OEM tablespace reorganization

Hi guys, I'm looking at OEM tablespace reorganization feature to move objects and reclaim space. I'm going with tablespace rename method where original tablespace will be dropped and new tablespace will be renamed to original. It's a 2 node 12c rac with DG. I have some questions here. I read , if i turn off table logging , then table move will be faster since no redo is generated. But my doubt is ,if i turn off table logging during before OEM reorganization activity ,will this affect the standby database ?

Oracle Shop down?

I'm trying to access https://shop.oracle.com/ but it keeps on giving me a HTTP 403 error (with "Access to the procedure named: f is denied.") after logging in. Anyone else have the same problem?

I got a second notice for a failed payment (they suddenly can't charge my CC anymore), so I need to pay my bill ASAP to avoid disruption of my services.

Jr Oracle DBA - Distro Selection for Learning Lab

I'm a SQL Server DBA who is transitioning onto the Oracle side of our company's DBA team. I've got a bunch of catching up to do so I've been given resources to stand up a learning lab in our virtual dev environment.

I'm trying to decide which Linux distro(s) to install on.

Is there much difference between, say, RHEL 8, Oracle Linux 8, Rocky 8 and Centos Linux 8.5 (the last version before they went "Stream") - especially from the point of view of using it to run Oracle 19c (and possibly 12c to emulate some older stuff in our environment). Except for CentOS I'd probably go latest build on them (8.9 at this point) unless there's a reason not to).

I know they're all RHEL-adjacent, so should I just go RHEL and assume the others are the same? Or are there particularities of each that would make it worth standing up one of each?

Cheers

Can I apply for jobs in US

I have a valid H1 visa, have had it for more than a year now.

The company I was planning on joining didn't want to start my payroll because of budget reasons. Instead of waiting for the US employer I decided to switch companies and joined oracle few months ago.

Now I'm wondering if I can apply for a job within oracle in US.

Does oracle let employees apply for openings in other geos? If yes can they transfer my H1 visa?

Please help me out if you have any info about this, or know someone who made a switch.

Thanks!

PS: I work from India

Raises at Oracle are possible after all (USA)

The title says it all. Oracle is pretty well known for not giving raises to their employees.

I joined Oracle 2 years with the full expectation of not seeing a raise for 3-4 years so this is both unexpected and great news.

I didn’t get a raise at my for 4 years at my old job. This taught me I needed to manage my image, my relationships with key stake holders, play workplace politics and (with utter disgust) cheerlead myself.

I absolutely (expletives) hate cheerleading myself but has to be done. This is why there are so many narcissists at the top. They cheerlead themselves without a second thought. I still cringe when I forward a “thank you for doing a great job with this customer” email but it must be done.

Hope this helps

Does oracle india allow international relocation

Hi everyone,

Does oracle india allow international relocation to their Europe offices ? I have got an offer at oracle india and the package is not much attractive to switch but my current company has no onsite opportunity so was considering if this oracle could bring something down the line.

PS it's for the oracle life science and some of the team is present in US and some in India.

Help Please White Background to Dark/Black

Hello Oracle users. I'm needing some help to change my account preferences from regular to dark mode. I seriously struggle to read white screens and cannot seem to figure out how to change this site. It's not the cool fun Oracle you all are probably used to. It's the Oracle: Agile product lifecycle management version. As always, the 'help' button is off no use. Thoughts/ ideas?

what does oracle support identifier get me?

Long story short. I have access to a support identifier for Oracle. It looks like it allows me to download all the patches for Oracle 21c and 19c.

Is that true?

Do I still need to purchase a license for Oracle 19 or 21 SE? It’s free to download and I thought the license only gives you access to their support.

Oracle HCM / Alight experiences

We are looking into a new payroll provider and one of the candidates is Alight. We have Oracle HCM and it needs to seamlessly integrate.

Does anyone have experience with Alight and the integration with Oracle HCM?

Unable to connect to Primevera database

Hi, I'm writting here because I can't get a hold with customer support.

When trying to connect to my database and simply login. The program says unable to connect to database. So, I look into it and the database seems to be gone from our servers. No one ever played with the files or anything. We regularly open it, work with it and close. Now it can't open anymore.

Is there a way to restore the database, what are my options here.

Thank you.

Oracle and Java licencing

A 3rd party has written a Java class which reads from an Oracle database.

They have used free OpenJDK to develop and build.

When they provide us with the class, they say they will not distribute ojdbc8.jar, saying that since we are a licensed Oracle customer, we will have ojdbc8.jar and a JRE with SQL Developer, and that should cover the licensing.

Is this correct?

Oracle Free Tier is a joke

I have been trying for months to create an account, I make sure all info is 100% same with bank and always get rejected at credit card verification. Emailed support multiple times and always get "Unfortunately, we are unable to resolve this. This is all the information we can provide." What is the point of "offering" free services if you gatekeep it at sign up and even if you get lucky and get passed the sign up I hear people being stuck for months before they are able to create a VPS at their home region.

Which programming language should I learn?

Heya! It's me again with more questions 😅.

So, I was looking at internal positions at work for OCI and a majority want someone that has strong programming skills. I've been recreationally doing stuff with Python (small RPG type games for my kids). However, most positions are requiring a Java or C++ programming language instead.

When asked if Python would be acceptable the answer was more or less a no.

So, I'm a bit confused because I always thought that cloud computing used Python as the primary language? If I'm wrong then that's okay. I'm more worried that Java isn't beginnerish friendly. With kids two jobs etc it's already a task to keep up the skills necessary to succeed ya know?

