Motorcycle/Bike

Anyone ride motorcycles in the Raleigh area? If so, how do you feel about it? I don't see many riders (very seldomly) and was wondering if there is a reason why. Looking to start this year, but maybe this city isn't the appropriate place.

Weird request: list of every pizza place in Raleigh?

My husband's New Year's Resolution is to eat from every pizza place in Raleigh. Does anyone happen to have a list of every pizza place in Raleigh?

Some rules we came up with for simplicity:

1- Gotta be in Raleigh. Outside is extra credit but it needed to be limited.

2- Big national chains don't count, and if they get on the list, one location counts for the whole chain. (So he doesn't need to go to every Papa John's in the city!)

I figured if anyone might have assembled this list, it would be one of y'all! Also, I would of course accept any variation on the theme- I'm happy to take some macrodata and refine it. :P

And, yes, we're making a spreadsheet with our data and are intending to post our opinions here if y'all are interested. :) We loved what the steakhouse person did (but I don't know that we will be as through as they were!)

Thanks, y'all!

Protests

What’s the best way to keep up with when there’s going to be protests? I can’t make it to the Wednesday one and just googling “protests Raleigh nc” doesn’t even bring up the one for this week

Groundhog Day 2025

Did anyone else go to see Snerd's Groundhog Day prediction over in Garner today? I was there and could swear the verdict was early spring. Is that also what you heard? Weirdly, online sources are saying 6 more weeks of winter from Snerd (as well as Punxsutawney Phil, who did say that). But you know, this ain't Pennsylvania and it would make sense for our weather prognostications to vary. Starting to wonder if it is all an AI conspiracy to undermine our local talent 🙃

Lake Crabtree meeting 2/3/25 at 5PM

Received an email from RDU Forest regarding a meeting tomorrow night at 5 for public comments. I apologize for the formatting, just copied/pasted.

Public Comment on Plans to Develop Lake Crabtree County Park 136 acres of forested trails Monday, February 3, 2025 (5pm)

Wake County Justice Center 2nd floor 300 S Salisbury St Raleigh, NC 27601 Parking: Wake County Municipal Deck corner of W. Davie and S. McDowell St Get free parking - bring parking stub to be validated before meeting starts

We hope you will give public comments - up to 3 minutes each (or attend to show support) at Monday, February 3 Wake County Commissioners meeting to save the 136 forested acres of singletrack /ped trails at Lake Crabtree County Park. Wake County Commissioners meeting starts 5pm. Public Comments will likely start at 5:30pm. You can sign up to speak after 9am at: https://boccomment.wake.gov or in sign-up sheet before meeting starts. Also before the meeting starts, you can get your parking slip validated (for free parking) if you park in the Wake County Municipal Deck).

Unlike the RDUAA meeting last week, there is plenty of parking and seats in the Commissioners Chamber (and if there is an overflow, the staff accommodates in an adjacent conference room).

Thank you for helping protect our amazing community park!

There’s more background and discussion on the RDU Forest Community Group

Here’s our take on the importance of Lake Crabtree County Park

Decades of public planning and investment have made the Lake Crabtree / Old Reedy Creek / Umstead recreation district the most used, most accessible, most centrally located forested recreation area in the Triangle. These public investments have paid off - the forested trails at Lake Crabtree County Park are heavily used by the mountain biking, trail running, and hiking communities - providing much needed health benefits close by.

We recognize that RDU needs funds to support airport infrastructure and their Vision 2040 plan. Those plans should build upon the success of the Lake Crabtree forested trails - not develop and destroy them. This recreation district is a unique, irreplaceable asset that supports quality of life in the fast growing Triangle region. The forested trails in Lake Crabtree Park are heavily used today, and those recreational demands will only increase.

We encourage local governments to find a solution that both preserves the forested trail system in Lake Crabtree Park and strengthens RDU. Our growing region needs both forested outdoor recreation AND a strong airport. It’s unfortunate that RDU’s LCCP lease plan has unnecessarily placed those goals in conflict. Instead, we encourage RDU to monetize other land they control in ways that complement existing recreational assets instead of harming them. We’re not the only ones suggesting this. As part of accepting federal funds, the FAA grants obligate RDU plans to be “reasonably consistent with public agencies … of the area surrounding the airport”. The 2020 RTA AID report suggested similar - “RDU has the responsibility to leverage its property for compatible and complementary uses”. That RTA report went so far as to suggest that RDU “Hire a master developer to review the entire airport for strategic development opportunities”. Instead of destroying LCCP for marginal revenue gains, develop a plan that leverages the existing park by monetizing other nearby lands controlled by RDU.

