A place for lovers of old-time music.
A place for lovers of American Old-Time music.
Old Time is a specific genre and not just old music.
It generally refers to the dance music and songs that came from the European/African immigrant musicians living in the Southern Appalachians and Ozarks and less commonly other areas around the country. Typically involves a fiddle, banjo, guitars, or just solo ballad singing.
Feel free to post anything old time related especially audio/video of you playing.

I am looking for some new (to me) clawhammer/OT banjo players, from any time. Adam Hurt is my favorite contemporary player.
Who do you guys like?
Found some of recordings for the first time today. He was a smooth player.
Like "cross A" tuning.
In old time music, Are hornpipes the same as a reel? Is it a dance?
I know in Irish music a hornpipe is both a dance and way different than a reel, the most noticeable distinction being the long short pattern of pairs of notes ,even if there notated as equal length, also they have more arpeggio type sequences rather than scale type sequences.
But I'm not sure about old time hornpipes , can anyone enlighten me?
Looking for a gift for a friend’s kid and had the idea to give books that mention old time, instruments, square dancing etc. This family is very musical. So far the only book I can find is “barnyard dance” by Sandra boynton. Does anyone else have any recommendation?
Who doesn’t love a good murder ballad?
Not the best version of Little Birdie ever BUT...
Around the year 1695, my 7th great grandfather arrived in Isle of Wight, VA. He died here but his son went on to Fort Savannah (now Lewisburg, WV) before settling in Carter County Kentucky.
Generations later they moved back to WV and over the course of about 300 years returned to Isle of Wight, when my very own parents and brother moved here unknowing of our genealogical ties to the area. There's even a church that still stands within three miles of my folks place that our 7th great grandfather would have been required to attend at least once a month all those years ago.
This song, Little Birdie, is in many ways a lament to frontier life. Leaving behind all your loved ones and being alone. To bring this song back to Isle of Wight is interesting to me.
Anyway, thanks for reading lol.

I've been listening to a lot of the same music recently, want to switch it up a bit...what are some traditional old-time albums you've been enjoying? For me it's Earl White (eponymous album), rayna gellert's Starch and Iron (I know Ways of the World pretty well but never spent much time with her other old-time album -- kind of wild that she only has two albums of old-time music given how prolific she is!), the Hog-Eyed Man series (Jason Cade and Rob McMaken). What else do you like?
Update: Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! I'm excited to check them all out, and I hope other people got some inspiration from these ideas too.
Play along!!!
