Its not the fault of the movie obviously. Also if you dont like reading about terrible parenting and potentially emotional abuse then don't read this. I would also like to preface that the movie was amazing for a number of reasons. Disney dropped the bag by not publishing this.
Me, my uncle and his daughter (my cousin) decided to watch something before going to sleep. Might I add that my uncle, despite having done university, cannot consume media critically at all. To him anything he watches is only for fun and has no deeper meaning ever.
So eventually the movie is nearing its completion, and the main character and ambrosius kiss. My cousin exclaims "ew! I thought that this was a good movie, but they are gay!", to which my uncle laughed. If my uncle was a typical conservative christian this scenario would be very much expected. The thing is, my uncle is basically the real life Uncle Ruckus from boondocks. He thinks he is white, rich, and christian, despite being black, poor, and part of a minority african religion (Yoruba). His main teacher in Yoruba is literally a woman married to another woman.... He wants to teach conservative values he doesnt actually follow to his child, since he would be a TERRIBLE christian/conservative for too many reasons to list.
So here comes the gut punch. I asked my cousin "what is wrong with being gay?", she said she didnt know. I asked her "why do you dislike the gays?", she also said she did not know. We had just watched an inclusivity movie, about kids being taught to hate people because they were different. So I explained that to her since she is still 9 to 10, and how just because someone is different or gay, it doesnt mean they are evil.
I got livid against my uncle, pointed out the crazy hypocrisy and inconsistency on claiming to not be homophobic because your spiritual teacher is lesbian, or because you have gay friends you dont mistreat, but wanting to teach conservative views to your child regardless when you yourself are a terrible example of a conservative.
His whole argument was "The child is mine and I pay her bills therefore I cant be wrong" and then acted like everything was normal. I hate this place and I cant wait to leave. Everyone here is a moron...
Hi, so I watched the movie last night and absolutely loved it. Everything about it was incredible down to the small animated details. But the movie never really gave Nimona a backstory. In the flashback scene we know that she’s been able to do it since she was a child. All they call her is “a monster” but what does that necessarily mean? Why can she transform? I never knew there were comics before going into this subreddit so I’m hoping someone who has read those can possibly tell me things about her that the movie just didn’t.
Someone on this sub pointed out an archive link for Art of Nimona was taken down. In response, I'm sharing the files I saved from artofnimona.com with you!
Just realized that you can't read the art book while on the page but all pages/videos are in the zip file! Maybe I'll fix the archive later
Enjoy!
I don’t know why I was afraid to watch this movie, but it definitely made me pinpoint some emotions that I had not addressed. It Definitely represents a lot of people and is actually one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. It’s definitely worth the watch hats off to the creators and writers the comedic timing was perfect. I haven’t truly laughed that much in years . I appreciate you.❤️
Ok so like, remember when we get to the market scene and we see Ballister get into that smart car or whatever, there's a scene where the sales lady is says "Don't move" and Ballister is like freaking out cause he thinks he's caught but then the lady is like talking about the offer if you notice when Ballister mouths out it almost looks like "ah fuck" or something like that. I could also be wrong though-
Hello nimona nation, I’m making a playlist with Nimona/Jinx from arcane vibes (bc I feel like they would listen to similar music) and would like suggestions. I don’t want to add songs that fit their story but isn’t their vibe, I want stuff that they would probably actually listen to in their headphones or play during a montage. (It’s ok if you haven’t seen arcane you can still recommend based off nimona) Here’s my current playlist: the playlist
Hi everyone,
As some of you may know, I’m the person who posted the 1-hour loop video of the song that Nimona listens to. I want to take this opportunity to talk about how I actually see myself in Nimona.
I’m 18 years old, but I have some characteristics of someone much younger. Like Nimona, I’m often alone because my parents don’t see the real me. I can’t be myself around them, and it’s incredibly frustrating.
I have a few friends who know the real me and accept me for who I am, but I’ve also encountered people I’ve shown my true self to who didn’t accept it and pushed me away for being “weird.” So, I put on a mask and show them a different version of myself. I’m just done with pretending, and I want to be true to myself.
