Marine hatchetfish are creatures of the deep. They have rows of light-producing organs along their bellies which shine a pale blue — matching the light from above and making hatchetfish invisible to predators below. This fish's name comes from its body shape, which resembles the head of a hatchet.

Lacklustre big jellyboy found off PNW coast

There were a few of them. Lethargic and about the size of a car tire...

Wondering what species! Fried Egg or another species?

Creature ID

I hauled my boat today in Halifax, NS, Canada, so I could inspect and clean the hull before heading south for the winter. There was a ton of these little scorpion creatures! I’ve never seen them before, does anyone know what they are?

More active sand dollars 💜

Since you guys enjoyed my clip last night of that live sand dollar moving, here’s a little compilation of a few more active ones from the last couple days out at the negative tides in Pismo. I’ve really loved sharing my finds with you all recently! I’m new to the group. While the low Pismo tides are fun, I have more fun exploring the local tide pools. Unfortunately they’re not having any negative tides right now but when they do I’ll be back with some starfish and other tide pool finds ❤️

Cont from my post yesterday about the unknown creature in PB… kinda nsfw?? 😅😅😅

Thanks for all the help yesterday in identifying the Pismo Clams under the sand with their siphons exposed. I learned a lot! I went back the next day during the negative tide and I got a much clearer picture of what was happening. I feel weird having this on my phone and even weirder posting it here 😅😅 but it was too cool not to share! Thanks again for all the information ❤️

Japan is trying to extradite whale warrior Paul Watson for the crime of (checks notes) being against whale murder. If they succeed, it's a blow against conservationists, animal rights, and protestors everywhere. You can help, though.

Here's a great and hilarious video that explains the situation much better than I can:

Here's a link to the petition to increase public pressure on Denmark to release him: https://www.paulwatsonfoundation.org/freepaulwatson/

Don't let me down, fellow ocean nerds!

Help figuring out what happened to me in the ocean today

Ok, so I was wading in shallow water in the ocean in Gulf Shores, AL earlier today. I went to get down on my knees and as soon as my knee touched the sand I felt a painful sensation that I can only describe as pulses or vibration maybe? It’s very hard to describe, but it hurt immediately and almost felt like something was sucking me knee in and it took me a second to get up. I screamed immediately from the pain and thought I must have been stung by a jellyfish, but soon after standing up my knee felt ok and I didn’t see any marks. It was by the far the scariest incident to ever happen to me on the ocean and I can’t figure out what could have caused it. I felt something moving in the sand so it had to be some sort of creature, right? Idk. I feel crazy trying to describe it to people and google isn’t help. So if you know what this could be please let me know!
