Watch face/app ideas

Unlike when I last used my Pebble I now know how to code, I got the Pebble SDK working last night and put together a basic watch face, but I'm curious what ideas people have for interesting watch faces/apps that I could make

Music Control and Casting

Music control (Volume/Skipping) was one of the great features of the original pebbles back in the Bluetooth days. The growth of casting audio to devices from your phone (or smart devices) rather than the phone a watch is connected to streaming the audio directly means has kind of changed this paradigm.

I can't remember what the mechanic was to get to music control but in it, the option to easily switch between (and lock to) any of the cast devices on the phone's network would help here. Maybe double/triple press from center button to switch to bt/cast device selection?

My PTS died a few years ago and can't remember if this functionality exists, I think casting control kinda worked for devices cast to from the phone (remember it being hit and miss though?). An easy and reliable (no-look) volume control for casted audio in the network would really upgrade the magic of the pebble now that the OS has been open sourced.

Battery search turned into a watch purchase......lessons learned

So I bought a new inbox pebble steel for a great price and used it for my first battery install. Learned a few things while doing the install and then upgrading from original firmware.

  • Be carefully during the entire process and take your time. Taking the board out was the most frustrating part

-Use a multimeter or video to guide you when ready to install battery, last thing you want to do is fry the board

  • reverse install is just as difficult because you need to put pressure so everything clicks into place, was nervous when doing this since it's so small

-once everything is said and done , if you are on original firmware you need to use gadget bridge to install the migration upgrade and then do a normal firmware install. The app was straight forward and worked well!

Happy this turned out well and now looking to upgrade the rest of the steel batteries and try the extended battery mod. Goodluck everyone!

Music control without an app

I saw this comment on stack overflow:

Bluetooth accessories use the AVRCP protocol that is part of the Bluetooth stack. Pebble uses that too in the official "Music" application on your Pebble but this is not available to 3rd party apps.

With the source code being released to the public now, do you think it would be possible to make an app to control music on the iPhone from the watch without using an iOS app? Sometimes it's all that I need.

recent news about Pebble - are they really good?

hi,

its nice to see that a new Pebble app would be available in the Play store and even Apple store, and that some activity is back and that many Pebbles were subsequently removed from drawers. ok.

but..

for those who already have Pebbles, in good condition and working fine, are the recent events really good news?

i'm not in the Pebble founder's mind but logically his purpose would be to produce and sell new Pebbles, and i can't blame him for this.

i could buy a new one if there is some feature that is worth it, but my priority is to continue to use my watches. i pay Rebble subscription and am happy with it.

and i would be disappointed that Rebble team, devs, and all the great guys here say "ok now we're moving to Pebble 3rd Gen and forget about existing Pebbles". i wouldn't blame them for this either.

what do u guys think? thx

The miracle of love

Now that everybody is sharing, let me tell my short little story.

A few years back I was going thorough the consumerist rumination whether I "need" a smart watch, I kept going through articles and YT reviews of guys saying that it is aweosme to have a Galaxy 42mm (bigger watches are ugly) or that it is a pointless invention that goes to the Drawer soon enough - all seemingly depending on whether the video is sponsored.

In the end I felt like it is too much of a hassle to charge an expensive toy every day. Besides, I don't care for a heart rate monitor, and the phone counts my steps anyway, if I ever need that.

And then, one of these loopy days, I looked at a thrift e-store and peeked, again, into the watch section. A lot of Chinese crap, then the old used 100€+ Galaxy Watch ... And then I recognised something I had seen many years before, something that had fascinated me and which I had forgotten, as I could never afford such stuff, back then at least. I had seen that thing on the ancient Kickstarter. God, it must be prehistoric! Surely, the traders figured the same. This predeluvian gizmo was hovering on the brink of trashing it for good at ...

12€

The archeologist in me decided it's worth a nice fossil. And the rest is history.

Imagine me discovering Rebble and suddenly having the coolest friggin watch money can buy!

