I'm new to civil service jobs, have been working in the field for almost a year. So I'm at new hire salary. I've seen another position within same agency, different division but same title. I'm wondering if it's worth to apply for this position. Will I get more money? Based on the description the job is higher in responsibilities. Also, when I will get an incumbent raise?
Hey guys,
I have worked some early voting days but I don’t think I can work on the Election Day. It’s because I have a premature baby who is currently in the hospital. If I don’t see her for one day, it drives me crazy (motherly instincts are strong 😔)
And Election Day is way too long. I have worked as a poll worker for about 4 years now.
If I don’t work on the Election Day, is it true that I won’t be given any days for future elections ?
Hello,
Has anyone submitted a claim for their dental work for a non dc371 union participating dentist? How long did the check take to arrive or obstacles? Thank you.
"Non-participating dentists have no agreement with the Fund and must be paid by the member. If you select a non-participating dentist, you will be responsible for all payments to the non-participating dentist. You will be reimbursed by check directly from the Fund according to the Fund’s Schedule of Dental Benefits. The difference between the non-participating dentists’ fees and the Funds payment is your out-of-pocket expense. A complete, updated listing of the Schedule of Dental Benefits can be obtained from the Fund Office or on the Union’s website at www.mightyunion.org. In addition, the Schedule of Benefits is published annually in September in the Summary of Benefits section of The Unionist."
Hello! I was wondering if anyone could offer insight as to how the speculation process for this test works? Do you get to pick which department you go in to based on your score? Or is it chosen for you? If anyone has any advice for studying material, that would be greatly appreciated. Tips from people already in this field would also be appreciated, I’m implying looking in to my different options with city jobs and want to know if this is worth it to pursue.
Good morning, it's me again. I am planning to quit my NYCHA job and apply for a new one. I don't want to quit without having a new job. And I really hate to continue to work for NYCHA. But Sadly, this job pays a little decent for someone at my current stage in life. I can't afford an extreme pay cut. After checking the available jobs, there aren't many paying what I make to someone with no degree without taking an exam
Im looking to be advised. I see a few jobs within NYCHA I can try and apply for. Should I add this current NYCHA job to the resume? I did have a good relationship ship with my direct super bio but she's been demoted because she sticks up for me at work and now she doesn't speak. Which is fine. Not here to make girlfriends, but now I have no reference for this current job. Thank you
Does anyone know whether the supervisor would be informed that the employee is trying to leave (informally or formally?
If I switch from a city agency to another city agency does my vacation time, sick time and comp time transfer over or would I lose it? Should I use it before I transfer? For example if I switch from MTA NYCT to DEP/DOT/DDC or vice versa?
What’s the best health insurance to pick ? Any suggestions for a single healthy man
Hi to the group! Tier sixer here… Question about (possibly) leaving after hitting the ten year mark and making sure I qualify for the free medical benefits at 63 (city employee). I’ve heard rumors that if you leave right at ten years you may come up short as there needs to be some sort of buffer that covers vacation or other time off. Does anyone know more about this or about how many extra weeks/months you need to have in order to make sure it’s counted as the full ten? Thank you!
So, I’ve seen other posts about this (nice to know I’m not alone here), but haven’t found a solution yet.
Basically, I accidentally signed up for the NYCERS pension, not knowing that just creating an account would enroll me into the pension. How can I terminate my account and get a refund of the contributions I’ve made already, while I’m still employed at my job?
Looks like the refund application requires you to input a date of termination from your employer. The call center is very unhelpful! Please help! lol
So the title is pretty much self explanatory I do not think I’d remain in city service for this long but here I am I am not enrolled the pension. I’m typically optimistic about the market and the pension seem like such a bad deal having to contribute through my entire career.
Does it make sense to enroll in the pension now ? I really don’t see myself working for the city for the next 20 years, but I know that if I enroll, I will buy my time and vest and would at the bare minimum have an Incentive to stay for another five years for the health insurance benefits.

I'm a longtime CUNY employee, enjoy my job and colleagues. In light of the recent arrests of PSC members and our latest contract chicanery though, I have to ask why we are the Chum Bucket of NYC civil service.
One look at the PSC titles, and we know the problem can't be CUNY alone. Higher Education Officer titles get annual raises up to a generous cap, and most colleagues are earning more than us at similar education & experience levels. The problem isn't civil service alone either. The mayoral agencies got their raises and retro a year ago already. We don't even have a pay date yet, and none of our locals have any answers for us. Why is CUNY civil service in particular such a toxic combination for our bargaining power?
The answer seems obvious to me - we should demand that CUNY civil service titles be folded into PSC, along with our non-teaching instructional staff colleagues. The PSC have the faculty, and like it or not those are the only staff members that CUNY cares about. Bargaining separately from the faculty, we have no bargaining power at all with CUNY execs. I know our locals are opposed to this and want to remain under DC37, but are they simply self-serving or do they have legitimate reasons for not folding us into the PSC instead? Interested to hear people's thoughts on this.
Has any one successfully used the ortho benefit for adult Invisalign . One rep told me there is no differentiation between braces and ortho for the 6k benefit and another told me only braces pay the max . Additionally the rep said the treatment has to be no less than 24 months , that doesn’t make sense but I get insurance isn’t logical.
My ortho said my treatment plan is 12 months.
I don't want to risk going to a bad dentist. Anyone have any experience with them? Reviews on google don't look promising.
