[ACADEMIA]Spontaneous Pneumothorax v. Age (1/2)

Based on a study funded by the National Taiwan University Hospital Hsin-Chu, PSP for patients have increased from 5.05 to 7.18 per 100,000 patients in the last decade (Analysis based on PSP between 1997 and 2013). Furthermore, statistics find that compared to aggressive treatment and treatment by operation, the recurrence rate did not significantly change. (1) Take the analysis for what it is, the end decision is to listen to the options and suggestions given to you by your medical providers.

[ACADEMIA]Alternative Operative Procedure for Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax

Dubbed as the 'Ultrasonic Technology for Management of Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax,' this alternative technique manages primary spontaneous penumothorax (PSP) via induced pleurodesis and an ultrasonic scalpel. This alternative technique was performed to nine patients and showed promising sealing of blebs (complete sealing of the resection line by coagulative tissue) on the lung. (1)

1-Procedure performed under general anesthesia
2- Three-port thoracoscopic technique...etc.
3- Post identification of air leakage, blebs are clamped and 'power level-3' energy is applied to seal the ling.
4- Lung inflated with a pressure of 20 cm H2O
5- Parietal Pleura is scarred to induce pleurodesis

Cost Effectiveness of VATS Over Non-Surgical Treatment of Pneumothorax

While some may argue whether the VATS or non-surgical catheter approach is more effective for first time treatment, the reality is that the shorter hospital stay will most likely make up for the price differential. Based on a clinical study, Schramel et al. it was found that VATS during the initial treatment of Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax resulted in less complications and a cost 42% lower than non VATs groups.

Why PneumothoraxO2?

I’ve noticed that there is a lack of a SUSTAINED pneumothorax community on Reddit. For this reason, PneumothoraxO2 will serve as a continuing hub for everything Pneumo-related!

SUBSCRIBE here to discuss or just stick around with those who understand.
