A Subreddit for locals, tourists, and businesses on the Outer Banks of North Carolina!

Welcome to the Outer Banks subreddit.

This subreddit is dedicated to local news, updates, photos, and more relating to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We strive to create a community that helps any visitor or resident of the islands communicate with each other. We love to see beautiful photos and videos, and encourage healthy communication between our members to help find local events and goings-on.

  • If you're a tourist to the islands, welcome! We're currently working on a tourist guide to the islands to help you find your way around. If you have any questions about the islands or you want to share photos from your trip, please do!

  • If you're a local, we love having your expertise around. Having active locals on the sub helps our visitors find interesting things to do and see around the islands. Also, things can tend to die down during the off season as we all know, so we hope to make this community a place to find local friends during the slow seasons.

  • If you're a business representative, feel free to post from time to time to let everyone know what's going on! If you're having a sale or event, please do let everyone know about it. All that we ask is that you refrain from posting too frequently and spamming the subreddit with ads. Please try to be courteous and post ads no more than once every few weeks. We also ask that you participate in the community in order to help locals and tourists in the area learn more about the history of the island as well as what's available.

If anyone has any questions or concerns about what content is allowed, or even just wants to talk shoot a message to one of the moderators and we'd be glad to assist you.

This subreddit is moderated by a group of locals from Hatteras Island that hope to bridge the communication gap and make a great environment for everyone to share their wonderful experiences on The Outer Banks.

Kill Devils Hill in March

Hello! A large group of friends (15 women) will be in Kill Devils Hill in early March. The affordability of the AirBnB beat the weather in this case. Any help with off season group activities? I’ve considered the options for jeep/wild horse tours and Sanctuary Winery in Jarvisburg. Thanks in advance!

Corolla property ownership

Looking to purchase a vacation rental at The Currituck Club. Good idea? Have stayed down there for decades and am finally at the point of doing something that my daughter and granddaughter can enjoy once I’m out of the picture😂

Christmas in Corolla

My family and I will be spending Christmas in Corolla, it's our first visit to OBX. We are looking for recommendations for a place to have Christmas dinner in the area, or a bit north or south. Doesn't have to be traditional. Just a place that 8 of us can go and not have to cook.

Thanks in advance, super excited to get up there!

20 Day Holiday Cost

I’m planing a vacation in obx for 20 days with my 3 friends. We’re planing to go in September 2025. We don’t want anything luxury. Just a place to sleep (probably Airbnb) and a pickup truck. I did some research and find some places for 3k and a truck for 1k. Don’t have any problem at this point but we’re from Europe and don’t know anything about local prices etc. We will make our food ourselves and mostly avoid restaurants. We will use truck so much for the whole trip cuz we enjoy exploring literally every corner where we go. I’d love to learn how much will groceries, gas, beers (and maybe some surfing lessons) cost for 20 days. If it exceeds 4k per person than we should start saving asap lol

Winter camping at Cape Hatteras

I'm looking into camping at Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Oregon Inlet or Ocracoke) in late December. I've never been to the North Carolina coast or gone beach camping before. Longer tent stakes come to mind. Can anyone provide anything to consider or suggestions?

Biking through towns

My wife and I are staying in Waves for a couple of weeks, but are planning to take our E-bikes north today to see the Duck to Nags Head area. Any recommendations on where I can park and start biking? Ideally looking to see some of the cool local stuff, have some coffee, food and maybe some beer during different stops.

Any less crowded beaches?

We are looking to vacation in OBX in August. We have previously stayed in Carova and loved it. However, not everyone in our group has 4x4 so we are looking to book a house somewhere else. We are not familiar with the other area and are open to anything. Can anyone please give us a suggestion as to what area is less crowded, more secluded. We don’t need restaurants or activities. Just looking to relax at the beach. Thank you!

Want to live and work in OBX in the off season only. Where should I work?

Good afternoon yall. I am hoping to live and work in OBX in the off-season only. I actually already have the housing worked out.

Is there work in the off season? I was thinking about maybe the warehouse in Manteo? My other thoughts were maybe a fish house?

Vacation with kids

We’ll be taking my nieces on their first ever vacation next summer down to Southern Shores. As we don’t usually bring kids with us and typically just relax at the beach house we’re not entirely sure of the kid friendly sights/activities.

What are the top 5 things to do/see with two 8 year olds?

Working / living on Roanoke island?

Curious how many people who work on the island / in wanchese also live there?

I was recently offered a job in wanchese that I would be relocating from central NC for. When I was last talking to the company they said that pretty much everyone there lives on the island and that you wouldn't want to commute from mainland.

Is this pretty accurate? I've been commuting 30-45 minutes each way to work for the past 10 years and it seems like pretty much anywhere on Roanoke is within 15 or 20 minutes from this company. But that living nearby on the mainland could save me quite a bit of money in housing while still being within 30 minutes or so.
