/r/nommit
Nomic is a game where the defining game element is the ability to change any and all of the rules. Nomics can have many forms. Come see what ours looks like!
This game is dead right now. You can attempt to restart it, or you can find another nomic. A live game is Now We Nomic, on Discord.
A curated list of Active Nomic games.
/r/nommit
I am thinking of setting up a minecraft server using Nomic rules. Does anyone have experience doing something similar?
Hello to everyone still subscribed here! This is the Active Nomic List. The last edition of this newsletter was published in September 2021, posted after an explosive burst of new nomic games. A few more developments have arisen since then; thus I am publishing this new edition in case this information is useful to anyone else.
Played on Mailing Lists
The longest surviving nomic on the web. Known for its complex economic subgames and their integrations with the rest of the game.
Discord server for game discussion.
Played on a Mailing List
A nomiclike game older than Agora with gameplay focusing on rule-writing with increasing restrictions.
Currently in round 375. Theme: Care and Feeding of New Beginnings
Played on a communal blog
A long-running nomic on a communal blog playing out in short 1-2 month rounds called dynasties.
Currently in its 197th dynasty. Theme: Rooooad Triiiiip
Discord server for discussion.
Played on a discord server
Another nomic played in rounds (called cycles), which are longer and more mechanically varied than BlogNomic.
Currently playing two cycles:
A new nomic, played using an ongoing podcast. New episodes include all the proposals to vote on and various announcements from the nomic sphere.
Name | Medium | Description |
---|---|---|
Nomini | Discord server | A minimalistic series of Discord nomics, currently in its second iteration. Initial ruleset and notes |
Slownomic | Wiki | A nomic built around the idea of everything taking a long time. If you can only check in once a month, good. That's all we ask of you. |
JKBenbot's Wild Nomic | Discord server | A rather new game of nomic on Discord with a theme of airports. |
And that's all the nomics we know about. This information, and more, is duplicated on the nomic.club wiki, a central hub for collecting information about nomics.
I've been working on a Nomic-inspired game with a friend, and we're hoping it might be of interest to people here.
https://ledgernomix.vercel.app/
We're calling it Ledgernomix. It's blockchain based, with a browser interface. This necessarily makes it a lot less open ended than the Nomic you know but you can still get some surprising complexity emerging.
It's fast enough that you can discuss proposals in real time (eg. over Zoom) and finish a game in one to two hours. Alternatively you can let it play out over days or weeks.
Right now, we're looking for play testers.
On our test network the currency isn't worth anything but later we plan to let players stake a small amount of real money, say $5 each, which will be redistributed among them at the end of the game according to their points share, so each game will be like a tiny experimental economy.
We're aiming to use xDAI chain which is very low on energy usage and transaction fees.
If you're interested in getting involved at the play testing stage then sign up on our site. I'd welcome any questions or suggestions here.
Hello everyone still subscribed here! This is the Active Nomic List. The last edition of this newsletter was published in 2019. In those days, new nomics were relatively abundant. But since then, that's not really the case. I intended to post revisions of the Active Nomic List every month or so, but there really just wasn't any need. But several new nomics have recently started cropping up. So here are all known nomics as of right now:
| Name | Platform | Description | |---|----|----|----| | Agora Nomic | Mailing List | The longest surviving nomic on the web. Known for its complex economic subgames and their integrations with the rest of the game. Discord server for game discussion. | FRC | Mailing list | A nomiclike game older than Agora with gameplay focusing on rule-writing with increasing restrictions. | BlogNomic | Blog | A long-running nomic on a communal blog playing out in short 1-2 month rounds called dynasties. Currently in its 193rd dynasty. Discord server for discussion. | Infinite Nomic | Discord server | Another round-based nomic with longer and more mechanically varied rounds than BlogNomic. Tracking wiki | Nomini | Discord server | A minimalistic series of Discord nomics, currently in its second iteration. Initial ruleset and notes | Slownomic | Wiki | A nomic built around the idea of everything taking a long time. If you can only check in once a month, good. That's all we ask of you. | JKBenbot's Wild Nomic | Discord server | A brand new game of nomic on Discord with a theme of airports.
And that's all the nomics we know about. This information, and more, is duplicated on the nomic.club wiki, a central hub for collecting information about nomics.
https://discord.gg/w4vfGNYZXy Hey it’s my Nomic, with no theme other then maybe Airplanes and a rule preventing proposals preventing Proposals, So join!
The mini version of Nomic known as Nomini has just started its second iteration on discord! Join us! https://discord.gg/DPUQ9b37rV
By virtue of the following:
V. All players have a right to resurrect a dead game. If no change to the game state occurs for a period of three months, this Constitution and every enacted rule shall be nullified, and any person shall have the power to declare a new game with a new initial ruleset.
I hereby declare a new game of Nommit, with the following initial ruleset:
This is the rulset of the game of Nommit.
DancingBread is the only player of this game.
To do something "by declaration" is to do so by posting what you're doing somewhere public on r/nommit
DancingBread can make any changes to this ruleset by declaration.
I intend to turn nommit into some formal, platonic item that can be stored on Agora for posteriority, because it's dead.
Any interest at all? I've been wanting to start one of these for a decade now.
