Nexus 4 vs iPhone 5SE for daily use

Hey everyone,

I've got a near mint rarely used Nexus 4 and a similar near mint iPhone 5SE sitting in my drawer. I bought the Nexus as a personal phone when it first came out, then got a job which provided me with a phone to use.

I suspect, in the near future, I'll be losing my company phone and will need to set up a personal phone.

I will be using it for phone calls, photos, text messages, what's app and Instagram.

Do you think the Nexus 4 is still a good phone for daily use or would the iPhone 5SE be better for what I'm trying to use it for?

Thanks James

Nexus 4 Battery manufactured in 2018 [WTF!?]

Hello, I'm still with my nexus 4 from 2012 with original battery.I was thinking to buy a new phone, like the Mi A3, but actually I'm not 100% sure about it. I wish I could be more open mind to buy a pixel but that's ridiculous expensive, even the 3a is overpriced for what he offer. So I was searching for some original battery and: on Amazon they sell "original" from 2013 but, reading the reviews, most of them are fake and/or have very bad stamina (too old). I've contacted LG to know where can I buy it and they replied with a store that sell the battery at the original price (~30€) manufactured in 2016 (!?). Then on Aliexpress I've found a seller that says "This product is ensured that it is purchased from the LG mobile phone manufacturers accessories sales channels, absolutely 100% genuine original." and is manufactured in 2018 (WHAAT?!). So I've contacted him to be sure what he wrote and he replied that "yes, it's original". I'm highly sheptic about it but I'm here just to hear any good news from you guys.I also asked to LG if they know if the battery was still produced until 2 years ago but they didn't replied yet.

Edit: LG replied and can't answer my question -_-'

so long, and thanks for all the fish

Used my Nexus 4 exclusively the past 7 years (!!), still works perfectly (replaced battery once during this time). Upgraded to iPhone 11 Pro now (very similar form factor, bit heavier and thicker, totally different OS), N4 will go to kids as soon as I've transferred all data. Any tips on transferring data from Android to iOS BTW?

Thanks for all the good times my little N4, you will be fondly remembered.

Nexus 4 - Stuck in "Unfortunately, Google Play services has stopped" Loop

Recently booted up my Nexus 4, as the motherboard on my Pixel XL (part of the Nexus 6p "free" upgrade via Google) died. Was working OK but a bit slow, until I put my Cricket micro-SIM (via adapter to fit the Nexus 4 SIM size slot) and now it keeps looping with the Google Play services error. I cannot open settings, or anything really - without the error message. So I cannot clear the cache or open the Play Store to see if there are updates available.

What can I do? I only need the phone for a limited time (another week or 2) as I plan on buying the Pixel 4.

Where is the microphone located?

I read that there are 2. One above the screen (speaker mic?) and one below (normal mic).

My Nexus 4's normal microphone doesn't work anymore after replacing my broken usb charging port. Is that where the mic is located? And that I've bought a faulty replacement?

If so, can someone pinpoint where it is exactly? Thank you.

Broke white antenna cable while replacing Battery.

Hi All,

I just completed a nexus 4 battery replacement (holy moly was it ever glued in) unfortunately i ripped the white antenna wire that sits directly next to the battery. I tried my best to shove the wire back into the connector but i doubt that fixed it. Any idea what this antenna does?

New battery is working great. *Thumbs up*

Old working Nexus 4 looking for a good home

Figured this would be the best place to find a Nexus 4 enthusiast who may want to use my old device for parts. Digitizer works fine, just has a hairline crack. PM if interested.

Getting stuck at startup screen

Hello subreddit! I recently re-installed Lollipop on my Nexus 4 using adb by following the instructions similar to here: https://docs.ubuntu.com/phone/en/devices/reinstalling-android

It worked fine for a week but one day it just shutdown by itself and since then, whenever I try switch it on, it gets stuck on the Android loading screen. Also, I (stupidly) turned off USB debugging a few days prior to this incident. So it doesn't appear in the list of devices when I use "adb devices" while the phone is connected via USB. And for some reason, the Recovery Mode (from Power + Vol down) is not accessible anymore.

Is there any hope left to resurrect it? Thanks in advance.

PS: I recently made another post looking to purchase another device but I would be very much content if my old Nexus can get up and running.

Changing device from Nexus 4 in 2019 - Recommendations?

Hello subreddit! My Nexus 4 (from 2013) has started acting up since last week and I am looking to get a new phone with sort of similar specifications.