RDU’s claimed goal of developing the 136 acres in a way “compatible with the park” is simply unrealistic. Those 136 acres represent about 3/4 of the forested land of the park. What is a forested park without the forest and trails?

Destroying this asset is an affront to decades of public planning and investment in the recreational value of this area. To name just a few public projects: Cary’s Black Creek Greenway and Old Reedy Creek trail access and parking, Morrisville Crabtree Creek greenway, Umstead State Park and connecting Raleigh Greenways, East Coast Greenway, the planned Triangle Bikeway along the I-40 corridor, and Lake Crabtree Park.

Those public investments have succeeded. Lake Crabtree Park is arguably the most used, most effective, most accessible park in the county. Let’s not destroy it when other options exist.

Caution on Wednesday

Just got a message from Bull City Indivisible warning that the Wednesday protests may be a set up for martial law. Nobody knows who organized these protests because at present they have remained anonymous. There is concern that the organizers are right wing and in association with the current regime with the intent of creating civil unrest as a pretext for martial law. This is not unheard of and was a tactic used in Germany leading up to the Second World War to oppress the people. Go out, make your voice heard. Make sure they know: WE. AREN’T. GOING. ANYWHERE!

Niche question: printers for specific style of book

Fanbook/doujinshi printing specifically. I know RDU area as the host for Animazement has got to have some nerds who have printed something like this before. Working on an anthology and I need to get some test printing done before I put it up for sale later this year. I also am willing to try printers in the GSO area if you know any place there. If no options available here that you know of, then send me internet recs you absolutely trust. Thanks in advance! 🫶

Looking for cool clubs/music

My wife and I are new to Raleigh as of December. Any places to meet up/socialize for younger Gen X-ers?

Any good clubs with EDM/Trance style music around? My wife is more country only though and doesn’t like my bass and the drop attraction. so I may have to try out some solo.

Thanks.

NCAA Tournament Visit

Hi everyone! Planning to visit for the 1st and 2nd rounds of the NCAA tournament in March. I’ve heard good things about visiting your city and can’t wait!

Trying to do some research on a place to stay, and had a few questions, figured I’d start with the experts.

• I see Lenovo Center seems to be a bit west of city center. I don’t mind ubering from an entertainment district or something similar to the arena. I’m more interested in staying near all of your good food and bars/breweries. Any insight here?

• With that said, must see spots? Can be a hole in the wall, just here for a good time, I take this trip every year.

• Overall tips to make the trip more enjoyable?

Appreciate it ahead of time!

Talking points…

Does anyone have a copy of talking points that can be used when contacting our representatives? I thought I saw some but can’t find them now. I can’t always articulate what I’d like to say, so it would be helpful for me as I start calling/emailing tomorrow.

Thanks!

DFW to Raleigh Comparison

Hello! My husband and I are looking at making the move to Raleigh from north DFW suburbs and feeling lost on how to identify what part of town will be best for us… we’ve been in the frisco/allen/mckinney area for 4 years. Ive read that the closest comparison may be Cary/Apex? Any differing opinions? For anyone that has lived in both cities how would you compare the suburbs?

Part-Time Job Shortage

A few years ago my local Harris Teeter, Chic Fil A, wendys, etc had plenty of part-time job openings. Now, Glassdoor and Indeed only show availabilities for a few restaurants 20+ miles away from where I live.

Is there a non-political explanation why Harris Teeter and other franchises are not hiring part-time?

Sober-ish February (my January was a bust)

Looking for locations where I can enjoy a THC beverage while my hubby has a beer. It doesn’t have to be on tap.

Do any of the Boxcar locations have bevvies available?

I know I can buy cans of beverages in multiple RTP locations- but restaurants/breweries tend to frown when you bring your own in (kidding, I wouldn’t do that).

Hit me with your favorite spots to grab an infused brew that I can enjoy while hanging out with the family.

Thanks in advance!

Does AT&T Pro-Rate for services cancelled?

I have an AT&T fiber account that I'm looking to cancel and I was wondering if AT&T pro-rated the amount I don't use? I looked around online and got a grab bag of answers, most of which were from over a year ago so I'm not sure how up-to-date they are. The most recent mentioned that they stopped doing so, so basically if I cancel I'm not gonna get any money back.

Just seeing if anyone in the area knew for certain though or had recent experience.
