I know I'm not the only one who likes to walk around when its dark. The purpose of this subreddit is to post pictures of your favourite spots and nice "after dark" pictures, and to post stories, or the musings you've had out and about in the dark. Feel free to post about new light days (NLDs). Grainy, crapping photos of blackness have their home here =) Especially if they're taken in the rain or snow!
Don't complain about bad photos, they are supposed to be bad, it's night, and we're walking, and possibly in the rain and snow =P

Security Cam Image - GHOST, NIGHTWALKER, ETC? - Fort Collins, Colorado (PHOTOS) https://www.phantomsandmonsters.com/2024/03/security-cam-image-ghost-nightwalker.html - The image popped up on my feed today. The image was captured 10 months ago on a resident's home security camera in Fort Collins, Colorado. So, what is it?
I really also wanna just walk at night, there isn’t anything more satisfying for me then to do it around Dawn so I can get the sunrise, any advice before I try it? Again I wanna nightwalk and incase your wondering why I mentioned Dawn and sunrise I usually walk for very extended times. So walking late my main worry is just making sure I don’t get capped.
Recently it rained. New Mexico does not get enough rain.
On the night it rained, my twin and I decided to go for a walk together, even though it was past midnight. The air retained ambient heat from the 34 degree day (over 100 F) , however the light drizzle of rain brought the temperature down to a comfortable level. It had been almost a year since I last took a walk after midnight.
We live in the suburbs and our neighborhood does not have many street lamps. My twin suggested walking the residential streets to visit the parks in our neighborhood. I recommended we go along the major street because the sparse, fleeting traffic is a reminder of the many people around us who we will never know. To vary our walk we would sometimes stroll through the residential streets. We alternated between these two realms.
As we walked, my twin and I talked low. Sometimes we embraced silence to listen to our environment. After an hour of walking, we decide to put on some quiet music. I requested Paganini, which was the only music I felt could contribute to this experience. We would walk for another half hour before we returned home.
On our way home I stopped to look at a spider. It was hanging from its web upside down and low to the ground. The spider's web was only visible with the light of passing cars. We took our time to watch the spider, who eventually cleared some small leaves off of its web. While watching the spider I also saw a baby bug that looked like a cockroach and was just millimeters in length.
Despite our familiarity with the area from walking, cycling, and bus commuting, the subtle rain and summer night weather transformed these surroundings into a unique experience. My hope is that more people are able to use public transit and walk or cycle more often to become close to their neighborhood in the ways that I have been able to. Please take notice of everything that surrounds you, and notice it all again under new circumstances. There is a lot of beauty to be found.
Please take care. If you have someone to walk with, please go with them. If not, let someone know your plans and be sure to tell them when you return safe. Also, stay hydrated. It sucks to walk a kilometer home once you are already dehydrated.
Best of luck!
Signed,
Selbee
On the night of 7-8 December 2021, from approximately 23:20 to 00:30, I snuck out of the house for the first time.
The adrenaline itself, the fear of both being caught and the dangers of the late night, made it one of the best experiences of my life.
On the 14th of December, I set an alarm for 02:30, and went out for the second time.
After a bit of walking, I opted to lay in a nearby field, and saw my first two shooting stars. That date was also, without my knowledge, the exact time of a Geminid meteor shower.
On the second of May, tonight, I'll be going out for a third time. It's been cloudy so far, and I'm going to take that opportunity to do less stargazing and more walking. I've been avoiding that high for too long, and now I'm severely yearning for it again.
I'm so, so glad to have found this community to share these experiences with, and I hope to do it more in the future (once I have fewer responsibilities, that is...)
I'll post some pictures soon!
Glad to find this group! I've always preferred the cover of night. Just to be quiet, still, and observe what's going on. Just moved to a place that is very isolated and secluded, but not terribly far from pretty populated "city". LSS, a friend needs repairs to a building on the property, I'm very handy, and I needed a cheap place to live. Think fight club house but in the woods. The property backs up to 150+acre wooded preserve. I'm in the back 5-6acres next to the creek (actually a small river). From day one, when I walk out in the morning there are always 4-5 deer running off, several wild turkeys that come right up to the front door (when I'm inside) , a hawk couple that seem to always be arguing, multiple owls ( I hear the daily conversations and have narrowed it down to 3 different owls. Barred, I think)
Anyway, took a strole up to the main road tonight for funsies. Got to watch THREE foxes having some sort of fox meeting. One large (male?) And two smaller ones dart back and forth on a neighbors driveway. Once I noticed them I slowed down and kept as quiet as possible. They still knew I was there at about 30yards out.
Sorry didn't get any pictures this time but I will try to next time!
An owl swooped down and alighted on a branch that was maybe 8 feet in front of me and 12 feet up. It was really cool. All of a sudden in my flashlight's light, there's this bright mass (from the light bouncing off its wings and underside) coming really quickly at me and I was like wtf. Then it landed and just sat there on the branch. It was super cool. I've only seen owls maybe a dozen times in my life, and it just came down and sat there. I looked at it for a good couple of minutes, making sure to keep the main beam of my flashlight down. I was kind of having a bad day and that just completely reset my mind. It was such a beautiful (and silent, my gosh!) bird.
The old subreddit was dead, and so I have taken over moderating it in the hopes that it will grow! I love taking walks at night, and I've always wanted a place to post up my shitty night photos, and a place to sort of thought dump and muse on or after a walk. So here we are! Of course, you're free to post whatever night walking related content you think is cool =P but that's just my motivation for the sub!
The CSS is still a work in progress, so my apologies if some things are visually, well, broken. There are few things I just can't get to change, but after this term I will petition some help to get that sorted. In the mean time, my apologies, I don't have time to sit down and mess with code to fix a couple of white borders atm until after term. It's driving me crazy as well, believe me, and it's with and without RES. Mobile will be good at least, which is most important when out walking anyway =P
So, with that bit about me, and my apologies for the visuals still being under construction, welcome! I hope you find the content in this sub enjoyable, and I hope contributing to this sub will make your walks more fun =)
