for all the newcomers, “Avoid the Olive Garden” is kind of an inside joke. But on a more serious note, I wanted to share a few words of encouragement. We handle a lot of corporate work around the area, and one thing I’ve noticed is that people don’t give themselves enough credit. There are so many individuals doing great and important things for our community, yet most remain humble about it. So here’s my message: take a moment to acknowledge yourself. Whether you’re a parent, student, teacher, administrator, or worker—whatever your role—give yourself a pat on the back. You deserve it. Be proud of what you do. No matter how small you think your role is, you are important. Even something like fighting traffic and staying calm is a big accomplishment. And remember to give yourself a break—I promise you’re doing way better than you think you are.

First Friday question

I have an artistic friend that will be in town for this coming first Friday. They’re here doing some work at a local shop but do street painting sometimes in their home city. Does anyone know if it’s allowed to set up somewhere down town with a little table to live paint/potentially sell during first Friday? I haven’t been since before COVID and I seem to remember people doing this, but I’m not sure if that is something you need to get a permit for or if it’s otherwise frowned upon. Thank you!

Make your own Coffee Place

Looking for a breakfast or coffee place that lets you make your own iced coffee. Where I use to live there was a bagel shop that would give you a cup with coffee ice cubes and then has a coffee station with creamers, syrups, milk and all different coffee brews. Wondering if there is a place like that in Raleigh where they have a make your own coffee station and have lots of options on how to customize it?

pullen park shelter rental—worth it?

hey y’all! i have a super niche question. i’m having a birthday celebration in pullen park (around 20ish attendees, all adults, not super big). the celebration is a picnic type of party where i’m going to have activities like crafts and lawn games.

i was looking into getting a shelter to have some table space for games and crafts.

wanted to know if anyone in here thought it was worth it? i know its first come first serve, but the reservation block is only for 3-6pm (no option to adjust as far as i know) and that’s not the timeframe i need (looking for 1:30-4pm). also, for a small party like mine, i don’t really need space for 100 people.

i also wanted one of the shelters that had a lot of grassy spots for people to bask in the sun and touch some grass.

main question is does it make sense for me to reserve? are the shelters in high demand or could i potentially use a shelter without reserving (obviously assuming a risk).

if anyone in here has any other ideas for a cheap venue in some sort of outdoor space with easy access to tables, let me know.

Rent a Quality Carbon Road Bike

I am visiting Raleigh from Toronto for a conference this weekend and was wondering if there are bike shops renting quality road bikes. It doesn't have to be super high end, any bike with carbon frame (either disc or rim is fine) with 11/12 Shimano would be good. Thanks

Best place to find used tools?

I’ve checked out the Salvation Army stores, but typically what they have is just ancient stuff. I’m looking to pick up all the basic wood working tools (circular saw, palm sander, big clamps, etc.) and wondering if y’all have a particular place that tends to have these regularly.

Another food recommendation post: Lumpia.

Long story short: I'm craving Lumpia and seeking your recommendations.

Long story long. I'm having a difficult time coping with the recent and very unexpected loss of my dog. With the rain and gloomy weather I kinda just want to lay in bed all day today, put on my sad playlist (which is really just Sam Cooke), and eat my body weight in comfort food.

I was laying here going through my memories and trying to figure out what food would bring me the most comfort and then my time in the miliary came to mind. About 6 months after getting stationed at Fort Cavazos (Fort Hood) one of our sister battalions got a new soldier, an older Filipina woman who we come to call Mama Souza. Mama Souza and her family basically adopted me and my buddy and we probably spent more time at their house than in the barracks. Their children were like siblings to us, they had us over for holidays and celebrations and regular ass Wednesday evenings for dinner, they picked our drunk asses up more than a few times, and were just wonderful people to have in your corner.

But my most memorable time with this family was after deployment. Shortly after deployment we had a random four day and I was feeling really sad and depressed that week. This was long before I admitted to myself that something was wrong with me, so long before I began mental health treatment and learned positive coping mechanisms. We had a rare brigade formation and Mama Souza approached me after we were released. I can't remember her exact words but she told me I looked sad and ordered me to pack enough clothes to stay with them over the 4 day. The next 4 days were probably some of the most memorable days of my entire life and the focal point, aside from the overwhelming love and support they showed me, was the basically unlimited homemade Lumpia. It wasn't the first time she made Lumpia for me, in fact she would sometimes show up at our barracks before PT to give us a huge container full of it. But something about the Lumpia that 4 day weekend just slapped so differently.

I don't think any Lumpia will ever beat Mama Souzas Lumpia because I know it always came from a place of love and care, but I'm willing to give my dollars to anyone who can come close to hers.

Best bars in Raleigh (and Triangle area?)

I’ve been to a few on Glenwood, my favorite is Tin Roof but the vibes in most of them are so college that I can only bring myself to stay for an hour or two. Looking for a cool place to go where I can actually talk and move around, but that has good drinks and good vibes.

best italian food in the area

I’m looking for the best Italian restaurant in the area! I’m from New England and I just haven’t found any Italian restaurant that is nearly as good as the ones up there.

I particularly love penne alla vodka. If they have peroni on draft that’s also a huge plus.

Where to watch Bundesliga games

I have seen post about this before but they are a little outdated and didn’t really answer the question. Are there any places to watch Bundesliga games? Would London Bridge put it on?

Family owned thrift stores!

Hi everyone, I’m located in the Raleigh area but Raleigh is just….. Raleigh. And I’m looking to travel around (preferably in a 3 hour range) to find some good local/family owned thrift stores that I can stop in at and check out. I am against gatekeeping but I promise I will not tell everyone about your awesome thrift stores (if you’re trying to save all the good finds for yourself haha) I’d really appreciate some suggestions, like give me the junkiest and crazy thrift store you know. The less curated and picked through the better! Feel free to comment or message !!

Morrisville dog training

We have a 2 year old Great Pyrenees named ducky. She has high anxiety and is reactive to people and other dogs. We are looking for a place that with help her build her confidence. We singed up for sit means sit but quickly backed out before she went after reading different review. We are looking for a place that uses positive reinforcement to improve her confidence rather than breaking her down. With our bad experience with sit means sit we are trying to do our research but now have 0 trust with training centers. We definitely need help, we are feeling pretty lost in this situation. Please please please help us build up our pups trust with us and our trust with training facilities we need recommendations!

WPU

hi folks, I just got my acceptance letter to William peace, was wondering if there are any current students of any discipline (especially the simulation and game design track) and if there’s anything you can tell me about the school? Do you like it? Is it relatively safe? How is it socially? Plus any thoughts you have about it. The campus, the professors, the utilities, etc. thanks!!

Edit: I’ll note that I’m not from the area and don’t know much about it. Also, how’s the public transport??