The key features that I loved about Nexus and looking for in the new phone are:

  • Rugged design (the Nexus took at least 10 falls without any screen protection and survived each time)
  • Sufficiently large display size (something around 5'', makes it easier to operate single-handedly)
  • Stock Android (a not-so-bloated proprietary OS might also do)
  • Audio-out jack (had to say this because it's 2019)
  • Decent camera (good enough for well lit outdoors will do)

In terms of functionality, I used my Nexus for very basic purposes like instant messaging, video calls, listening to podcasts, and tracking bike rides. I think Instagram was the most resource intensive app I was using.

I am in Europe and the budget is approx € 350.
Thanks in advance.

Digitizer replacement

So, the top layer of my screen (glass+digitizer, above the LCD) are delaminating, causing the digitizer to stop working at least in two sides of the screen. Has anyone replaced their Nexus 4 screen before? How hard was it?

Nexus 4 resurrection

Resurrected my nexus 4 to Android 9.0 recently, thing still works great! has the launch battery still, battery lasts decent though I'm going to replace it with a 3700 aliexpress just for longevity sake. No cracks or anything bad at all really. Only thing missing is LTE, can't seem to figure out how to get it up and going again. that and an SD card this phone would be going good for a long while.

The Nexus 4 was the peak of phone design

Just resurrected my Nexus 4 after 3 years of using other phones (Nexus 5x, Moto X4). Is it just me, or was this the perfect phone? The screen is exactly the right size--big enough to type, small enough to use it with one hand. The glass is beautiful and the notification sounds and vibrations aren't annoying. Wireless charging. I think I'm going to go back to daily driving this thing but as a secondary phone--I really like the Litephone concept and the Nexus 4 is a perfect option IMO

Giving my 87 year old grandpa a Nexus 4. What's the most stable rom? He'll be using a launcher made for the elderly (Koala) so Android version is irrelevant.

I especially want to avoid the SOD bug (screen of death). I've only used this phone a bit yesterday and this morning it wouldn't turn on without a soft reset. It's currently on stock 5.1.1.

Affordable but good battery replacement?

My nexus 4 is old and battery is terrible now. I'm looking for a new battery. I don't want to spend $50-$100 for a new one. I'm willing to spend up to $20 for a decent one. I've checked ebay and they have affordable ones, and i know they're all fake but as long as they're good and last, then i don't care. However, many people say those ebay batteries don't even last 6 months.

anyone has experience with those ebay batteries? should i bite the dust and buy one? Where can i get genuine or Good nexus 4 batteries for cheap or decent price?

WiFi issues with Nexus 4 - This connection is using an insecure or invalid certificate

I'm not sure how to fix this one. I cannot connect to my WiFi (2.4 or 5) on my Nexus 4. All my other devices are OK. Even 1st gen Nexus 7. I've wiped the phone and reinstalled stock ROM, plus I tried Nitrogen and LineageOS yesterday with the same results. I can see the network, type the password, it'll connect, but with an exclamation.

Anyone else have this issue? Or has an idea where to look (don't say Google).

If you think it's toast, any recommendations on another old cheap Android phone with QI charging?

Best budget upgrade from the Nexus 4?

I've had my Nexus 4 since 2012 and have used it almost every day since. I've kept it in near-mint condition, haven't dropped it once, and only had to replace the charging board and battery. I've even got it loaded up with NitrogenOS 8.1.0. Unfortunately, it's become increasingly difficult to find decent batteries for it and now it seems only junk Chinese batteries are available. Currently, I'm lucky to get five or six hours of idle time before my phone dies so I think it's time to finally lay the phone to rest and get something new (used).

I have a small budget so I'm looking for something I can get used, refurbished, etc. for under $130. Was thinking about a Nexus 6p, but not sure if that's the best option available. Anyone have any recommendations? I'd like to get something with at least 32GB of storage, good battery life, and good cameras. I don't play mobile games; I mostly just use my phone for work and taking pictures. It'd be nice to have something with enough battery life to let me use the Waze app for 2-3 hours each day and maybe an hour of YouTube plus 8 hours of idle time.

Update: So I forgot to add one more thing I need in a phone: NFC. That seems to have ruled out most suggestions here, unfortunately, but I use it quite often. Honestly surprised there are phones made after 2012 without NFC. O.o

I decided to buy a Moto X4 since it seems to have everything I need. Thanks for all the suggestions! =)
