Name and artwork change

Nyancoin has used certain rainbow related artwork since it's inception 9 years ago.

In January 2023, the owner of that artwork requested that it be removed, and this request has been complied with.

Nyancoin is now known as KatKoyn. The blockchain is unchanged, as are all previous transactions, addresses, wallets and network operations.

Websites and artwork are currently being updated, so things may not appear exactly as their final versions for some time. External websites will still refer to Nyancoin until they are updated by whoever maintains them.

What this means

• The network and the most recent v2.3 software is still operational, this will be revised shortly to replace any artwork and names with new ones.
• All existing wallets are still valid, including those on software and paper.
• Addresses and private keys are unchanged, everything still works as before.
• All that has changed is the name and artwork - nothing else.

The upgrade to AuxPow is completed. AuxPow is active from block height 4574574, which occurred at about 14:32 on 11 January 2023.

All versions v2.2 and below will NOT connect to the main network, currently only v2.3 is supported.

If you are still running an older version, please upgrade to v2.3 - this only involves replacing the binary. Blockchain files, wallet and others are all compatible. All files here: https://github.com/nyancoin-official/nyancoin-client/releases

For v1.x upgrading is still possible, however this will involve reindexing the blockchain files. This will happen automatically but is likely to take several hours.

Note that mining against a version v2.2 and older will create an unsupported fork, and anything on that fork will not exist on the main chain. Currently all major mining pools are on v2.3 other than gigahash.net and pool.scrypt.ovh/nyan/public/ - if you are using those please move to another pool.

New version v2.3 has arrived. Upgrading to this version is required to ensure certain AuxPow features work correctly.

Older versions v2.2 and below will be disconnected by v2.3 in the near future, therefore it is essential that everyone upgrades to the new v2.3 as soon as possible.

Replacing the binary file is the only change required - wallet file, blockchain files and others are all compatible, no other changes are required. You should of course make backups of wallet.dat before this and any other changes.

Nyancoin delivery

A couple of peers reporting as v1.x have been seen intermittently on the network over the past few weeks.

For anyone still running or attempting to run old version 1.x, please upgrade to v2.3.

v1.x is not supported and will have problems with blocks created by v2.x. There is no fix for this.

Please do not spend any time or effort attempting to resolve problems with v1.x as all of it will be wasted.

Moving from v1 to v2 can take several hours as the blockchain files need to be converted to a new format. v2.3 will do this automatically, how long it takes depends on system capabilities.

However this only needs to be done once - future upgrades from v2.x to another v2.x only require replacement of the software, all file formats are the same so no conversion is required. Startup time is the same as restarting using the same version.

You should of course make a backup of wallet.dat regularly and before making changes to anything.

wallet.dat is compatible between v1.x and v2.x, no changes are required unless you have compiled the software using a custom version of BerkeleyDB. If that has been done, you will have to use the same version of BerkeleyDB when compiling, otherwise you will get 'wallet corrupt' when starting. Alternatively export all of the keys using the old version, and then import those keys into a new wallet created by v2.x

Does anyone know how to increase the speed of the synchronization? My wallet's eta is saying 14 weeks to synchronize with the network.

Due to several bugs in the AuxPow versions released recently, please continue to use v2.0 until notified otherwise.

If you have installed v2.1.1 or v2.1.2, please remove this and replace with the previous v2.0

v2.1.2 does not work when syncing the chain from the start, and is not likely to work properly after block height 4477744.

I've been promising Daniel to write an update forever.

First off, as always, I want to thank everyone doing the actual work to keep this all going.

I've been enjoying the time off. I quit my day job as well in the meantime. I got married, and we have bought a house and gotten a kitten as well! Between my honeymoon with my beautiful wife and learning how to live with our young calico cat, we've been staying busy.

I can't see Nyan in the mobile app from AtomicDEX. Why is that?

There is ongoing fraud in NYAN trading. I had been wanting to cone back and tell you all the great news in my personal life since I have been away, but I was foolish enough to fall for the currently promoted exchange's fake volume, which is apparently a requested feature rather than even just something that Daniel, at least, knew about, that instead of a hugely positive "misadventures of Coinaday " update, I am here incoherently angry about how the subreddit I loved so much is promoting lies.

This is not who I am, and I am disappointed that the goal of getting listed on CMC was considered worth taking these "shortcuts".

Let us not be euphemistic, however. Lying in the course of promoting something you want to sell is fraud. It's a crime, and there's a reason it is. It's immoral and it erodes the foundation of trust which needs to underlie any financial instrument or even gamble.

