St Albert’s Cheese Curds

Anybody know if these are available in Niagara on the Lake, St Cats, Welland, etc ? In the Buffalo southtowns but willing to make the drive if they’re available in the grocery stores from where they are based in Ottawa.

Birthday treat for 30th Birthday!

Hi everyone! Happy holidays! I’m looking for ideas to celebrate my boyfriend’s 30th birthday in January. I was thinking of a relaxing spa getaway since he’s often tired from work. Do you have any spa recommendations or other creative suggestions for making his day extra special?

23F looking for gym partner

I’m looking for a person with gym experience to help me reach fitness goals and help keep each other motivated plus maybe help out with proper dieting and stuff. I already go 2-3 times a week but it’s purely a guessing game and I don’t even know if I’m doing proper form and my diet is terrible. Hopefully someone around my age that I can click with and become friends with. If this interests you feel free to DM me and we can see if we click. TIA!

Dear Niagara Regional Council:

Addressing Homelessness in Niagara: A Canadian Case for Ethical and Economical Solutions

Homelessness in Canada is a complex issue with devastating consequences for individuals, families, and communities. In the Niagara region, this crisis demands immediate attention and innovative solutions. This post outlines key findings and recommendations tailored to Niagara, focusing on addiction, encampment clearing, and the use of the Notwithstanding Clause.

National Context

  • Homelessness Impact: Over 235,000 Canadians experience homelessness annually (StatCan).
  • Key Challenges: Addiction and mental health often exacerbate homelessness (Housing Infrastructure Canada).

Ontario's Crisis

  • Homeless Population: Nearly 234,000 people, according to unofficial estimates (The Trillium).
  • Contributing Factors: Rising housing costs, systemic gaps, and lack of province-wide data (Auditor's Report).
  • Encampments: Over 1,400 encampments reported across Ontario in 2023.

Niagara’s Landscape

  • 2021 Statistics: 665 people experiencing homelessness, including 121 children (Niagara Counts Results).
  • Chronic Homelessness: 50% of individuals face prolonged housing instability (COM 8-2023).
  • St. Catharines: 160+ individuals unsheltered in 2024 (The Pointer).

Encampment Issues

Legal Considerations

  • Court Decisions: Municipalities cannot clear encampments without providing adequate alternatives (Make the Shift).

Ethical Concerns

  • Encampment clearing disrupts lives, leading to loss of belongings and social connections (ACLU Washington).
  • Forces individuals into isolated, unsafe conditions (NHCHC).

Economic Costs

  • Healthcare: Annual cost per homeless individual is $56,000 (CMHA Ontario).
  • Justice System: Increased arrests and incarcerations linked to homelessness (CAMH Evidence).
  • Shelter Costs: Emergency shelter beds cost $1,932/month, while social housing is $199.92/month (ACTO Factsheet).

Recommendations

  1. Housing First: Implement proven programs prioritizing immediate access to permanent housing (HomelessHub).
  2. Supportive Housing: Fund housing with individualized support services (Niagara Region Housing Programs).
  3. Community Outreach: Expand outreach and harm reduction strategies (Ontario News).
  4. Avoid Notwithstanding Clause: Uphold Charter rights and avoid dangerous precedents (TVO Today).
  5. Alternative Solutions: Explore sanctioned encampments, tiny homes, or repurposed vacant buildings.
  6. Indigenous Homelessness: Develop culturally appropriate solutions for Indigenous communities (Brock Symposium).

Ongoing Initiatives

  • Built for Zero Canada: Data-driven strategies to reduce chronic homelessness (Community Solutions).
  • Homelessness Prevention Program (HPP): Tailored local approaches (Ontario HPP).

