REMINDER: Tuesday, November 7 is Election Day in Orange County

Polls will be open from 6:00 AM until 9:00 PM, but if you're already on line to vote at 9:00 they will still let you vote.

You can still request an Absentee Ballot from the Board of Elections, too. To get it either print out a copy of the application, fill it out, and bring it to the BoE, or just go to the BoE and they'll give you one.

Sample ballots and the Absentee Ballot application are available on the BoE's website.

Every town in the county is having an election and most of them are probably going to be decided by less than 200 votes, so use your voice and make a difference!

Sorry this kind of niche but I’m a student at OCCC and I’ve got an essay due at midnight and an online midterm due by Thursday.

Just curious if anybody knew anything more, thanks!

Are Jobs hiring around the Area?

Hello, I just thought I'd post this question and may be it can help me in my job search, or someone else.

Are there any well paying jobs that are hiring at the moment?

I currently work retail security, just to make ends meet. But I am looking to make a move to a better job that speaks to me and has benefits with paid time off.

***Edit: Thanks for all the replies and for helping me generate new ideas.

Since I've moved here close to 3 years ago, I have tried a few jobs. Coming from the city, I guess I was used to every type of job having paid time off and having some type of benefits. And I was not used to being out working from 10-16 hours a day , but if I was, I would be getting paid for every hour after I arrived at work.

I tried keeping my job from the city at first, but with a 4-5 hour daily travel time, it was taking a toll on my car as well as my paycheck.

• I got my CDL license and started driving school buses. The initial sign on bonus and pay rate were good incentives. But I didnt understand about split shifts and didnt realize I would not get paid when school is mot in session. I then drove for a public transportation company who gave me more hours, but had alot of downtime in between. Later I found out I developed an allergy to diesal fumes and decided to search for another type of work.

• I wish I could be a contractor or work for one, because theres good money to be made up here from that line of work, but I also have severe allergies for alot of the materials they use. I have tried with mask protection and it hasnt worked.

• At the moment, I am working in retail security. Which is ok, but they dont have any benefits or paid time off whatsoever. Actually, I have been doing security for quite some time and the best job Ive had was working in house at a college campus. Though security work is not as lucrative here as it is in the city. Having a college degree in business management, I also wanted to branch out into another field.

I moved my family up here for a better quality of life, but It's becoming clear that the jobs in Orange County, NY are not the same as in the city and I dont want to sound like I'm being too picky, though 18/hr with no benefits or any type of PTO is really making it challenging for me.

Election Reform & Democracy discussions; non-partisan.

Did you know every local government has home rule powers (local control over local affairs) over how to conduct their local elections? Did you know there are far better ways to do elections than we do currently? Would you like to learn about the process and options for upgrading local government?Ask me about it here!

Voting method and elected offices is one of the key enumerated powers under the home rule clause of our state constitution and all local governments have these powers and your community could be using them.

Voting methods impact:

  • Polarization in politics
  • Candidate entry into races
  • Candidate and campaign behaviors
  • What voters matter to what campaigns
  • How much policies matter compared to branding
  • Voter turnout and behavior
  • Candidate viability
  • Accountability of politicians
  • How granularly-represented voters are by the constituted legislature.
  • And most importantly how powerful a vote really is.

My recommended reform is STAR voting; though the topic of what reform where is nuanced and needs to be determined with respect to the locality and the communities needs.STAR voting:

  • Mitigates the effects of gerrymandering, intentional and unintentional.
  • Makes candidates benefit from appealing to all voters and alienating fewer.
  • Eliminates vote splitting and the spoiler effect, voters can't be divided and conquered.
  • Increases competition in elections.
  • Make's all candidates viable. I like to say that with STAR voters pick the finalists too, not just the winner!
  • Makes elections more policy driven and less brand driven.
  • Does not favor polarizing and divisive campaigning; while our current voting method does.
  • Early evidence suggests it will lower the impact of money in politics.

In STAR voting, voters can give every candidate they like a score from 0-5 and the two most highly scored are the finalists. The finalist preferred by the majority is elected. One election, two rounds, better elections.

The big question is always going to be proportional vs non proportional voting (I think I need a glossary of terms here) and proportional is better by the metric of giving voters even more power and representation, but is more complicated in certain ways. Any non proportional voting method (like we currently use) is going to result in more unrepresented voters who elected no one, than a similar proportional design.

I am actually doing a series of recurring online talks about the matter on Wednesdays at 5, hopefully every week.

Dog at Stewart Park in Rock Tavern

I came across a dog at Stewart Park in Rock Tavern about 3/4 mile in from the main parking area on 207. The dog was on New Road and went on to Orchard trail. It was about 2:15 this afternoon (6-17).

The dog was about 40lbs, brown, mixed breed. It had on a green collar but I could not get close enough to get any information. It seemed friendly but wouldn't let me pet him. I let New Windsor animal control know and they were reaching out to other towns.