We have magical internet fun money. We will take Elon Musk's money if he wants to spend a million dollars. But what we won't do is tell lies by having false trading history posted and endorse it for anyone who comes along.

I always made the risks document my focus because I felt that honesty and full disclosure should come first, even if it meant I never made any money. But when I walk away, one of the people I left in charge replaces honest disclosure with fraudulent deception because, supposedly, no one would fall for it.

Well, I fell for it. And I don't think it's right. And I think people should know.

I'm disappointed and frankly furious. Everyone who thought this was fine should consider whether "fun, self-improvement, and service to others" means anything to you.

I tried to go minimal with ads to not make it a bad experience and i am aware on mobile it doesnt look too great but it still works as intended and i might put something better looking in the future when i have time.

Right now the payouts are between 0.2 and 0.1 NYAN every 4 minutes however this will most likely change in the future depending on the price of nyan, right now it's quite high just as a newcomers bonus i guess, extra free coins, why not?

At approximately 16:15Z on 12 July 2022, the 3 visible nodes running older v1.x disappeared from the network. The error message from one of those was:

Db::put: Cannot allocate memory

The exact cause of this is not known, but it is a problem which has occurred with many other cryptocurrencies where older versions are used on newer blockchains. In this particular example, the cause was not a lack of memory or disk space. It's more likely that a block at or around that time contained something which was incompatible with v1.x or a library used to compile it.

The most obvious fix for this is to upgrade to v2. There may be other ways to fix this and continue using v1.x, but given the extreme age of the v1.x code, and that there are several other known incompatibilities, and the problem could be caused by multiple items including external libraries, no further time will be expended on it.

At the time of this post, about 20 hours later, there are still no v1.x nodes visible on the network, so it can be assumed that the failure was due to some incompatibility in a block created by a v2.x node somewhere.

Is there anyway to sell Nyan coins?

I will no longer be associated with Nyancoin in any capacity, effective immediately.

You all are of course free to do whatever you like, but as I leave I recognize jwflame as overall leader of the project, shinohia AKA bigstevec as core developer, and Daniel Kon as ambassador / PR contact for anything external.

A brief note on why I am leaving now. We obviously had a chain split between the new clients. This was something which was recognized as theoretically possible but I at least had thought we had considered in the design. In my design proposal, I had specifically included a 30 minute delay before kicking in the re-org protection, but if I recall correctly this was not included in the final design.

I want to be clear that I am not criticizing the choice of design. But what I am criticizing is our core developer acting like there is no conceivable question about the design of the core clients in conjunction with this serious issue we had.

But he matters more than I do, so I will leave and he can be the BOFH as he likes.

Just note that in my opinion there is a serious issue with the core client and while the stated position of the developer is that this is simply how PoW is and there is nothing to do about it. Okay, so be it. I would have preferred a technical discussion about trade-offs in design, with reference to the previous design proposal, but clearly no one cares and prefer to pretend like there is nothing we could have done differently in the code.

Technical differences in approach and trade-offs for how to address this are to be expected. Denying even the possibility of there being an issue in the code to address is such a fundamental difference of perspective that I see nothing further to discuss.

I have some slight pride in where this community and coin have come since I arrived. Things seem to be in slightly better shape. I had a little bit of fun and I made some money. I have done none of the work, but perhaps I occasionally encouraged some of it.

At this point, it's pretty clear that no one wants me here and I don't want to be here, so I'll leave you all to it.

For reasons not yet determined, some v2.0 clients are on a shorter chain with a lower difficulty.

If the height and difficulty on your client does not match this, you are very likely on a separate fork. This may also show as your client never advancing from a particular block height.

Resyncing to the network can be done in several ways:

1 - Disconnect and reconnect to the network. In the desktop graphical client this can be done by clicking the small icon bottom right of the window to disconnect, waiting a minute or so, and then clicking again to reconnect.

2 - Exiting and then restarting should have the same effect, which will work for both desktop and command line versions.

3 - Exiting the Nyancoin Core software completely, and then restarting with the additional command line options:

-reindex -connect=46.235.227.47

which will reindex and connect to the block explorer which should be on the correct chain.

For Windows, this is done by opening a command prompt in the directory where nyancoin-qt.exe is located and typingnyancoin-qt.exe -reindex -connect=46.235.227.47

Or if using a shortcut to start the program, right click the shortcut, select Properties, and add the -reindex -connect=46.235.227.47 in the 'Target' box after nyancoin-qt.exe

For sending, receiving and using AtomicDex, it's essential that everyone is on the same chain, otherwise losses will occur.

If mining, please check which chain you are mining on - any mining on a separate fork will result in everything mined being lost.
