Subdivisions of November and Folk Customs

There are Ripdong (the opening of winter) and Sosol (the light snowfall) in November.

Ripdong means the opening of winter as the 19th of the 24 seasonal divisions according to the lunar calendar that falls on the 7th-8th of November and Sosol means the light snowfall as the 20th of the 24 seasonal divisions according to the lunar calendar that falls on the 22nd-23rd of November.

Since early times, in the season our people have pickled vegetables (kimchi) and steamed soybeans for making soybean paste.

From ancient times, our people have given importance to making kimchi and its making methods and tastes are different according to regional characters.

The people in the areas along the west coast put shrimps or croakers into kimchi and the people in the areas along the east coast put Myongthae (walleye Pollack) into kimchi.

Folk games in the season were Yut-game, Paduk (go), Korean chess, etc. and children enjoyed kite-flying, shuttlecock game and others.