Even then before I go that route is the requirement for Java knowledge just specific to OCI and not necessarily the norm for other cloud based interfaces?

I appreciate y'all's feedback and assistance! Like last month this group helped me out a lot so thank you in advance!

Strapped for time with that long running import ? Try this

I use TOAD to extract the code for any DB object.

The last few steps of import can be done quickly - once the process gets to the CONSTRAINTS section, kill_job via attach session.

Then, take the code for constraints, alter VALIDATE to NOVALIDATE for all, and execute. Obtain SQL for triggers and jobs, and you are done !

No more patching for us, eh ?

Our DBA team manager (small company, they promoted this guy from the APP side) has decided that our 19c databases don't need to be patched. v19.3 is just fine, after we had an export that hung after a patch.

100 other DBs without a problem after patching, and then THAT happened.

No more patching for us ! Sound like a plan ?

Oracle websites down?

I was working in apex.oracle.com and it just went down. After a few minutes of it being unavailable, I wandered to www.oracle.com and found that their main site is down too!

Yikes! That's gotta be embarrassing! :-(

Troubles installing Oracle Instant Client

I'm trying to install Instant Client with Sqlplus and SDK, using these two instructions as reference:
https://apextips.blogspot.com/2019/09/installing-oracle-instant-client-on.html
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Oracle%20Instant%20Client

Using the shell script from the first link, I don't really get much indication if things went ok or not, and I am unable to run sqlplus afterwards (have tried restarting terminal and even system). It just says sqlplus: command not found, so presumably something is wrong with regards to env variables?

With the second link, I have tried multiple RPM downloads invluding 19.23 an 23.4, and installing following the instructions of the second link works fine for basic/basiclite and the sdk, but not for sqlplus, where I get an error regarding RPM:
$ sudo alien -i oracle-instantclient-sqlplus-23.4.0.24.05-1.el9.x86_64.rpm

Warning: Skipping conversion of scripts in package oracle-instantclient-sqlplus: postinst postrm

Warning: Use the --scripts parameter to include the scripts.

Unpacking of 'oracle-instantclient-sqlplus-23.4.0.24.05-1.el9.x86_64.rpm' failed at /usr/share/perl5/Alien/Package/Rpm.pm line 168.

For reference, here is Rpm.pm line 168: $this->do("rpm2cpio '".$this->filename."' | (cd $workdir; $decomp cpio --extract --make-directories --no-absolute-filenames --preserve-modification-time) 2>&1") or die "Unpacking of '".$this->filename."' failed";

First time approaching hierarchical row level security: any hint?

Hi,

two years ago i started my journey in the Oracle world due to the fact that our ERP use Oracle 19c as database, and i discover Apex and started to make some light business application on it.

Now, i'm starting to write down my first big application that involeves some row level security and i'm starting to learn VPD as we are on OCI, so we have EE. I'm pretty unsure how to approach the row level security for an hierarchical autorhization scheme. Sorry if the names are confusing but English is not my primary language and i have a little knowledge to the specific terms as i'm a solo developer started two years ago.

We have this kind of organitazion scheme:

The Ceo has visibility on all, then we have some area managers that will guide/instruct/follow a bunch of salesman each. Each salesman has a pool a clients.

structure

So, CEO will see everything, AREA MANAGER 1 see only client data of SALESMAN 1 and 2.

Client data is about vending orders. Nothing too fancy.

But clients have a second characterization: geographical zones. For example: client 1 zone 1, client 2 zone 1, client 3 zone 2 etc...

If salesman 1 have granted to see all client from zone 1, should see them even if the the client has salesman 2 as agent.

that's what I thought about:

https://preview.redd.it/s68qe4lkqqyc1.png?width=531&format=png&auto=webp&s=25763e52b4408bcccff3bd95f7fe26f8ec2f11cb

I have the AgentID and ManagerID that are FK from tbl_salesmans.AgentID. This should keep it simple becouse i have difficoulties to imagine a hierarchy from my own inexperience. If in the future the tree gains a new level, i will out manager id maybe a a dedicated table.

So translated in the VPD world: the select from tbl_clients will check the salaesman.AgentID against client.AgentID and client.ManagerID. If user CEO = predictate is null so he can see everything,

I'm pretty unsure on how to apply another vpd policy to grant the access by zone zone. I think i need to create multiple VPD policies and merge them with an OR condition, if it is possible.

I would check it but the Burleson Oracle consulting website blog is down by expired certificate... :D

I'm not searching for a writed down solution, so if someone have some interesting video, or blog, or anything that talks about the subject or about designing an application hierarchical security scheme i will appreciate that.

Have a nice day!

Advice for very-low-end hardware… for solaris.

The title says much i think, in short- due to how my life has fallen down, i'm trying my best to save money for a cheep computer from the microcenter (said system is the evolve III); looking at what it has and the system requirements of Solaris (which isn't much & all "normal" computers one can find are all 64-bit these days), and i think it should work if there's nothing fishy with the drivers.

But i'm uncertain to go ahead with this idea of putting Solaris on what is a potato as of today (more wanting to install linux on that evolve III if any of the non-windows options i'm thinking about don't work as there's at least documentation to run linux on those laptops on youTube).

edit: this is for personal use, i don't think anybody would want a 4GB of RAM laptop today for demanding stuff.

Layoff this week

I was previously employed as a Principal Consultant at Oracle Utilities, but after 18 months, I was laid off this week. I'm currently facing numerous rejections with all my job applications and am unsure about the current dynamics in the tech industry. How can I secure a job again? Even no help on the internal roles as well.