905 Round-Up: Crombie’s Housing Plan and Ford Hits Back on Trump

https://preview.redd.it/6g68wgfmuf7e1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=a47ac19ebc2837a3a17104916a73aa61e4c0030c

The Podcast is Here

Coming off our previous episode with Evan Scrimshaw, the Ontario Liberals announced a major part of their housing platform. Their plan would eliminate development charges from municipalities, replace them with a provincial fund, end the Land Transfer Tax for new home buyers and bring in phased-in rent controls for renters. Is this what progressives seek to win themselves to the Ontario Liberals? And are we going to be eating our words after our previous episode? Well yes and no. We discuss why this is good and its shortcomings in actually getting housing built.

Our second story focuses on how Premier Doug Ford of all people in Canada is the one punching back at President Donald Trump. In retaliation to Trump's proposed 25% tariffs, his promise to cut off electricity to American states is the standout statement in what is shaping up to be a trying time between our two countries. Joel walks back his initial statement on social media and both of our hosts ask, is this what's needed?

Best NOTL Wineries in the Winter??

Looking for recommendations for the best wineries to visit at NOTL, specifically in the winter. I am a dry red drinker (which I know the region is not known for) and my husband does not drink wine. However we are doing our first post baby weekend away at NOTL in March. I am all about the ambience for this trip, so if any of the interiors of the wineries are specifically pretty or have fireplaces I am in. Likewise if there are any other restaurants or breweries that fit this I would love suggestions!! Also if there happens to be a decent dry red at any of the wineries I am totally in. We are staying at Pillar and Post but will be driving or ubering to different wineries on the Saturday of our visit.

Trip to Niagara Falls from NY

Guys, I need the good answer here, please.

My daughter turns 16 and as present - we flynto NY from UK, and we will have 1 week in NY. It will be February.

As we already crossing the pond, I was thinking maybe to spend 2 days of our trip to visit Niagara falls.

Initially my 0lan was to rake like kight train or something ir order not to waste a day, but all I can find are day trains, which takes like 12 hrs..

Alternative is to rent a car for 2 days and leave Ny early mornijg, drive 7 hrs (according Google), spend night in Buffalo, see niagara falls next day and trip back, arrivingl NY late evenijg of same day.

8s tjis biable? How lojg time to spend there? We would not 0pan to take boat trip 9r something...

How to plan such visit, how long would it take or I would need another day here?

Maybe flying is another option?

Thanks in advance!

Why the Ontario Liberals Are Going to Have a Hard TIme in the 905

https://preview.redd.it/p08uamp3i16e1.jpg?width=2387&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=197212aa492029bbe4e66ac2616d9231f90052d1

The podcast can be found here

The Ontario Liberal Party attempted something of a rebrand of their leader, Bonnie Crombie at the start of December. At their leadership dinner fundraiser, the party brought in $1.65 million for their coffers before an expected spring 2025 Ontario election. However, what made headlines was her keynote address where she broke ranks with their federal cousins and denounced the Carbon Tax, calling it a mistake and vowing not to implement one should she become Premier. This after years of the Ontario PC's branding her as a Trudeau Carbon Tax Liberal. In addition to that announcement, Bonnie Crombie also announced her support of funding police departments across the province. This is on the heels of many runaway policing budgets, as municipalities struggle to get their finances under control.

This sharp turn to the right, in search of chipping away at Doug Ford's base, has alienated many progressives in Ontario. Many of them are Ontario Liberal supporters who now feel alienated from the party. Will this rebranding of Bonnie Crombie 2.0 pay off?

To discuss this, we invited onto the podcast Evan Scrimshaw of Scrimshaw Unscripted. Evan has been openly critical of the Ontario Liberals as of late and his recent substack article has taken to task this recent strategy of the Ontario Liberals and made us question how viable their chances are of winning a majority of seats now in the 905.

Best Winery lunch in December?

Hosting an out-of-town visitor.

I'm based in Hamilton but we will be spending a day in NOTL and a couple things by the falls.

Looking for a nice lunch (preferably with a tasting menu, but not required) at a winery

Also, any recommendations for deals on the butterfly conservatory and indoor go karting would be appreciated.

Thank you!
