PSA - Big box warehouse Michelin X series tires at good prices

As you may know, the big box warehouses (Costco, Sams, etc) have sold the X-Tour line of Michelin tires. These are Michelin Defenders with a different sidewall stamp, and were typically sold for about $4-$10 less per tire than the Defenders.

Michelin no longer is producing the X line of tires, and the big box warehouses are buying (and primarily selling) the Defender line now. But, I found that Sam's Club (and potentially a Costco near you) have some older stock X-Tours at a significant discount.

Today I purchased four Michelin X-Tour A/S T&H tires in 195/65-15 for my Gen 4 from Sam's Club. Installed, out the door price with all taxes, etc. was $543. This included the $70 Michelin rebate which is effective through December 2024. When I checked Costco (Michelins were currently discounted $40 in this price range), the comparable Defender T&H tires were $675 all in. A savings of $132 for the X-Tours.

The date code on the tires I bought was 0924 (end of February 2024). Not a brand new production tire, but still new and stored indoors until sale.

Just got a 2015 Prius Three @80K miles. Preventative Maintenance I should keep in mind?

Just got a Prius Three and this thing is amazing, hoping to keep it as long as possible. I'm fairly handy and willing to do the mechanical work myself

Does using premium gas increase MPG for my gen 2?

Hi peeps, I own a gen 2 at around 115,000 mi right now, and I take very good care of my car average around 50 to 53 MPG on highway/city combined; However, I wanna refill my tank with premium gas once in awhile, does it make any differences?

Did my oil change need help (amateur hour)

I did my oil change myself, and found this gasket, I don't know if it's from the old oil filter and the new one just has one, or if I left this off somewhere important. Please don't tell me how dumb I am I'm feeling it.

Looking at a 2014 Prius 2 for 16,998 with 42000 miles

I'm new to hybrids but have had a lot of luck with Toyotas in general. This appears to be a one owner that has always been local and is now at a dealer. Anybody have thoughts on this year? Looking to possibly get it for my high school senior. I'm thinking she could drive it for quite a while. Thanks.

Worth repairing small dent in 2008 Prius?

I have a 2008 Prius, low mileage for its age (Under 110K). My question for the community is if it's worth shelling out at least $2,000 to repair a small but noticable dent in a lower panel or just sell it as is as everything else about the car is still going strong?

Thank you in advance!

My Midlife Crisis Car, a 2004 Prius, is on Its Last Legs

I got it in 2014, with about 80K on the clock, (and brand new NiMH batteries, which still work) and it now has ……… More than 299,999 miles on it.

It was my midlife crisis car, I was 52 at the time.

This may make me me the the dullest motherf%$#er on the face of the earth.

There were two flaws with the car, the driver, and the fact that it was like a red flag to a bull for other bad drivers.

I am looking for another Prius, but I will miss my white jellybean.

My 2002 Prius is dying so I did the only logical thing.

I bought a 2003 Prius!!

Old guy in the back, at 273k miles, rusted pretty bad, several engine codes, had it for about 10 years, been very reliable.

New guy in front at 180k miles, has a great service history, and even has GPS!!

I'll be storing the new one until winter breaks and the salt is off the road, but I'm super happy with the new bean! Hopefully it'll last another 100k miles!

Black Friday Might be over but SALES on CAT-Shields ( MILLERCAT) are NOT.

Hey Prius fam!

Just wanted to share a heads-up: if you're in the market for a CAT Shield to protect your car's catalytic converter, MillerCAT still has some great deals running. Perfect timing since the holidays can make thieves extra active. 🙄

Whether you have a new Prius or an older model, they've got you covered. go to catshield.com Use the code SAVENOWCR at checkout for an extra discount. 🎉

Stay safe out there, and happy holidays!!

Can only put in 2-3 gallons of gas - 2nd Gen

I've had my Gen II Prius for four years now and have only been able to drive about 230 miles before filling up. However, for the past few months I can only drive about 100 miles before having to fill up. I'm familiar with the fuel bladder giving problems for some and I've tried the various techniques for bypassing that issue, but to no avail. I have accidentally overfilled the tank twice due to the auto shutoff not working at two separate gas stations. I also live in FL, so it's hot here nearly all year. In short, do you think I need to replace the whole tank assembly? What's going on?