I’ve had suicidal thoughts many times and have felt like I don’t belong here. It’s hard, and sometimes it feels like everything is too much.
The friends who really know me see me as a carefree kid who loves the outdoors and the wilderness, but I can’t enjoy it because my parents look at me strangely, and even when I try to play with kids much younger than me, they give me weird looks too. I just can’t take it anymore, so I avoid doing those things (which I really hate to do).
If anyone wants to reach out, feel free to email me at nimona.reddit@gmail.com or add me on Discord: le_awnu.
I hope you all have a nice rest of your day/night.

i'm going to be real, i just finished the movie, and i loved everything up to the part where ballister and goldenloin get together.
i could tell that throughout the movie, given how long ballister and nimona spent time together, ballister didnt trust her that much-- which i understand. in reality, they were only hanging out for like a month or a little more.
around the middle of the movie, he supposedly starts to understand her, he makes a mistake, apologizes (love that)- and then nimona sacrifices herself to save the city (she comes back at the end) and before she comes back a second before the credits, ballister thinks about her and misses her and goes to their hideout n stuff.
cool, but i feel like the last thing that really threw EVERYTHING OFF for me, was when he ended up dating goldenloin ANYWAY. THIS GUY HAS NOT BEEN GOOD TO HIM ONCE. throughout the movie, goldenloin is practically an antagonist. this guy antagonizes nimona until she 'dies' (even if she didnt 'blow up' im pretty sure he wouldve disliked her out of jealousy) and never believed or solidly sided with ballister even once. and i mean just ballister by himself too, he only trusts goldenloin because they grew up together.
that's fair, but my issue is he never saw past that. it was just a shallow 'couples fight' themed thing, and it never felt serious.
and despite being a kids movie, they have DONE serious things before, so im a little confused. even phineas and ferb movie did a serious moment.
simply, im pretty sure goldenloin only 'likes' or respects nimona (enough anyways) because she's 'dead'. if she was alive, hed still be the same jerk. and that irks me a lot because nimona has been nothing but likable throughout the movie (as a duo , sidekick, individual)
i feel like when he ended up dating goldenloin, it really messed up a lot of things that were established throughout the movie; And it feels like, despite the 'changes', nothing really changed at all.
That might be the point, given 'b@ll'ister has no balls, and golden'l0in' is nothing but edging towards being a f#### ass.
In ways, I guess they ARE perfect for each other, but i feel frustrated at the same time.
nimona didnt ever like goldenloin, and thats one thing; but a definite thing that was made a point in the movie was that shes always been right one way or another-- or even just directly. and the crazy thing is, she was really never wrong even once.
in the meantime, ballister has always done things the hard way, needing nimona's help, and then going back to second guessing and not listening to her even though shes always been honest and incredibly open the whole time. shes even a good sport and generally just nice person to him the whole time, despite her dramatic and 'violent' persona that she does to nearly everyone else.
i do enjoy the two protagonists and the movie was AMAZING, and i'm pretty sure most things were left open ended. but if i took everything the ending showed at face value, then i guess this is my final opinion. i wouldn't've minded if ballister got with a guy if it just wasn't THAT guy.
i dislike goldenloin because he stays 'neutral', but in the kind of way where he's just a really dislikable person who cant pick a side.
"its a kid movie, so it has a lot of plot holes" just doesnt cut it at all. there was just so many holes here, that if this story was a white t-shirt-- It's feels closer to a weird spiderweb.
I've started a bit of a hobbie of writing a journal comprised of basically reviews of my media consumption. I watched Nimona on Netflix last night and noticed I was putting a bit more effort than usual into collecting my thoughts on it and figured someone here may appreciate it. I used the movie spoiler flare, but there's only one section that has explicit spoilers and I'll put it in a reply with the reddit black bar censor thing on it.
I finally watched this last night, I had been meaning to for awhile. I'll say out the gate I can't recommend it any stronger. I'll avoid any spoilers though I will mention some themes so if my recommendation alone is enough to entice you, go watch it and come back to this.
