Internal Perspective

As someone that is (or was?) interested in working at OHSU when we relocate West to be closer to my wife’s family, I follow OHSU/PDX healthcare news frequently to “stay on top” (the healthcare economy is much different in PDX than my Midwest location). I know all of the big headline events and recent terms/resignations. Engagement scores are terrible and leadership confidence has tanked. What’s going on internally? Is this still a desired employer for those in nursing/clinical professions? If OHSU is traditionally the best - how bad are the competitors right now? I appreciate any shared first or second-hand perspectives.

OHSU & HMC ED wait times

https://www.wweek.com/news/2024/11/27/visit-times-at-several-oregon-emergency-rooms-are-far-longer-than-the-national-average/

"Representatives of both say they’ve implemented new strategies to reduce time spent in the ER. (One of those strategies, OHSU leaders said earlier this year, was sending patients to Hillsboro.)"

RN Nurse Residency

Hey all. I was wondering if anyone could give some insight into the reasoning for the lack of new grad RN positions? I graduate school in a few weeks and was denied from the only 2 openings there were because there were so many applicants. Is it just the time of year/will there be more openings in the summer? Thanks!

Nike Company Store Pass?

Does anyone know if/when Nike Company Store passes will be available to OHSU employees? I know in previous years these were in the month of December.

Standardized Patient Experience?

Anyone work as a Standardized Patient for OHSU and can speak about their experience? I know nothing about it and am not in the medical field, but I'm so curious what that looks like. Any stories or notable encounters? How/why did you end up as an SP? Or for doctors, what have your experiences with SPs been like?

MA positions

Anyone work as an MA for OHSU and can speak about their experience? I tried looking at glass door and indeed and the reviews are so all over the place. Not a single review was written by a MA. I have an interview next week but i work full time somewhere else. Don’t wanna quit one job with pretty decent benefits to a job that has crappy PTO and sick rules

What’s the vibe like in OHSU’s PP and L&D units for nurses?

I’m exploring job opportunities in Portland. I’m an experienced LDRP nurse. Looking to hear from current/past nurses and residents (or really anyone who spends time on these units) what is the culture like? Positive? Negative? Supportive? Curious… thanks for any feedback :)

Toy donation?

My child had surgery at Doernbecher almost a year ago, and the child life specialists were so amazing for our whole family. The toy rooms were especially comforting for my older children. I’m hoping anyone can direct me to information about toy drives if they already do them, or where to find contact info if I was to put together toys they may need for those rooms. Thank you!

OHSU RN, Pediatric Acute Care: Medical vs. Surgical experience

Hello,

I am a new grad nurse and trying to apply for jobs and saw OHSU postings for peds acute care medical and peds acute care surgical. I am wondering what the differences are and if you have any experience working at these units. Do they have good work culture? What are some common pt conditions would you see? What is it like working at a peds acute care floor? Any good/bad experience with the parents?

Pre-screened for 100% financial assistance

I’m an OHSU employee, and I just received a letter from Billing saying that I qualified for 100% financial assistance for the next 365 days. Sounded like an error to me but I called and they said it was legitimate. Said it had to do with House Bill 3320, passed July 1, and was based on an Experian credit check, and doesn’t use income to determine eligibility.

Anyone know anything more about this, and how best I might use this windfall?

Research Union contract negotiations

Anybody have thoughts on what researchers might expect in terms of pay increases if the union is able to negotiate some kind of deal? I’d have to think there’d be increases because otherwise what’s the point of the union.

Vaccination booster clinic alternatives

I’m traveling to Hawaii in mid-October. Employee Health vaccinations don’t start until the 7th, and I’d like to give it a little more time to get settled before I hop on a plane. Does any employee with Moda health insurance get their vaccines somewhere besides Employee Health?

OHSU Critical Care Interview

Hi! Experience ICU nurse here. I have an upcoming interview for one of the ICU's at OHSU. I was wondering if anyone had any tips/insight into the interview process and the adult critical care cluster evaluation. Also, any thoughts regarding the culture at OHSU, specifically critical care, would be greatly appreciated!

OHSU Fertility Consultants and Spring Fertility

Heyo, I underwent fertility treatments with OHSU fertility consultants and had success in 2022. I've since moved out of the area, but just received a message in MyChart saying that OHSU is partnering with Spring Fertility and that OHSU won't be providing certain services anymore. After more research it sounds like they are actually going to be leasing providers to Spring, along with laying off a bunch of OHSU employees. Some of the reasoning given has been the waitlist, but I don't understand how this is actually going to reduce the waitlist for these services, especially if they are reducing the number of employees. I guess Spring will hire their own employees, probably for much less that OHSU was paying the employees that are being laid off?. The change would not have affected our treatment plan, but it sounds like a lot of people will be affected and will have to switch to Spring for future treatments.

I guess what I'm curious about is what everyone else thinks about this? I'm done building my family, but affordable access to care it still something I care a lot about. Looking into it is kind of giving me an icky feeling that this will not actually be in the patients best interests. OHSU is one of the more affordable places to pursue treatment, and it sounds like Spring will not comment on what their prices will be in comparison. Is this as icky as it appears?

Question about ICU ceilings

So a couple months ago I spent a couple weeks in the ICU at OHSU. I spent some time in a coma and was pretty out of it when I came to. As I think back I realize that a lot of my memories of my time there were probably imagined. I am quite certain that I imagined doctors, nurses, and whole conversations. Heck, I have memories of asking doctors if something had really happened or if I imagined it and now I'm pretty sure I also imagined asking them.

One thing I remember with great frequency is there being some sort of display in the ceiling with some sort of animated owl face or something similar. It reminded me of a tamogotchi (those old Japanese keychain pets from the 90s).

Now reading what I just wrote above sounds absurd to me, and yet I feel compelled to ask because I feel like I remember seeing it every day. Was I crazy or was there really some sort of digital owl looking at me from the ceiling?

Condo for Rent - by 405/Hwy 26 and PSU

Hi everyone! We are renting our 2BR/2BA by Portland State/downtown - the ask is $2100. Up the hill from the PSU campus and a close drive to OHSU on SW Hall (turn onto 14th Street from Montgomery). We loved this condo and our neighbors, but a relocation to the midwest required we move.

We are offering a move-in of $1000 for the first month, and tenants are allowed to paint the unit as we see fit (we understand the colors are not everyone's jam), along with helping to offset the cost of painting.

This is a 2BR, 2BA with an excellent kitchen, secured garage parking, a storage unit, secure entry, a private covered patio, AND a rooftop deck with a hot tub. The community is small - 15 units including this one - and very caring and supportive.

Please click on the link and if you have any additional questions, feel free to PM me.