What to look for? 2017 Prius Two

Good afternoon!

I recently picked up a 2017 Prius Two from the dealership I work at. It was traded by an older couple who frequently traveled longer distances. The car has 115K on it, and to me, feels and operates like a new car. So far, I love it! It consistently gets 55 - 60 MPG on my daily commute, so no issues there. It is comfy, low road noise, and honestly, I think it rides like a bigger car would. I just had it in for an oil change, and I was curious if there are things I should be looking out for as this is my first hybrid vehicle.

Thank you for any tips, tricks or advice!

2010 Prius throttle body

I replaced the throttle body. Thought it was a bad part. Got an another new one, installed it and I am 100% certain everything is hooked up correctly. Now it randomly idles higher than it ever has (assuming around 2500-3000 rpm) when I’m coming to a stop, randomly driving. No rhyme or reason that I can see. Does the throttle body need a relearn procedure performed? Anything else I need to check?

Are gen 2 Prius still worth it in 2025?

Hey everyone,

I’m located in Sacramento, California (for pricing reference). I’m in the market for a Prius and have done a ton of research on which years to avoid and common issues. After searching for about six months, it seems like prices are finally coming down following the gas price spike in 2023-2024.

Right now, I’m finding most Gen 2 Prius models for around $6,000 with 160k miles and newer or recently repaired batteries. On the other hand, Gen 4 models are significantly more expensive, around $14,000 with 100k miles.

My primary use for this car would be driving to job sites—I’m a construction worker. I typically drive about 3,000 miles a month and spend 6-8 hours a day sitting in the car between jobs. I’ve heard that the Gen 2 Prius seats might not be very comfortable for extended periods—is that true?

Also, for anyone in hot climates like Sacramento, how does the air conditioning hold up in a Gen 2, especially during the summer when temperatures get extreme? Is it powerful enough to keep the cabin cool, even if the car is sitting idle for a while? Are there any common AC issues I should watch out for?

Would you still recommend buying a Gen 2 Prius in 2024, or should I consider stretching my budget for a Gen 4, considering the extra miles and time I’ll spend in the car?

EGR Replacement?!

I took my Prius into the shop to get a possible egr replacement… 2011 190k miles.. they said they didn’t see or hear anything that would suggest needing to replace the Egr. They quoted me around $1000 but they think it doesn’t need to be replaced(yet)/at all.. so what do we think y’all? Preventative maintenance and get it swapped out… or take the shops advice and not get it replaced. Also what an awesome shop, trying to save me money! Thanks!

Where do I get a maintenance schedule for 2013 Prius high mileage

It's about that time to get my vehicle inspected for routine maintenance. My car has 173k miles and the maintenance schedule I came across on the Toyota website only goes up to 120k miles. I seemingly can't find one with my mileage.

2009 2nd Gen Prius steering wheel not (always?) returning to center

Hi all! I recently purchased a 2009 2nd Gen Prius with 253.000 kilometers in it. What I find strange about it, is that when I'm driving and turning the steering wheel, after I passed the turn, the steering wheel does not return to the center position entirely: the movement feels sticky and I have to nudge it back to center. It seems it doesn't happen all the time though. I recorded a video of this, I hope it shows the symptoms clearly: https://photos.app.goo.gl/pUxUGzF1z1CCak1r7

Is this behaviour normal? If not, what should check first? Tire pressures are fine, what I could think of is alignment, steering rack or maybe power steering. Any thoughts? Thank you!

Why do people love to trash the Gen 3 Prius?

I have a Gen 3 Prius. It is a 2010 with pretty low mileage (94K). Although I’m not quite at the 100K mile mark, the car is still old and I haven’t really had anything go wrong in the car besides basic maintenance of course. I did get new shocks recently though, which is probably the biggest maintenance item. Why do people on these forums say “The Gen 3 is terrible!” Despite the fact that there are so many driving out on the road and so many for sale with high mileage. Are people rage baiting? I know the head gasket is known as an issue but I’ve had zero engine issues in mine. I also know someone with a Gen 3 that has 270,000 miles on it and no major issues and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Gen 3s I see driving around have similar mileage.