So back in November I started a discord based nomic, where we run a discord via democracy to see what happens. idk if anyone sees this subreddit, but as its dead I thought I would post a link to see if anyone is interested. It has large periods of inactivity, so new people is always good. https://discord.gg/Bk7JAnT
I've tried running Nomic on Telegram before with some friends who lost interest, from their feedback the game was boring and most just couldn't keep up with all the information.
The way I ran it was I created 3 channels; 1 was a general chat, 1 for announcements, and the last was the official rules. Every round, everyone got to propose one law and vote on each, then the round ends when every proposition is resolved.
It worked fairly well for the few days it went ahead in my end of managing it, but compared to Discord games, I'm worried if it's a little too amateur.
Long story short; interested in joining a game of Telegram Nomic?
Seeing as this subreddit has become essentially an advertising ground for people creating new Nomic games, I figured I might centralize them all in an effort to inform those who wish to play.
If you have a submission for the list, private message me on reddit and I'll get you added.

Yeah, yeah. I know this sub is pretty much dead, but we must be able to huddle up a handful of people to play with, right? I also know that there already exists an ongoing Nomic game on Discord, but I want to try starting a whole new one. Join the Discord server if you want to. Or not. Your choice. https://discord.gg/jfUVGJ6 Spread the news!
The game's been running for more than a year now. The game is going to restart from zero again soon, because there's a new round right around the corner! It's the ideal time to join, so come on in!
Sorry if I shouldn't post this here, but I know I was sent here looking for a nomic game, and when I found it was dead, I was sad. I decided to try to start my own Nomic server on discord, so if anyone would be interested in join, dm me or reply here.
sad,it seemed fun
Life caught up with me and I was unable to post anything concerning the elections. But now I did, so... vote.
We need:
ALSO, if you are a leader of a dynasty, add to your comment who you want to be heir.
Some of you may have noticed that I didn't get a Yraterces in office. That's because I am still not exactly sure of the Yraterces rule. I think that they are confusing and that it would be better if we made it a little more standard. So, we shall amend rule 221 to the following:
This rule establishes the appointed position of the Yraterces. The Yraterces is elected using the procedure below.
During the candidacy stage of the election, each Dynasty leader may name one heir. In addition to this the Secretary and Yraterces must name one heir each. No elector can name themselves.
During the election stage, every player may vote exactly once for one of the heirs to become the Yraterces. After the election, the player with the most votes will become the Yraterces. The "power rating" of the Yraterces is equal to the amount of votes the chosen heir received.
The Yraterces can use the following powers, diminishing their power rating by the cost specified.
[Table of Powers]
The rules state that dynasty flairs will be assigned to the players. However, it's been quite some time since I formed my dynasty, and have yet to receive a flair.
Add a new rule which reads:
Dynasty founders may, on any proposal vote, make a comment stating that their dynasty spends one, and no more, gold coins to gain one extra vote, either aye or nay, on the proposal.
If the dynasty disagrees with how the leader votes, any member may make a comment to the leader's extra vote comment, asking for a "council." If a council is called, all members of the dynasty will vote, in reply to the comment calling for the council, either aye or nay to change the extra vote used by the leader. If a majority of members who voted on the proposal vote aye, and at least three members of the dynasty vote, the extra vote is changed from aye to nay, or vice versa. If these conditions aren't met, the vote stays as it is. If there's a tie, and more than 3 members vote, there is no extra vote used by that dynasty, but the coin is not refunded.
I am hereby forming a new dynasty known as the Knights of Science. Applications are open immediately.
There will be no dynasty limit.
Let a new rule be made saying:
Events are created with the [Event] tag. Posts that declare events work just like rule change proposals and are subject to the same voting rules. There is one difference, however: the text in the post is not added to the official rules. The conditions specified are immediately put into place, but only apply once.
Rule 213/1 states that "Inactive dynasties may be removed via a proposal." This form is unclear on what constitutes an inactive dynasty.
I submit a proposal to change the wording of Rule 213 to state: No player may create a dynasty if nine or more dynasties already exist. Inactive dynasties may be removed via a proposal. Inactive dynasties are defined as dynasties who have not had a member submit a non-contingent proposals in the past 7 days.
We already have dynasty points (DP) in the rules, but the most recently passed proposal, 'Dynastic Sponsorship' adds gold pieces (GP) to the mix. Also, we have the power rating (PR) system for Yraterces. The first two 'currency' systems do absolutely nothing, while only the PR can actually be spent on anything.
The thing I immediately think is that all of these game elements could be collapsed into one or two systems that make more sense. After all, having all of these conflicting systems is annoying and confusing for everybody. And it comes with the upside that DP and GP might become useful sooner rather than later.
So, I've devised a list of options we could explore.
These are just a few of the ways we could try to reform our confusing system so far. I would like to hear more suggestions for how to do this, since I honestly think that with all these systems, reform is necessary.
We have ONE (1) candidate for Secretary. No voting is necessary. I win!
Also, there are TWO (2) members of the DIEC. I appoint these two members to these positions.
Add a new rule which reads as follows:
Each dynasty leader may choose a historical royalty figure as "Sponsor" for their dynasty.
Any dynasty whose leader chooses to do so gains 10 gold pieces.
Once a dynastic sponsor has been added, it cannot be changed.
