Hell In A Bottle (1986) "Nikkatsu’s perverse Gothic, fusing “Blue Lagoon” with “Flowers in the Attic.” This film is beautiful, bizarre, and baffling." - "The house scenes remind me of Italian gothic films. The seclusion. The gaslighting, the sibling love affair, could make anyone go crazy."

Death Powder (1986) "One of the most bizarre films I've ever seen, which intentionally makes no sense in order to act as a metaphor for the way in which life cannot be explained. Also spawned the Japanese cyberpunk movement, paving the way for films like Tetsuo: The Iron Man and 964 Pinocchio."

Searching for weird video of gross slimy "teacher" monster oozing while meeting with student (2000s)

This was in the era of Green Leaves Yatta! and Shingo Mama's Oha Rock, the video had a female student sitting in front of her teacher's desk, but the teacher was a large gooey monster with slime dripping everywhere. I believe he handles her schoolwork and gets it all slimy. I believe the concept was that he was the manifestation of a creepy teacher.

Ring any bells?

Japan's subtleness in (officially non-sexual) sexual contents

As you here all know, Japan is known for appreciation towards subtleness in all things. Compared to Western foods, Japanese foods taste much less intense. Japanese men are less masculine. Japanese women are less feminine. Their emotional expression is less intense. Their literature is very subtle and delicate. They appreciate reserved, not exaggerated, natural, and subtle beauty. Therefore, Japan's sense of beauty is less obvious and often hard to interpret for Westerners.

Here I introduce a YouTube channel, where videos are interviews with random Japanese women aged around early 20s asking about their sexual experience and what their opinion on it. I have nothing to do with this channel. I just randomly discovered it, and wanted to share the very Japanness in these videos.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sm-hQr-BRfY

The videos could look documentary videos about sociosexual culture in Japan. However, these videos are, I think, all made to arouse sexual desire i.e. porn films. I understand you are confused. Thus I will explain the logic of how these videos arouse sexual desire, and demonstrate that this is an example of Japan's subtleness in eroticism.

The videos in this channel are mostly about sexual questions and the thumbnails are obviously sexually-stimulating design. Thus, it is clear that this channel is oriented for sexual contents. All videos are made in the same structure but with different questions. The key question is asked at the end of each interview, and is the video titles and thumbnails. Therefore audience would expect their motivation to watch these videos to be fulfilled towards the end of each interview. Targeted audience would subscribe to this channel because they want to see more of these contents.

Except for the latest interview with a sex worker, all the women in the videos are apparently randomly selected, and average women in Japan. The interview begins with quite normal questions like how their day is. Therefore audience can have a rare experience of accessing to private information of real women in Japan. The voice of the interviewer sounds like she is at least older than 40. Thus the girls seem quite relaxed answering questions sincerely. They do not expect at all that they are going to be asked about quite explicit questions. Therefore, audience can appreciate their unprepared attitudes towards sexual questions. Audience can feel superiority from the fact that they know that the lady in the video will soon be talking about their sexual experience but she doesn't know yet.

The questions become gradually private such as relationship and boyfriend. Finally, the question in the video title is asked. This seamless transition is very carefully constructed. Since the interviewer is an old lady, and because of the gradual transition, they have already opened their heart when they are asked about the explicit question. Therefore audience can expect that they are likely to be honest and appreciate strong reality about sexual life of average woman in Japan. This is contrast to videos in other channels where a male interviewer is overly casually asking girls about their sexual life on street, especially in terms of how real it sounds (it does not matter how real it is).

It is not only about allegedly real story about their sexual life that provide eroticism to the audience. In fact, their answers to the key question are often not quite sexually exciting, or they could be even boring. This means, what they actually answer doesn't really matter. It may be even more about their gradual opening of mind to talk about sexual experience. Thus audience can appreciate exhilarating expectation on what they might answer. Also the fact that they are thinking about their own sexual experience is more important than what they actually say.

This channel is obviously targeted for non-Japanese audience because everything but the original sound is in English. But I am not quite sure if non-Japanese audience can really appreciate the extreme subtle eroticism that the creator of the channel probably aims for. Therefore here I explain the rationale behind it. This could be regarded as a conceptual art in that they can express eroticism in this way.

Cute Devil (1982) "Those rushing to more Nobuhiko Ōbayashi after House/Hausu in search of the same fix of zany horror would do well to seek this out; his expertise as a visual stylist is once again on full display."

Sister Street Fighter : Hanging By A Thread (1974) For my money Etsuko Shihomi is every bit as iconic (and fiery) a figure in Japanese cinema as mentor Sonny Chiba - See also 13 Steps Of Maki & Norifumi Suzuki's excellent The Great Chase (

Do nothing competition in Japan. Participants had to do nothing for an hour and a half: talking, sleeping, and generally moving were prohibited, and the winner was chosen based on the most stable pulse.