Anyone had luck trading in an older prius when purchasing new (used) vehicle?

I have a 2011 prius with less than 50,000 miles on it. Just had the 12V starting battery replaced, but it does have some other issues. Minor cosmetic issues inside, but the main thing is that the entertainment system/nav system doesn't work at all. Toyota dealership quoted me $2885 to replace it.

Anyone had luck trading in an older prius in fair condition? I'm worried they won't even be interested. But does have very low mileage!

Would appreciate any advice, I'm thinking to buy a 2024 Prius just to do delivery jobs like Amazon or other delivery stuff. How many miles can these thing last? Are they cheap to maintain? Is it a bad decision or good?

I'm tired of working 9-5 being told what to do, dealing with angry residents at my security job, co workers, bosses etc

I want flexible hours, and not being told what to do, when to work etc. will a Prius last me 900,000 miles? If I were to do delivery for the next 5-10 years? Would appreciate any advice 🙏

Gen 4 Brake Fluid Change

Hello all! My Prius is a used 2018 and I don’t think the brake fluid has ever been changed. Was hoping to do it in the next few days although I know with the ABS you are supposed to do it with a TechStream (which I don’t have ) due to risk of getting air in the system. Is it safe to put it in invalid mode and have someone help me? I found a PDF online that out lines the procedure without TeachStream but I am just nervous and don’t want to royally mess up my brakes. Also stupid question but is it safe to do all 4 wheels? Thanks!

Here is the link to the PDF: https://attachments.priuschat.com/attachment-files/2022/02/218924_4th_gen_Brake_Fluid_Replacement_with_and_without_Techstream.pdf

2004 2nd Generation 12 V Battery Replacement Nightmare

I figured if I post my journey here, perhaps someone much smarter or wiser than I can tell me what I'm doing wrong, Incoming Long but as detailed as I can make it post.

I drive a 2004 2nd Generation Toyota Prius that I bought used a year or so back from a used car dealership. I was rear ended and sent flying into a car in front of me, but there was minimal damage from the collision (I was able to drive off). Insurance covered the repairs, had my back and front end body both restored to look as good as new, and the car didn't seem any worse for wear.

I was curious after the fact if I could check the status of my prius battery to see how long it would last me and I learned I can check the voltage of the 12v in the back (I thought this was the hybrid battery but I learnt quickly this wasn't the case). At the time the video said if it's under 13V you should probably replace it. Mine indicated 9v, and I couldn't get the info screen to run while the car was driving - so I prayed it was wrong.

I work two jobs, one of them being for an auto parts store in the morning and a strip club bouncer at night.
It's cold out here in Vancouver British Columbia in November and one night; about two weeks after checking the 12v status; around 4am, I went to start up my car and I noticed that when I unlocked it - the rear passenger doors wouldn't open. I thought that was very strange. I tried getting the fob to open them, no luck, and then when I went back into the driver's seat to start the car the power briefly came on, but the ready light would not come up like it does when I'm braking. Then it immediately shut off. Car wouldn't start. I thought my battery had died.

Called BCAA to jump start it. When the driver arrived he was able to jump start my car, but his voltmeter at the jump point only read 4v, but he was able to jump start the car from the jump point at the front and I drove home that morning. He recommended that I should get a new battery because that's clearly too low as we both assumed that "hey it's an old battery, its cold, you should replace it."

This is when my nightmare began.
I youtubed how hard it would be to swap the 12v myself. Looked easy. Bought a new AGM battery for the vehicle and the tools to swap it out myself and got to work.

As I had no idea what I was actually doing, the job took far longer than it needed to, but after two hours I had swapped my battery and put the new one in.

When I hooked up the battery to the positive and negative terminals and bolted it back down, as soon as I connected the electronics to the positive terminal thing (the black box with the fuses and the 3 white connecting cables), the battery sparked at the negative grounded terminal. I read online that this was normal. So I finished up putting everything back and went to start my car.