Anyway, it did find it's way to the drawer once I started doing a lot of manual workshop work. You can see some of the scrapes I didn't evade. And then I pulled it out, a couple year later, literally a couple weeks ago. And I was just telling somebody how this is the coolest thing, although sadly very much abandoned by tech gods.

And what do you know! A few days later, IT IS SO BACK!!!

I can't help but feel that this Pebble is a lucky charm. Magical is what it is!

Anyone have success finding a battery for a Pebble Time non-steel?

I'm seeing PT 'compatible' batteries on the web, but, I'm also seeing lots of people complaining about fit and battery life. Or is the battery for the PT the same as for the PT Steel?

Testing dictation on iOS

I've been a rebel user since 2018 and just subscribe to rebel paid services. The Reminders app doesn't work anymore for dictation as I figured, but what app can I use to test? Does dictation work at all?

How likely is it that features get restored?

I have literally two requests of my Pebble. I want it to reliably give me notifications to my wrist, and I want to be able to dictate messages back to people when they text me while I'm in the shower.

I know with Rebble I can generally get notifications (although it hasn't been crazy reliable as of late) but without paying for Rebble getting voice dictation hasn't been possible (at least to my knowledge). Phones are WAY more powerful than they were a decade ago, what are the chances we get LOCAL dictation on the Pebble Time?

With the new hardware I hope they keep focused on the things that made Pebble a success - affordable price, decent hardware, AMAZING battery life, and a strong focus on letting the community run with it and do crazy things. It truly was before its time and I feel smart straps would TOTALLY hit different now that things like 3d printers are so common. Super excited to see what comes.

Question about PebbleOS Being Open Source now

So like all of you I am psyched to see Pebble making a comeback, and in the meantime I had a project in mind and I want to know if it is doable/how difficult it is. I have an Inky Frame kit from pimoroni and was wondering if it would work to load up PebbleOS to run on it. The frame has a Pico 2 W built-in which would likely be the brain.

I don’t have a ton of experience programming, so is this too out of reach/too difficult for a hobby project?

Just ordered a new battery and band. So excited!

I originally used the first pebble, then the time round when it was released. I loved these when I was in high school. I'm so happy they're being resurrected!

Pebble app 4.4.3 Notifications

I installed the Pebble app on my Android 11 phone and the only thing that doesn't work on my Pebble Time is notifications coming from my phone. I do get Calendar notifications accompanied by a vibration, but no text, email or phone notifications. Quiet Time is disabled and on the Pebble app, in notifications, all toggle switches are flipped to the right for all installed apps. In my phone's Bluetooth, it shows Pebble Time 18A3 connected, and Pebble Time LE Paired. In the Pebble app settings, I checked "Disable built-in SMS notifications. In my phone's notifications settings, I enabled the Pebble app. Also, the phone is not muted. Any suggestions?

Update: Problem solved! 😁 I installed the Notify app onto my Pebble Time and then installed the Notify for Pebble app onto my phone. I was surprised to find the Notify for Pebble app still on the Google Play Store.

Pebble Steel reboot loop

I was going through my storage and found a Pebble Steel in box that I didn't know I had (I had the original Pebble). I tried plugging it in but its stuck on a reboot loop. I saw a guide online that mentioned holding buttons down until an error message pops up and to update it through the app. I tried this but the app never sees the watch.

If I yoink the cable out the watch dies immediately. I have to assume that it needs a new battery, yes? And if so, is it easy to replace? I have no experience with the Pebble Steel so I apologize if this is common knowledge that I missed

Pebble Steel BT Issue

So I resurrected my OG Steel. Worked for a bit but then got some BT LE notices from the app. There are repair options for the BT and remote notifications but neither work. I found a post about pairing the Steel as a Time Round, that isn’t working at all. Anyone seen this before? I’m running IOS 18.2.

Pebble 2 HR Parts

Hey Pebblers,

I've been looking for a replacement motherboard for my pebble 2 HR. If anyone has a defective P2, or one they want to get rid of, let me know. I would love to get mine back to life. I'm located in Europe, so I would prefer to get something from here in an attempt to avoid the customs costs.
