The Order of the Arrow, Scouting America's honor society. We are scouts and scouters who love camping and are dedicated to serving others.
A subreddit for the Order of the Arrow, Boy Scouts of America.
A few rules...
1.Scout Conduct
Keep your conduct scout friendly. If you wouldn't say it during a scout function, you don't need to say it here.
2.OA Topics
BSA subjects are nice to talk about, but this is an Order of the Arrow sub, so keep it related to the OA in some way. There are other subs for more general scouting topics.
3.Safeguarding Ceremonies
Ordeal level conversation. Don't discuss details about brotherhood and vigil ceremonies. All arrowmen are welcome, so don't ruin the progression of the ceremonies for others by sharing too much.

My troop is not interested in the Order. In the 5 times we’ve held an election, maybe 12 out of the 25 people have actually gone to their induction weekend. Of those 12, only four ever went on their brotherhood walk. The other three have all moved away for college and don’t show any signs of wanting to get involved, leaving just me. I’ve tried to talk to the troop about my experiences with the OA (staffing winter camp, making new friends, attending NLS, attending NOAC, etc.) but the troop doesn’t seem to listen. Very few of our adults were OA members, and those that are are never around. What should I do?
What are Some Good Crafts we could do with members of our lodge...
Because I want to start doing crafts at OA events and Crafts fall under AIA.
Do any of your lodges have any cool tradition they are Kept?
specifically in the AIA and Ceremony field?
Our Lodge is having our Fall Induction/Vigil weekend soon. My concern is there has been a fire ban in effect since last week. How would we conduct a Vigil Weekend in these circumstances? Any advice would be appreciated, feel free to dm me if you don’t want to post specifics here. YIS
I held my vigil a few weekends ago and I absolutely despise the new sash material and quality. Is there anywhere (other than eBay) I could buy a new vigil sash made of the old (pre 2020) sash material?
Hello all, I wanted to ask something that’s been bothering me. So, I, am a lodge chief in a fairly big lodge land wise and our council has been selling camps left and right to the point we will only have one in our whole 4 state council. This, of course impacts our lodge and over the year, i’ve done everything to push people to come to our events and have tried my hardest to work with my LEC. Only problem is, half of my LEC won’t reach back out or hasn’t been active in months. Fall fellowship is coming up and not much is planned due to my LEC not pitching in and doing their end of the planning and I feel as if i’m failing as a chief. But also feel as I can’t do nothing about this. Can anyone recommend anything or have any similar experiences? I feel as if our own council is killing themselves and taking us down with them.
First- Our lodge has been a mess the several years due to bad leadership by youth and adults advisors. We are finally getting out act together. This is the first year we are going to try and run a Vigil Election correctly with a actual youth ran committee. I have been asked to the be advisor and am pushing for this big time since that is what is written. But I just held my vigil last year. My question. Who can and can not be in the room during elections? Before they let everyone and anyone OA be in the room and everyone had a vote. I know I need adults for 2 deep YPT. I will need one female leader. Thank you

I’m an Associate Adviser for a chapter in Indiana. We’re looking at new merchandise and I wanted to bring some ideas to the kids. Our chapter is rebuilding, and while some of the adults have a wealth of experience, the kids do not. Of course this will be their decision, but I want to give them some ideas to get the creative process started.
What merch has worked well for your Lodge or chapter? Of course we’re going to do t-shirts, hats, and patches, but what are some unique ideas? I’ve seen some custom knee socks (think football socks). Key chains, lanyards? Looking for some out-of-the-box stuff.
I got recently elected for the Trainings Position, being new to this area of the OA, are there any trainings you'd recommend I put on for my lodge? Wag-O-Shag 651
I just got elected to be in charge of program in my lodge. I'm looking for ideas and I was wondering if people had really notable activities or themes at OA events they really enjoyed? Or what they wish they could have at a spring/fall fellowship event?
Anyone use Square POS for event registration? We have our lodge trading post on the site and it's the way we track our inventory and all trading post purchases, but I noticed that you can also have Event Registrations through the system. Anyone use it?
Title says it all. I found out tonight that I was nominated, and can do my ordeal at our fall conclave in September. My husband has been brotherhood since he was a teen, my son just went through his ordeal in June, and my daughter will likely be voted in next year. I had told my husband that if it came up, I really didn't want to be nominated, because I just don't feel that committed to scouts beyond when my kids age out. I've felt my participation has been mostly only because we have literally no other female leaders, so I'm there because I have to be for my daughter. However, I'm truly honored that the other adults clearly see me living the scout oath and law more than I do! It's not the ordeal itself (I'm in my early 40s and relatively fit, went through sorority pledging in college and have had 2 kids, so hard work and sleep deprivation aren't foreign to me)... I just don't know if it's something I want to add to my plate. But I also don't want to "snub" the honor/nomination. Help me decide.
I know the other 3, but what's the significance of the turtle?
A a month ago i was tapped out into oa and I plan on getting brotherhood when i get the chance. Im going to read the oa handbook. I already looked at the page in the brotherhood section that has the Questions and answers do I have to remember all the answers and is there anything else i should study to my scout master told me to read the full book but im not that smart to remember all of it? i plan on taking notes, is there anything specific i should focus on?
I ( an ordeal member) recently got the OA lapel pin designated in the handbook as for non uniform and civilian use of all members of the OA. And was wondering if anyone else has used one and how they placed it?
Ok, so, I am my chapter (riverhawk) inductions vice chief and my lodge (nentico 12) inductions vice chief has asked me for ideas for what we could add to the lodge. e.g. new traditions, different merch, just things that will bring more to come to lodge and chapter events and how ti keep them active. I will take any ideas, I've come up with some but I feel like some other people's ideas, even if not from my lodge or chapter would be helpful
(Sorry for the horrible punctuation and anything that's wrong about it)
We have a mom and special needs scout going through Ordeal. We plan on putting mom and scout together in the same crew and having mom next to scout for the night alone. Mom's concern is that scout gets up several times during the night for bathroom breaks and if scout doesnt wake her, she's worried scout will wander off. How can we keep scout safe and keep the spirit of the challenge?
What are some of your favorite themes for Fall, Winter, Spring, or Summer Fellowships that your lodge has done and/or you've seen other lodges do? I know my lodge did a Harry Potter Spring Fellowship recently that was pretty fun.
I am rejoining Scout after time away. I got my Eagle in 1992. I was in OA and received Brotherhood. I have been a den leader for my son and he crossed over to a troop 1 1/2 years ago. When that happened I reactivated with OA.
I am absolutely shocked by the amount of younger Scouts that have Vigil honor. When I was in OA, Vigil was almost completely adults and maybe a few who had just aged out and were JASMs. I go to OA activities now and many of the Vigil honorees aren’t even old enough to drive yet. This seems to have cheapened the honor IMO. You can’t have given much selfless service when you haven’t even been in the organization but a couple of years.
Hi all,
I am currently looking at my schedule for NOAC and did not get any of the afternoon activities I was looking at. Is it possible that spots might open up last minute for these, and if not, what other activities in the afternoon might be available? Thanks!