However when I went to start the vehicle. It was dead. Wouldn't start. No power, no nothing. I thought I had done something wrong. Went to work the next day to talk to my coworkers about it and I was assured, the battery was brand new, it comes precharged, it should've worked.

I thought maybe it needed a jump start or something, went back home, got it jump started from a friend at the access point, but nothing. Car still dead, wouldn't start. Nothing.

I swapped in the old battery, just to check to see if my connections were backwards or how that one fit in the holder, and as soon as i connected the electronics, the car had power. I was able to start and drive it to work.

I took the brand new battery back, thinking maybe it was a dud (it does happen from time to time), got a new battery and went home to try again with this new battery. Same as before, when I finished connecting the new battery, no power, wouldn't start. I told my coworker this the next morning and he said to bring in both batteries, so I went to reconnect the old battery (just to start my car and drive it to work) but as I unconnected one of the white plugs from the positive terminal box the trunk light came on. I had power. I thought I had did it, and maybe my connection wasn't tight enough or down deep enough on the terminal, but I was able to start my car and drive it.

Now albeit this time, everything was pretty loose back there (the battery had alot of wiggle room underneath the black bar that houses it down). Drove to work the next day and this time (I guess from moving) the battery died again and I was able to open the back adjust the batteries position and got power and started again.

Drove home, (when I parked the battery died again - again I assume from it moving around back there), opened it back up and made sure I had it very secure, battery not moving, terminals as low as I could twist them, etc etc. Was able to start it and it seemed this time I had done it. I had swapped batteries for a new one, securing it down clearly was the issue.

I drove the car for 3 days. Told myself, if I could get through the weekend with no issues, that problem was sorted and I could close everything up back there.

This weekend I was working a double shift at the club and one morning shift at the auto parts store. Went to autostore just fine. No issues. Went and parked on a hill near the club that evening. No issues.

Went back to work the club again the next night, car started, drove there, parked, locked with the fob. No issues.

However as I ended my night job again, I was parked on the steep hill again. Car started and drove home no problem - but as I parked my car (fyi my home has a CC car park underground) the battery died again as I turned off my car (the problem I was dealing with when I hadn't fully secured the battery).

I tried bumping it, nudging the back seeing if I could get the battery to move, but nothing. Dead battery.
I went to bed and woke up early so I could see if I could get it started to go to my other job.

That morning, it was still dead (obviously) but as I was opening and closing my driver door the power suddenly came back on. I started the car, and drove it to my mechanic.

Now he can't look at the car until tomorrow, to which he told me to take the car home and bring it back the next day. I drove the car from the mechanics to work, parked it, locked it with fob and finished my shift. As I was leaving to go home, I prepared for the battery to die, I unlocked my car, popped the trunk and went back to the driver seat to try starting the car. As I sat down, battery died again, wouldn't start. I went to the trunk to start getting to the battery to see if I could move the terminals or whatever to get it to start, but by the time I moved from the driver side to the trunk, power came back on. I started my car, drove home. Parked it. Locked it with the fob and I'm not touching it until morning.

I have every intention of having my mechanic look at it if I can get it started in the morning and drive there tomorrow.

I'll update this if there's any changes, sorry for the long post, but is there anyone on here with any idea what could be the problem?

New Prius Owner

Im getting a new Prius in Feb and was wondering if theres anything I should know about the new models? Nuisances, Maintenance, Battery care, etc. I am a very mechanically inclined individual but thats on older stuff (carbs, sbc, small motors, etc) what Im not familiar on is the hybrid system on the newer vehicles. Im sure I will learn plenty and I want to know more about how the systems all work and such. Just never dug into it. Any good menus to know to turn off stuff or other cool features would be great to know.

  • Battery care
  • Oil change intervals
  • Transmission care? or let it be?
  • Best fuel to use? 91 octane? or does it run alright on 87 regardless because of ecu adjustments for post and pre detonation?
  • flex fuel compatible? what ethenol rating?

2024 Prius XLE AWD.
