Hello. Given the recent election and the possibility of NOAA being privatized was wondering if there is an open source network of people contributing data? What station would you recommend if something exists. Thanks in advance.
Joined this group because I really want a weather station in my back yard. The neighbor had one that reported to WU that I looked at frequently, and theirs died.
I thought I made a decision on buying an AcuRite Atlas 7 in 1, but reading this group now leads me to believe they’re not durable and trouble prone. People seem to like the Tempest, but it lacks a native remote display which I want. Ambient looked interesting, but again, so many trouble posts here lead me to believe they’re not so great. LaCrosse seems to be really accurate, but who wants to pay for a subscription? And Davis? Buy once cry once, but for a first timer it seems a bit much.
I’m stumped. Are there any weather stations that are in the $500 range that aren’t total trash?
A megathread or FAQ for newbies like me would be super useful.
Thanks for any advice you guys can offer.
My Tempest weather station recently started going into Eco Mode on cloudy days. The first time it happened was back in the spring when it was still under warranty. But that was after 4 or 5 cloudy days in a row, so I didn't think much of it. But lately it's been going in Eco Mode after a few hours of clouds or overnight. It's out of warranty now, but I sent in a ticket anyway and WeatherFlow looked up my station ID number and said they could see from the data history where it started to fail last spring. Since it was still under warranty at that time, they sent me out a new unit at no cost. That's the way customer service should be. Thank you, WeatherFlow.
My wife is an environmental scientist and loves weather. I've been thinking of a few things to get her for the holidays when I stumbled across this awesome community.
I was looking at products from ambient weather but feel a little lost. The primary concern is that we live in an apartment. We are on the third (top) floor. We can't mount anything to the roof, but I am fairly confident we should be able to mount a device off our railing on the patio (covered patio however). Considering the proximity to the building, I am worried most of the readings would be inaccurate.
Is this a reasonable idea, or is it better suited for a house? Thank you!
Not new, but we just had fence and roof replaced, so I decided to relocate to get truer wind readings.
Any cause for concern with this location? Located in North Texas, where we routinely hit triple digits in the summer, so I was going to extend it further to get it further away from the roof, but I thought I’d wait and see how necessary that became.
Hi all,
I will soon be the owner of a Tempest from Weatherflow. This is my first weather station and I’m really looking forward to getting into this hobby.
I’m based in the UK, so keeping that in mind, I was wondering if someone could please share some beginner’s advice on publishing my data to weather websites?
I know about Weather Underground, but I’m keen to publish my data as widely as possible so that it can be accessed locally in my community etc.
Outside of WU, I’ve looked up the UK WOW, which I will see if I can send to. But are there any others? What is the best way of approaching this? I’ve looked at WEEWX and Cumulus, but they look a little complicated for my liking.
Any tips and advice appreciated.
Thanks.
I had the unit for 3 years and the batteries went low so i notised that it lost communication but when after i changed it dont go online The led shows permanent red
I have pressed reset what more can I do? Or it is broken?
New here!
I've had an AcuRite 5-in-1 for ~6 years now. It's still working alright, but it's definitely time for a replacement. Looking to purchase an Ambient Weather (others have directed me to Ecowitt, though). The AcuRite Atlas, Davis Vue/VP2, and Tempest don't meet my needs.
My house is surrounded by trees such that any mounting situation will be non-optimal. My AcuRite gets mediocre wind and rainfall readings partly because of that, possibly leaving the modular setup of the WS-5000 somewhat pointless. Putting an array on the roof is pretty much my best bet for getting decent compromise readings. Torn between the 2902, 2000, and 4000.
Would like some help weighing my options.
Would like to enter the home weather station market. It looks like Davis requires a monthly fee to see your data?
Are there any that don't charge a monthly fee?
I'd like to participate in WeatherUndergound.
Will the ecowitt WS3900 work for me?
