Fentanyl being found in substances in the Okanagan

Anyone who uses any type of a substance (excluding alcohol and weed) please be careful. And carry naloxone. And please no smarty pants in the comments and “ just don’t do drugs”.

Okanagan Similkameen Stewardship

Wood Workers Wanted

OSS is looking for a woodworker to help out on a couple of projects. We are looking for someone to help us cut some composite deck boards and assemble them into Photo Point Monitoring stations, which are just cute little corners you can slide your phone into to take photos from the same point over time. We would supply the deck boards and new saw blades so you don't blunt your own. We are also looking for someone to make some bluebird boxes like the one pictured above, we can provide all the materials but unfortunately not the tools. If you're interested in helping out please send us an email at info@osstewardship.ca or phone us at (236)-235-5242.

Amazing Race Canada

In the latest season, the contestants spent some time in the Okanagan. In Penticton at the Sicamous and The Book Shop. At Area 27 Motorsports Park and Phantom Creek Estates in Oliver. At the Dirty Laundry in Summerland. And at Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre in Osoyoos.

Just a curious, general post if anyone here saw them filming at all or has any tidbits to share?

Which feline vet do you suggest, low cost?

Male cats, both around 2yrs. I often worry too much over little sickness. New to the Okanagan.

Arts-based research opportunity: Contraceptive care

Hi all --

I am a PhD candidate at UBC's School of Nursing and am conducting this research as a part of my dissertation. We are interested in understanding more about the way that we talk about contraceptives and how that might impact contraceptive care. At this time, we are recruiting cisgender women and people who can get pregnant to participate in arts-based research to discuss their experiences with controlling their fertility and/or contraceptive care. Participants will be asked to create a collage related to contraceptive care and experiences which will then guide a one on one virtual interview. Supplies for the collage can be mailed. An honorarium is provided.

Please see the attached poster for more information regarding inclusion criteria and what to do if you are interested. If you have any further questions, please contact me at kermar@student.ubc.ca

Please note: We are also recruiting health care providers that currently prescribe contraceptives in British Columbia. If you are interested in participating as a health care provider, please see the following link.

Electrician jobs in the Okanagan

My husband and I are in the early stages of trying to figure out whether or not a move to the Okanagan would be feasible for us. He currently is making $40 as a residential electrical. He's only been a journeyman for coming up on 2 years, but has recently started working as an electrical foreman.

My questions are, is there much work in the Okanagan area? Is the pay comparable to what he's getting currently? We are looking more into the smaller towns, like Summerland, Penticton, or Lumby. We do understand he may have to work in some of the bigger cities like Kelowna and just commute.

Deciding between moving to Coldstream or Kamloops

My husband and I are from Calgary AB and want to move to BC. We are interested in Vernon (specifically the community of Coldstream) and are considering Kamloops. We are not very interested in Kelowna because of the housing options and how pricey it is. We are used to getting a lot more bang for your buck in AB. Having spent a lot of time in all of these areas in BC we love what they all individually have to offer when it comes to recreation. I am aware of what we will enjoy from each area (we are very outdoorsy). Both our careers will work either place. What I am searching for is potential regrets from each area. For example, quality of school systems and after school sports. Making new friends and establishing yourself in a new community. How exciting it is, Calgary is quite busling and while I crave something smaller I still want to be able to create fun easily. Also I notice people bounce back and forth throughout their lifetime moving from Kamloops to the Okanagan area and am wondering why. What did you crave from either area. Thankyou in advance!!!

What’s the significance of flying the BC flag (by itself)?

I’ve been traveling around the island a lot this summer and i’m seeing a lot of BC flags being flown where i’d normally expect to see a Canadian flag. This seems like a new thing - is this some political statement?

Normally i’d expect the Canadian flag to be flown more commonly or more prominently, but instead I'm seeing the BC flag and no Canadian flag at all

Kelowna barber recommendation

Moved to YLW in 2021, hubby particularly frustrated in finding a good barber.

Has tried several, both fancy and ‘old school’, keeps getting this odd modern look, all floppy on top, shaved sides. Ugh. (Was even ignored once when multiple requests were made to take more off the top - avoid Das Barber in Rutland!)

Just looking for a simple, tidy trim - am beginning to suspect younger barbers don’t really have the skill set, maybe Covid burp, but it’s really frustrating.

Any suggestions welcome!

The stigma of camping with a tent in the Okanagan

Went camping at Lamby lake. We have a system we've been using for years, inflatable boat, 10 person tent. It all fits in the truck, 30 minutes and we're on the road.

I've been noticing that people who have campers and quads are getting more aggressive and behave inappropriately towards us. We had to flee our campsite after a day of intimidation from people on quads, who were coming into our site and doing donuts over 18 times through out the day. One of them said "get a job". I'm a trades person, 15 years now. The irony is that these people need my services, but they say that to my face... while their face is covered by a helmet. I'm starting to think wealthy people in the Okanagan now associate tents with homelessness. From reading their comments on Instagram posts, a lot of them seem to harbour a strong hatred for people who have fallen on hard times. My thoughts are that without their credit cards and lines of credit, they wouldn't be able to survive a bad situation like a homeless person does. They seem to feel it's their right to be aggressive to them because they have more. It's really a toxic mindset that has started seeping into every thing these people do. We ignored the comments and dust the kicked up, because this kind of behavior is becoming a regular occurrence at most of the section 8 campsites.

This time was different because someone fired off 2 large caliber shots at 9:30 at night. We, as the kids say, nopped right on out of there. If you've been the Bear lake, there is no cell service. So leaving in the dark was the best option.

I'm curious to hear from the people who hold these believes about people who camp with tents. Let me know what you think gives you the right to act like this? Are you just "having fun", or do you see yourself as some kind of forest enforcer, protecting your "turf", because I just don't understand.

Does anyone know of a good inexpensive family lawyer?

Does anyone know of a good inexpensive family lawyer (between Vernon and Salmon Arm) that is able to help me draft a 50/50 custody agreement? Ive tried phoning legal aid, and sent them an email, and i havnt received an answer yet. Im planning on going to the courthouse in person to see what they can do. But just wanted some opinions. Mediation will not work.

Motorcycle Riders??

Anyone here in the Okanagan (specifically Oliver area) ride motorcycles and want to meet up and go for a bit of a ride? I'm very new to the area and would love to make some friends and be shown around a bit.

Research study (on UBCO campus) - Detecting lapses in attention while reading using EEG signals

Hi, my name is Eranga De Saa, and I am a graduate student at the University of British Columbia – Okanagan. I am currently studying if by using a 64 channel EEG setup, we are able to measure the focus of the user by analyzing their brainwaves.

We are currently recruiting participants for a study to observe participants’ brainwaves while they engage in a reading task and are exposed to various auditory distractors (background sounds). This study is conducted in person, on UBCO campus.

Please see the research poster for more information, including to see if you qualify, what participation involves, compensation, and for contact information.

This study has received ethics approval (ID #: H22-01988).

Thank you to the moderators of r/okanagan for allowing us to post here.
