Here's the quick breakdown: There's no "bad" part of Portland. The Peninsula is the walkable downtown urban area. Everything outside of that is suburban neighborhood with light mixed retail.
If you are looking for a place to rent, Craigslist is the recommended site.
City Resources:
Report city problems (burned out streetlight, safety issues, potholes, broken park equipment, etc...) with See Click Fix. The phone app is recommended so you can send a photo.

Does anybody know how many Michelin Stars The Continental has? They make the best food and drinks I’ve ever had.
If only you could smoke cigarettes in there, it would be my favorite restaurant in Maine.

Hello there
I have a friend from Angola, he speaks French, Portugese and medium bad English (he's taking classes right now).
He worked on oil platforms in the past and has a bunch of technical certifications with that. He also was the cook on the ship at one point.
He's a lovely friendly guy. He is having a hard time finding work. He is desperate to work. I got him an interview at a sort of ethnic food place. They said his English wasn't good and they'd have to train him. They may still hire him but I'm not sure.
I think he would be good for any sort of laboring situation, he could work in food service, etc. His language is holding him back right now but he definitely can communicate basic stuff.
He's such a kind guy and I know he wants to work. I met him a while back and he found out I was learning French and he just gave me his number and told me to text him in French so I could practice. He didn't ask me for anything. But I know he really needs a job and I haven't found anything for him yet.
Any ideas?
Edit: he has a work permit.
Gotta say I was pleasantly surprised with the Continental's selection.
Hello! Are there any local businesses with cool Hanukkah decor/Judaica I can support this year? I’m tired of getting my wares from big box stores. ✡️TIA🕎
I spent 27 years living in Portland and moved away in 2018. I will be back there for September and October of 2025. I’ll be working and need a place to live. Nothing fancy, but I do need my privacy. Airbnb is not affordable in long term situation and the camp grounds close early October. Ideas??
Anybody else not leave the house without a knife?
Looking for any and all ideas regarding a job in or around Portland. I’ve looked online and seen a handful of places. But, none that directly fit. Any ideas? My focus is in medical quality assurance and continuous improvement.
Where would you recommend in the area that I can explore and chill in my car without annoying people? Any place fun or scenic?
I'm tired of restaurant inflation, so I've been bringing a lunch and eating in my car recently. (I have been trying to avoid being pestered by coworkers so I'm not eating at my desk)
Did you have any spots you'd recommend for parking and not annoying other people? Bonus points if it's less bleak than our corporate parking garage or otherwise private so my introverted heart can unwind.
I don’t know if they (or a person who knows them) are on Reddit but I found a card in the ATM machine at Bangor Savings in Falmouth. Bank was closed and no one was in the parking lot. I dropped it off at the Falmouth Police Department just so nobody would take it in case this person is unaware that their card is missing. The name on the card is Ali Y Abdullahi.
Does anyone know of any good tree lots around ? Preferably non profit and for a good cause. I saw the rotary lot in Mill Creek Sopo. Wondering about Portland.
Looking for jobs in the hospitality industry I.e restaurant, event and banquet planning, bartending. I’m having a hard time finding anywhere in Portland that is looking to add people to their team right now. Any clues are helpful!!
Any Portland restaurants looking to hire servers right now?
It's been awhile since I've been out in the AM brekkie scene. Where do people go for breakfast/brunch nowadays?
Tell me the best places around to get a good hearty breakfast sandwich. Woke up with a wicked hankering for a handheld breakfast this morning and realized I don’t really have a place in town
Happy to see this new late night food truck on the outskirts of Bayside. Saw it on postmates / doordash available for pickup so I ordered and went down there, at first I thought it was going to be in Chipotle's parking lot but it's just across the street. The saffron rice, shirazi salad and kebabs definitely hit the spot and the guy who ran the cart Ali is friendly, I recommend giving it a try. For those who will be driving, the extra benefit is that it's in a much larger and less busier parking lot than Trader Joe's.
Asking for a friend, an actual real friend that exists… Someone that I know abandoned their car in the park-and-ride a couple of years ago and is now concerned that it has been sitting in an impound collecting fees, however they have never been contacted by the city or the state… They are reluctant to inquire But also fearful of not inquiring. Does anybody have any idea what happens when an abandoned car is taken by the city? It sat there for a solid year and a half before it was taken.
I’m looking for “experience” gift ideas for my sister who recently moved to Portland. She doesn’t really need much for herself or her house so I want to avoid gifting her any “stuff.” She is very curious and loves to try new things so I figured she would appreciate an experience or class far more than a physical item. I don’t live in the area and only visit a few times a year so I would really appreciate some local expertise - any unique “experience” gifts you can recommend? Budget is flexible but around $100 would be a good place to start! Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have to share!
Coming to Portland this week on business. Looking for a bar showing Thursday Night Football. Any suggestions?
As the title says, wondering if there are any winter ocean dip groups active?
Hello,
I’m back in town and looking for a reputable mechanic. I’ll need a water pump replaced and would like to find a fair deal.
Any help, is much appreciated.
I have a bunch of new material I'm psyched to play - big hits, obscure but super cool covers, and originals. Hope to see you!!