Super duper fun, excellent animation and direction. Some genuinely stunning visuals especially toward the end. reminded me a lot of the Spiderverse movies (which i also love and adore) which makes sense since they are both a comic book/graphic novel adapted into animation I believe. There's a lot of subtle nuance to the animation that it could've gone without but greatly benefits from. I'd really like to see more of this world so much so that I'm tempted to look into the source material novel. Which would be a first for me for that medium. I even wish there was more to this, like a full on series how I understand the "How to train your Dragon" IP has been milked.
The world portrayed is very interesting, kind of like if the Shadowrun IP of fantasy cyberpunk was a pixar/dreamworks style project. Now it's relatively low fantasy, there's not orcs and elves walking around as far as I could tell. But like the knights and general law enforcement ride hover bikes shaped like horses. They have a working metro system but still used swords. Their crossbows have laser sights on them. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it is a lesser utilized mix of tech and culture at least in my media consumption and one that I enjoy. You could certainly sum up many settings as "high tech / low culture" but it's rare to see it in such an visually appealing and broadly palatable way.
Also I love Nimona's design. There's probably something beyond the surface to find meaning in about her primarily tomboy coding but I couldn't gleam any meaningful gender expectations in the world. She gets called a freak virtually unprompted early in the film but from what I can gather it's because of her disruptive outlook and punk aesthetic rather than a specific subversion of gender norms in this case.
Surprisingly mature and dark at times, I'd say the core themes are rejection and belonging. Feeling like you are forced to choose between feeling adequate or authentic. The two primary characters express opposing approaches to trying to carve out their place in a world that denies them. Fighting against state and culturally enforced dogmatic ideology. The main guy tries to capitulate to the system, first unknowingly through childish obstinance then later probably a sense of duty to pave the way for those that follow him. Miraculously finding an in, he toils harder than his peers to show he has earned his place among those who don't need to go to the lengths he does to arrive at the same status. It's a cliche. But despite his efforts, the system is rigged against him.
In his fall from grace the titular Nimona seeks him out hoping to rouse another reject, villainized as she was into a kindred spirit who will join her long since kindled desire to challenge the ideas and actions of those who shunned her too long ago. She bounces back and forth between that and simply wanting to be the monster they accuse her of being, seeing that as the path of least resistance. She feels genuine discomfort in conforming and yet at times still wishes she had the luxury of reflexively falling into a role neatly pre-designed for her in the world. And being tempted to do so even if that role is a death sentence. Furthermore she's so wanting of a place in this world she even defaults to being the subordinate in this new relationship she forges. Despite being ostensibly the more powerful and hardened half of the team.
The dynamic between the two main characters is nice, even through voice acting alone they have great chemistry and watching them originally clash only to evolve to be more like eachother in meaningful ways is great. It's not purely the timeless "straight man/funny man" pairing but the silly guy reminding the straight guy that he too, under his costume and training, is a funny man. It's probably not something you haven't heard before. But it is done with such competent direction and expert craftsmanship it is an incredibly memorable example of these themes and connotations. Big fan.
Again if you've read this far and haven't watched it, I would put this on a high priority for a good time. It's metal. 🤟
In the scene showing her following the other animals rejecting her for being different is symbolizing how all sentient things in nature fear what is different even animals. I also notice She doesn’t get to upset at this though because she knows their just going on instinct. But she knows humans should know better and that why it’s so traumatizing because of all the animals in the animal kingdom humans should be the most tolerant of what’s different but in reality their the most terrified and the cruelest out of all others in the animal kingdom
I know Nimona can't die in general, but this is just a question I thought up:
If Nimona was in MK1 (Mortal Kombat, of course), just like Ghostface, Omni-Man, and Homelander, what would her character interactions be like, and of course, what would her fatalities be (not her deaths, of course, but the deaths she causes to the other characters)?
The animality is pretty obvious, because she's a shapeshifter, so a few animals would be useful, like a wolf and rhino, but what do you guys think?
I mean, she got sharp teeth, red hair, (orange hair for you slow people) like, anyone see the resemblance?
