3-part reductions of Bach's Cello Suites, Violin Sonatas and Partitas

Dear counterpoint lovers,

I proudly present you my new article concerning the contrapuntal network behind the Cello Suites, the Violin Sonatas and Partitas of J.S. Bach. There's been a lot of research yet, but I think it could be a new interesting resource because -as far as I know- it is the first time almost all of those pieces are reduced to 3-part counterpoint, hence shedding a different light onto their polyphonic nature.

My article can be found on Thestrad.com, tag: "Laurent Matthys".

You can also visit me on youtube: "The Lost Art of Counterpoint".

Please share your opinion!

Thanks a lot!

An idea, thoughts?

I had the idea that someone in charge of or at least people who are influential within a partimeti network, internet or real life social network, could establish a sort of cantus firmus/partimento challenge where a theme is selected, or written for the larger audience in that group to do their own realisations of and send them in with some discussion about their choices etc.

I thought this could potentially take the media surrounding partimento a bit more into the practical realms it so belongs within and also further open up opportunities of discovery for newcomers of partimento to find and hear/see in a demonstrative form.

Anyway just a rambling idea, although I'd love to hear any thoughts on it.

We would also like to remind you that the awarding of scholarships is only an economic matter and does not exclude voluntary participation, so everyone is free to attend the meeting, without any kind of restriction.

A detailed workshop programme will be published on this website in the coming days.

Tzu-Yu Yung

Claire O’Donnell

Auditors

Claudia Patanè

Note from the commission

For the active participants, we have given preference to pianists or fortepianists with experience in improvisation.

For the auditors, we have tried to represent the various types of musicians who may be interested in improvisation in various ways.

The order of the two lists does not represent a ranking of merit.

Of course we would be happy to welcome everyone who applied, but our budget does not allow us to accommodate everyone.

Giorgio Sanguinetti, Costantino Mastroprimiano, John Mortensen

Rule of the octave right hand voicing

Hello everyone am learning rule of the octave but am little bit confused i just need some clarification if some one can help me

For example in the rules when they say

1 take 3rd major 5th and 8ve

2 takes 3rd 4th and major 6 Etc

Dose that mean i need to add these 3 intervals or i can remove any voice and in case i add different voices would that be wrong harmonically or just am not following the rules?, and in case i wanted to reduce the voice to 2 voices or 3 voices i just take the most important voice from the given rule for example for 1 it would be 3 to determine the chord quality.
