Stolen Packages

Hi everyone, I just moved to NWI this summer and I have lived in rural country all my life so this is a big switch. I have never once had a package stolen out of all my years of living in the country, but all of sudden once I moved to the city, I get my packages stolen. I had a neighbor that also said she had her package stolen the same day mine was. I got the notification and a picture it was delivered and went to go get my package less than a minute after the delivery notification and it was gone. I live in an apartment and they said there was nothing they could do about it. Do you guys have any suggestions on what I should do to prevent this? Does this happen to you?

Anyone know where to get pickled herring for new years?

Its a family tradition before ya judge. What i mean is like smaller containers than the small Vitas one. I feel the container goes bad before I can eat it. 😅

Photography locations in the winter

I’m looking for some good locations in nwi for an outdoor photoshoot coming up next month. It’s my first outdoor session as a beginner photographer in the cold weather and any locations/hidden gems would be appreciated.

In Northwest Indiana, a handful of movie theaters offer regular open caption (on-screen subtitles) screenings.

These Northwest Indiana movie theaters have regular open caption (on-screen subtitles) screenings (maybe there are more, don't know). The open caption screenings are limited - usually just one out of all the screenings.

  • Portage: Emagine Portage
  • Schererville: AMC Schererville

Open captions aren't only for deaf and hard of hearing people. Open captions can also benefit people with autism, attention deficit disorder, auditory processing disorder, aphasia, kids learning to read, adults learning English as a second language, noise sensitive, challenges understanding actors. And many young people like captions.

Theaters do have closed caption devices, but many people do not like those devices for multiple reasons.

As an example, the Emagine Portage has two open caption screenings (out of 15 total) of Moana 2 tomorrow (Sunday), and AMC Schererville has one today (Saturday) out of 26 total and one tomorrow (Sunday) out of 25 total.

Irish Pubs in NWI

Anyone know of any good Irish pubs in the region? Feels like we’re lacking, but maybe I’m just out of the loop.

Beloved 'Tamale Man' dies, remembered as Region fixture of a bygone era

The "Tamale Man," a beloved Region fixture who sold tamales late at night outside Northwest Indiana bars, has died.

Miguel Lopez DeLeon, a South Chicago resident, died Monday at the age of 80, according to his obituary. He was known across the Calumet Region as the Tamale Man or the Tamale Guy for selling homemade tamales outside bars in Northwest Indiana and the Illinois south suburbs. He provided warm sustenance to many Region residents after tipsy nights of bar-going.

"I met tamale man like eight years ago. He came into our bar one day and asked me if I wanted to shoot a game of pool. I said yeah, and he introduced me to himself as a tamale man. He had one of the best tamales around the Region," said Sam Leonhardt, the owner of Bank Shots Bar and Grill in Lynwood. "He was a very kindhearted guy. He always talked about his family and everything and he always had good stories. He’s going be missed so much by a lot of people."

Tributes poured out on social media.

"Miguel was a fixture in the Region, stopping in all the bars to sell tamales made by his beloved mamacita for all to enjoy," the VFW post in Calumet City posted online. "He was a hell of a pool player, too. Always a gentleman with kind words for all even, if you didn’t purchase any tamales that particular time. He’ll be missed. Miguel was a positive carryover from a bygone era."

Info About New Carlisle

Does anyone have any info on New Carlisle? I have an interview in a couple weeks for a job out there. I was also wondering what the apartment scene is like because it seems pretty scarce from checking online.

Indiana Dunes National Park's Douglas Center reopens after 1.5 years after pedestrian bridge was rebuilt

The Indiana Dunes National Park's Douglas Center reopened after a 1.5-year closure after the pedestrian bridge over Lake Street reopened.

The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education at 100 N Lake St in Gary's Miller neighborhood has only been open for weekend events and programs while the bridge to the larger parking lot across the street was torn down and rebuilt. It serves as the gateway to the western edge of the Indiana Dunes National Park, Northwest Indiana's biggest tourism attraction that draws millions of visitors a year to see its sand dunes, beaches and other habitats.

The environmental education center, named after the Illinois senator who helped save the Indiana Dunes and create the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, sits at the entrance to the Paul H. Douglas Trail, which runs through globally rare oak and savannah habitat through the Miller Woods.

The Douglas Center features educational exhibits, a Nature Play Zone for kids, live animals and a space to do nature-based arts and crafts. It offers programming, such as lectures and ranger-guided hikes. It serves as a basecamp for hiking the woods and wetlands, kayaking in the Miller Lagoon and doing cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.

The Douglas Center for Environmental Education will again regularly host public programming for local residents and visitors to the National Park, as well as school children going on field trips to ranger-led education programs.

Angel’s Cash for Gold in Dyer has great Google reviews

Over and over previous customers are saying good things about how they were treated and they were paid fair prices for their gold and silver. Traditional Pawn shops have always been known for cutthroat pricing. Be careful

Water Notice

Just got a letter from CUII-Twin Lakes that they haven't testes the water for TTHM and HAA5. I know nothing about these chemicals or any other home owning environmental hazards, so now I'm freaked out. What else do I have to worry about? I just seen that my house has a radon pipe and now I'm scared of that thing too. Can an expert educate me on these things so I can freak out in a good way and attend to them?

Considering moving to Hammond

Currently staying in Chicago on the south side with family moved up here because I got a job in East Chicago. I don’t have a place of my own yet but a few people have recommended Hammond to live because of the short commute. I’m 24 year old so I like going out every now and then. Just looking for insight on the city to see if I should stay in the city or move out to Hammond.

Window pricing

Looking to replace the windows and sliding glass door in my house, wondering what people are paying for this so I have an idea. One bay window and 8 regular windows in a home around 2,000 SF. Anyone have a ballpark? And a rec on a company to do it? Thanks!