I'm currently employed with Mayoral Agency A. I have accepted an offer from Mayoral Agency B, but as everyone knows the OMB approval process is taking forever. In the meantime, I have just received an offer from State Agency X. As this is a State Agency, they have given me a potential start date and there is no coordination between them and Mayoral Agency A. I could start right away. Would it be unwise to take the job with State Agency X while waiting for the OMB approval from Mayoral Agency B? Once the OMB approval comes through I would leave State Agency X and go to Mayoral Agency B (which is the place I really want to work at). I'm concerned particularly about any implications with my permanent civil service title and pension (I'm 9 years in and would be stupid not to get vested after 10). Let me know your thoughts - thanks!
I've been browsing NYC's job listings and noticed some frustrating limitations. It seems impossible to sort positions by date, salary, or even title, which makes the search process really time-consuming. I have tried sorting by City of New York in the last 14 days on Indeed however, no jobs show up. I've heard a lot of complaints about the new website, but is there any workaround to actually see the latest postings? Has anyone managed to find a way to filter or sort effectively?
Appreciate any tips or suggestions. Thanks in advance!
I was wondering if anyone in here has a more direct translation of when the city actually does the military pay "top up" after the 210hrs of military leave. Its looking like I'm going to need to go to school for a couple months. Also, if anyone in the DEP knows how I can get ahold of the military liaison, I'd appreciate the info
Hi! I'm hoping to figure out an issue I'm having with NYCAPS. I've tried to get support from NYCAPS directly and HR at the city agency but no luck so far.
I accepted a conditional offer and was told to complete e-hire documents on NYCAPS/ESS. My account appears stuck in time to when I held a temporary city job over 10 years ago. None of the documents I'm expecting to complete as part of the e-hire paperwork for this new city role is there.
I've mentioned this to NYCAPS, they told me that HR at the city agency I have the offer from has to fix it (by releasing my e-hire docs to my ESS). HR at the city agency has said they put a ticket in to NYCAPs to fix this.
I feel stuck in this circular loop trying to figure this out and it's preventing this onboarding process from moving forward until I can complete this e-hire step. Has anyone had this issue before? Any tips?
As the title asks. I just got an offer for an attorney position with the state (one of the agencies). They said they'd likely have to hire me at the minimum of the range because I haven't worked for the state before. However, they said they'd look into whether my City service (8 years) would be credited so I could go higher. Anyone have any experience with this? The difference between minimum and maximum is roughly $30k. Even half that would be big. Thanks in advance.
I currently have the Emblemhealth GHI-CBP basic at no charge. My husband and I are middle aged and we have 4 children, 2 in out of state colleges. Should I get the Emblemhealth GHI-CBO with carve out rider? I’m getting different opinions. Concerned with our advanced age and children traveling out of state - is the carve out rider better protection? Thank you.
I applied for a civil exam a few months ago, but got an email over the summer that it was cancelled. The email contained info to request a refund, but apparently I emailed this request a few days late (I get lazy with my inbox over the summer 🤷🏻♀️).
OASys has said they won’t refund me because I emailed too late, and my bank won’t dispute the charge because it was an ACH transaction. I just want my $85 back, money is tight out here!
Has anyone been through this? Is there any way I may be able to convince them to refund me, or should I just bite my tongue and move on?
How much paid time off do you get per year with the current contract? I recently got called in but I wanna know what I'm getting into before I make a decision.
So I am starting next month and realized that my psychiatrist doesn't accept most of the city plans. Does anyone have any recommendations for which of the insurance plans would be best to see a psychiatrist, or any recommendations for one that takes one of the city plans like metroplus or emblem health? I really just need refills of one medication and I'm worried about starting and having it run out while I sort this.
City agency is paying 48k- in person full time Non profit is paying 60k- hybrid
I love the city for its stability but I have bills to pay and I would love some work life balance. I do wanna goto grad school and plan to go back to the city.
I have previous city government 3 years experience but just don’t know what to choose.
Please weight in and give me your 2 cents.
Thank you in advance
EDIT 1:
The non profit is paying 3k of annual reimbursement of health insurance per year of premiums for health insurance of my choice.
Hi I am a city employee in NYC and open enrollment is coming up. Has anyone had a great experience with a covered insurance plan for midwife and home delivery for pregnancy services?
hello. Ive asked for guidance on this once before but now I'm wondering if there's any other jobs in NYCHA hiring. I have 3 years of relatable community job experience. 3 years of college education. And amazing references I just started at NYCHA back in June. This is by far the worse job I've ever had. And I worked at McDonalds and PINK back in my teens. The administrator is HORRIBLE. The boss over her head is even worse. A lot of unauthorized decisions are being made by my administrator and her boss isn't checking it. In fact, she turns a blind eye to it all. I've been seeing a therapist and taking my anti depressants again ever since starting this job.
The only reason I don't leave today and I mean right this second is because it's easy work and semi decent pay. I didn't have to take an exam or have a degree. But it's not worth my mental health. I hate to see their faces. My direct boss and the other works are too scary to confront admin. They rather sit around and talk about her when she's not around. It's sad really. All my life I was told this is how kids behave. I'll be 30 very soon and the "adults" are far worse than any tadpole drama I've ever witnessed in highschool. PLEASE DONT ask me any snarky, stupid, assumption based or self explained questions. Some of you are so quick to be funny, and failing at it, that you sound mentally strained. Please be tactful. I don't play games.
Let’s say a City worker needs to use FMLA-what are the next steps to getting ST disability benefit and how much does is it pay? What’s the process? TIA
We got the digital time clock operational this should be fun right?
