What jobs can you get at FPL with your powerplant license ? How would the pay be and how is the work like , anyone ?
This is near our house and am just curious to learn more. Is this a super high voltage transmission line or just a distribution line? TIA
How do you get into powerline/linemen do I need electrical experince before even trying for a job or connections I’m from Alberta Canada and the only trade I’ve done is roughnecking on a drilling rig I really want to get into this work I just do not know how and don’t have connections
Trying my best to word this; can electrical power lines draw you into the electrical lines like a magnet field?
I’m asking in reference to countries in Central and S.A. who typically have two or three story buildings very close to the electrical lines with no real barrier or distance between someone standing and reaching out.
I'm looking into becoming a linesman and I just wanted to know if they still do drug test for weed if your in a state where it is legal. I smoke a couple times a week nothing more than weed but everything I've found is from 2017 and before. Does anyone have any answers about this?
I’m a lineman pre apprentice. When I was outed at school I got a lot of crap and few people wanted to pair up with me. I’m never experienced anything like this in my life not even in middle school or high school. I am as straight presenting as they come and very fit and competent. Is this a common occurrence in the field and should I try and stay closeted? Offer some advice and be chill with the hate if you are feeling inclined.
Anyone know how they run storm? Is it 12 time an half and 4 double or is it all double?
Let me explain, my boyfriend just graduated from Northwest linemen college in Texas and has relocated to California (personal circumstances he is in the process of transferring his CDL, etc to California in order to continue his search to enter the industry. I'm posting because seeing him struggle to get a foot in the door is difficult and although I have complete faith, I don't think it hurts to ask for help. I'd be eternally grateful to the men, women, etc or this subreddit for ANY knowledge, advice, etc on open opportunities regarding employment for a fresh graduate (who does not have experience obviously but is WILLING to work hard and learn and bust his butt) who just wants to get in the industry and put his knowledge and earned skills and licenses to use and work towards becoming a journeyman. Thank you to all the hard working electrical workers for any and all comments, messages, and interactions.
Just like the title says, I was walking my dog this morning and heard a loud sound of electricity. As I looked up a split second later I saw it had arched to the metal pole holding the lines and then created at least a 3ft explosion and big sparks flew everywhere. It was pretty loud and startling for a moment.
Any ideas on what caused/causes this? Left some gnarly marks on the pole too. Thanks
Hi, I just got hired with a big hydro company in Canada. Weed is legal in my province and I was a user until about 2 months ago. I quit cold turkey and haven’t had any weed since. Company is doing a full panel drug test, I was worried I would still have THC in my system so I did an at home test and tested positive for THC, do you know what the repercussions would be even though I don’t use anymore
Hi I’m considering becoming a linesman and have a few questions .
Currently level 1 SPRAT high rise window cleaner making roughly 38/hr CAD ( piece work just my average so far this season )
At the end of the day I’m tired as fuck and don’t feel like doing ANYTHING
How is the physicality of this job,? And how much are you earning?
Do you think you could go to the gym after a day of work? This is essentially the work life balance I’m looking for- gym twice a week.
Thanks in advance lol
Hi
Coming back from a trip as a passenger, I started looking at the poles that provide us those juicy and precious electrons.
I read up on the voltage of the main transmission lines and the step downs on the poles to feed the houses. While reading I started looking up and saw transformers every couple poles. 1 line coming from the tip of the pole, a disconnect below, feeding into the transformer, and then a line going under about 5 feet below the tip. All makes sense. I can the that bottom line branching off towards houses. But then I notice that not all houses have transformer. Which also makes sense because I get they are expensive and can probably feed more that a single house. But I also notice that it looks like multiple transformers are tied to the same bottom line. So I asked myself if transformers could be parrallel. It seems like so, understanding matching and the source needing to be the same as the other to make sure they are in phase etc. So, are the transformers on the lines supplying houses parrallelysed or are they different line that I just can't see.
tl.dr
Are transformers on the lines supplying houses parrallelysed or are they different phases and I can't see the difference from the ground.
I have a performance test coming up and I believe one of the parts of the test is opening a manhole properly with a hook. Can someone explain step by step how to properly do that? How do I put the hook in? Which way should I have the hook pointing when inside the lid? Do I stand across from the key hole of the lid and pull in this direction? Or do I stand on the same side of the key hole and pull this way, away from the hole? I believe the manhole will be a round one.
Thank you in advance.
Also, bonus question lol How do I lower a 40 lbs toolbox in said hole without dropping or touching sides.
🙏🏽

So I’m at a road block here. I’ve read through albats standards and policies but really need a clearer picture. How hard is it to start as a Groundman through albat? Things such as the process of getting on the list and getting through the whole process. I have a lot of bills to stay on top of and can’t really afford a week of no income. I understand they pay you while you’re learning and such but is that through the whole entire course? Sometimes I see where guys say they just “sign the books” and they’re automatically in? Just need some clarification on how the whole process works.
I’m in high school and currently interested in the trade but through my research I’ve been wondering, in a job where being tired can risk so much, how do you stay awake and focused if you have to work a shift in the night or something like that?
Is it worth going to a 15 week trade school for line man ?
I was wondering if anybody knew what legal hoops you have to jump through to start a power line contracting company. I plan on starting out just getting my foot in the door through storm and doing backyard pole change out any my local city and co-op. Any advice is appreciated! Also I’m based in NC and really don’t want to grow past my surrounding counties. Thanks!
Hello, I’m 21M thinking about going to line school. I’m currently in the Army and getting out soon. Is there any college degrees that I could get that’ll help me get more money or a higher position while working on power lines? Thank you
I’ve been in school climbing for about 2 1/2 weeks using a patriot. I feel comfortable with the gaffs and all but once I hit 20-25 feel I just get a mental block and can’t climb past. I was a firefighter beforehand so I don’t have an issue with heights, any idea of what’s causing the anxiety or tips on how to help? Thanks.
My late Pops was a lineman for CG&E which became Cinergy which became Duke Energy. I have some of his old gear and I don't know if it's worth anything or if it's even still usable. Where can I find out this kind of info considering I have -50 knowledge on any of his gear. Thank you so much for reading.
