Hi all, I'm a reporter from France and I'm working on a piece on people living in their cars in California for whatever reason (financial, personal etc). Would anyone currently living in their car and working be willing to speak with me for some research for the project? Many thanks,
Juliette
Can you really sleep with the ac or the eat with no mayor issues every night?
The car get broke or damage because running at night?
The 2012 version is too old for that?
What I need to focus more before buy it?
Thanks guys
I just got this car and plan to live in it full time in the coming months with climate control, I just realized though that unlike the US models where you can switch all exterior lights to "off", I only have 3 options: headlights, parking lights and "auto" which decides either headlights or parking lights for you, no off option. This is a problem if I am going to be sleeping in this thing , it's not really going to be stealthy if the lights are on all night and also wears out the bulbs faster. This is apperently a safety feature due to local laws but haven't found a clear fix for this, I think I will have to modify the car in some way but I don't know how. Has anyone found a solution to this? Any help would be appreciated.
Not sure if I should accept or keep looking, any input is welcome! :)
Looking to get a new Prius soon and use it for traveling and sleeping in it maybe a few months out of the year. Main question is can I use the EV charge to run A/C overnight? My commute is kinda far so wouldn’t get much use out of the EV miles.
Would love to add a roof rack to my 2015 Prius V. Any recommendations? Anything out there that’s easy/affordable but still good quality?
Hello. My Gen4 prime (non-US) headlights are always on when dark. No toggle or button to turn off. Starting ready mode with e-brake activated does not turn them off when dark (only turned off DRLs in daylight). Would like to have car in ready mode with all exterior lights off. Wondering where is location of sensor, tried that little sphere on top of dash with a flashlight but did not work. Plan is to fool sensor with a light source but need to know where it is first - must be somewhere. Thanks :)
Hello. I am doing my research in consideration of buying a Prius in the desire to live in it full-time, so I want to see what model you have and I'd also like to ask, what year/gen do you see as being the most spacious and ideal for sleeping in? I am a somewhat average build man weighing around 160 pounds and standing at 6 feet tall.
The newer models seem nice, but I more like the idea of purchasing a pre-owned gen 3. I really want one that has the best trunk space so I can fold the rear seats down and lie flat comfortably.
New PriusDweller here what are the cheap upgrades that make Prius dwelling much more comfortable
I just started out on my first venture and ran into mice getting in. I am going to get the holes patched that they got into the cab when I get back to a city but I am out in a national park ATM. Going to work on cleaning the car and sealing food sources to limit smells. Also going to keep food away from the car for a bit in a bear bin. Is there anything I should spray on my tires? Peppermint oil? Liquid fence? Also going to park in a new spot so any local mice cannot go right back in.
No power in the house after Milton hit. Bearable at night but could get rough during the day. I have a 12v cigarette lighter inverter rated for 200w (230w max/500w peak).
Will it probably work if I plug two ~40w fans and a 65w charger (total about 145w) into the inverter through a surge protector/extension cord?
I've slept in a Prius before, but the climate was mild enough I didn't need A/C -- am I right in remembering that if I leave the engine running, it'll turn itself off and back on periodically to keep the battery from draining?
After great reluctance to potentially commodify and definitely publicize my life, I finally started a YouTube channel to document my Prius-dwelling journey. I uploaded a video yesterday touring my 2016 Prius V, which I’ve lived in full-time since 2020. The video is mid at best, LOL, but I’ve been having fun learning and doing it.
I hope you can take some ideas or practices away from my setup and use them on your own journey! This has been by far my favorite subreddit since I started using Reddit a few years ago, so I hope this gives back at least a little, as I’ve learned a LOT thanks to you guys.
Oh, and feel free to roast the absolute shit out of it (both the video and the car LOL). It would be doing me a huge favor, as constructive feedback has been challenging to come by ❤️
EDIT: I deleted the original thread from a few hours ago because it was showing an old thumbnail and I don’t think I did it right (I’ve never shared a YouTube video on Reddit before). Hopefully this is the way!
Which do you guys think might be better for my situation (look below for some information)?
Background:
Also open to suggestions on vehicles, I have a while to look around!
I got a 2012 Prius and I'm curious after reading some posts on this sub what gen my one is. I didn't buy my Prius with car-living in mind but I started considering this lifestyle the past few weeks and found out Prius' are ideal cars, lol.
Thanks.
the supreme court basically made it illegal to sleep in public, and now states and cities are scrambling to update their laws to reflect this.
unfortunately this is something that will effect us all. do we call it quits or just find ways around it? the potential of jail time for just sleeping in my car is ridiculous and something i really really want to avoid. last thing i want is to lose my job and have my car impounded because i was locked up for 30 days
When on climate control mode can I charge my IPhone pretty much unlimited?
Also can I play music all night or am I getting carried away with my energy usage
2015 Prius 4
Feel so much more comfortable in here. No mosquitoes, rain or people watching me sleep. Thanks to for the advice
Considering buying either one new. I like that both are hybrid systems so I can use the ready mode when it's very hot or cold outside. Both are available in AWD, the Prius gets better fuel economy but the Corolla cross has more space (and still great mpg for the size). The Corolla cross is actually cheaper by a few thousand fully loaded compared to the highest trim prois. I've sat in both and liked them, just having a hard time deciding which to go with. What are your thoughts between the two, and is there a reason the Corolla cross isn't brought up more in this sub (besides the fact it's Priusdwelling)?
I've been living in my car (2014 Ford Fiesta) for a month now. It's been pretty good but the main issues I'm facing is condensation and cold. I invested in a pretty expensive power station before I started because I'm going to be doing this for the long term and been using a heating blanket the whole night but still I feel a little cold (and It's not even winter yet) and also I like the idea of having the whole car hot, not just me, so now I'm faced with the decision to either continue with my ford since I've already invested in a delta 2 max power station and thus try to find a low wattage heater or if I should trade my ford in for a 2014 prius driven 74k miles and pay 3k inbetween so I can run ac all night, lower my gas costs and have more space. I'm also worried about stealth, running the ac all night means I will be cozy BUT the prius turns on every 10-15 minutes to charge, I'm worried that will alert people around in the neighbourhood and make it obvious that I am sleeping in the car?
Just purchased a 2009 Prius and I'm looking for input and/or pictures for phone mounts, added usb outlets or 12v sockets and maybe android auto/apple car play after market screens and placement that you've found to work best. I know this is kind of a personal preference thing but I think picture of what you all have already done may help me to make the right purchases from the start. Thank you!
•Car: Gen2 2006 •Inverter: Ridge Ryder 1000W pure sine wave •Power station: EcoFlow River 2 Max
The issue:
1.The EcoFlow can fast charge at 600W with DC input, and the inverter is 1000W. When I use the EcoFlow app to set the input power to 150W, charging works fine, but if it goes over 150W, the inverter stops for a second, then restarts, and this keeps happening. 2.The inverter has a low voltage protection feature, which kicks in when the battery voltage drops to 10.5V, cutting off the output and lighting up the LED. My car is in ‘ready’ mode, but after charging less than 10%, the alarm keeps going off.
Any ideas on what could be causing this?
Since I live in my car I’m crazy about keeping the interior clean. I basically detail my car every day…the dust seems to instantly return. If I go more than two days without cleaning/vacuuming it’s everywhere. Anyone have any tips?
Current routine is, wipe everything with microfiber cloth, vacuum, lint roller all the fabric/mattress. But the next day there’s dust again 😒
Hello my 2015 Prius has recently been making this noise constantly every minute. Before it used to only happen every now and again.
Anyone experience this before? Decaying battery/spark plugs?
Are there any kind of protection for windows? In my city it’s only a matter of time before someone sees my Prius dwelling stuff and smashes a window
Last night a bipping crew almost broke into my car. I got woken up by their flashlight checking my windows and they got spooked when they realized I was inside.
I would have triggered the car alarm from my keys but this doesn't work when the car is running. Anyone possibly have a workaround or suggestion?
I'm excited to try car camping with my old Prius this weekend. Weather is going to be hot and I would like to try the AC while I'm sleeping.
I understand how to get into READY mode (start button w/ brake on). I don't have to worry about safety and can leave windows down (with the privacy mesh screen on the windows).
I understand that the engine might kick on every 10-15 minutes or so.
I will sleep with my head closer to the front seats.
My concern is about the exhaust when the engine kicks on.
Do you experience dwellers worry about that?