I’ve had my WS-2902 since 2019 and it’s been very reliable and accurate. Recently I noticed that we’ve been going through batteries every couple of weeks. Being on a 10m pole, this is quite an undertaking and I’m just tired of replacing them. After trouble shooting the batteries (Amazon basics vs. Costco vs. Duracell vs. Harbor freight) I decided to check the solar array. Whelp, it’s completely disintegrated and is covered in rust/dust/crud. Unfortunately Ambient doesn’t sell the solar array any longer and there is no way to replace or fix it. After 5 years it’s time to move on.
I’m pretty technical minded so I don’t mind the set-up that was required with Ambient, but I don’t want to spend close to 250 dollars every 5 years.
Pros: I like the display that comes with the Ambient and my wife (who is less technology friendly) likes it as well. She usually glances at it and then asks Alexa for the weather.
It works well with my Rachio.
I have a PWS account so that’s not really an issue either.
Cons: Replacement is going to be expensive and I don’t want to be in the same boat 5 years from now.
Tempest doesn’t have a display screen (other than buying a tablet and allowing it to run all the time. TEMU may have a cheap tablet option we can put in a stand or a wall mount.
Tempest isn’t known for their wind speed accuracy (or that’s what I have read from other Reddit posts)
I read something recently that I have to order it from Rachio in order to get it to sync as there is a sync code? I’m not sure if this is still accurate.
Having to add new mounting hardware, learn a new system, but another tablet, and pay $330 dollars for the pleasure of doing so, doesn’t quite sit well with me.
I know they have yearly Black Friday sales, which is likely what I’ll wait for unless someone wants to DM a code ?
Here is my question, is Tempest that much better to justify the extra cost and hassle of mounting a new system, getting a sync code and having to buy another tablet?
I’ve just mounted my new Tempest in the southern part of Australia. Everything seems ok except the wind direction - it is reading the opposite of the actual wind direction. It is currently blowing westerly but the tempest shows easterly for the past hour and a half. Wind speed seems to be pretty accurate when compared to other weather data.
The arrow is oriented south (with the solar panels facing north) as per instructions for the southern hemisphere.
Does anyone know what is going on?
Hi all,
I have a bunch of spare parts laying around from previous projects, and I'm trying to figure out how to use them to build a decent Wundergound/CWOP station. Here are the parts I've got:
Campbell CR310 datalogger
RM Young wind monitor (non SDI-12)
HMP155 Temp/Hum
Lambrecht Rain[e] tipping bucket
I can set the station up in Short Cut, but from there, I'm lost how to get it into Wunderground. Does anyone have an experience how to upload from a Campbell unit to the web?
Hey everyone,
We’re about to buy a Tempest Weather Station and I’m looking for advice for a good display that I can wall mount which shows the results off Tempest.
Anyone have suggestions or have done this before?
Thanks!
I had tried everything to reconnect my 5-in-1 Wireless Weather Station (LOWSC510WB). Reset multiple times to no avail, spent hours researching how to download firmware updates (didn’t figure it out).
Until I realized that we got a new router. Turns out, this station won’t connect when the router security is set to WPA2/WPA3 or WPA3. Only WPA2-PSK and WPA/WPA2 work. So I had to downgrade to WPA2-PSK and the station is collecting data. In case anyone else was wrecking their brains.
Our router is TP link Archer AX21.
Being a new enthusiastic Tempest owner and software developer with too much time on his hands, I created a simple app that displays live data from my Tempest station. Nothing fancy: no historical data, no forecast. Just the raw data coming in live from the sensors.
I made it available for free on the App Store, for all Apple platforms (iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV):
https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6737360203
If there is enough interest, I might make the code open source on Github. Let me know! 🤓
I’m looking for a weather station that can measure the amount water in air in g/cm^3, for example. Thanks!
Hello!
I’m a new Tempest station owner, and am super happy about it!
I had an old iPad available that I wanted to hang on a wall and use as a console for my Tempest. Long story short, I ended up installing WeeWX and creating my own console-like skin for it. It has nice big numbers that can be seen from across the room, and it displays spark line charts of the past 24 hours so you can easily see the trends.
I am sharing it with this community, in case it might be useful to others: https://github.com/bourquep/weewx-me.teo
Feedback is welcome, either here or in the Github repository’s discussions.
Enjoy!

I installed an Ambient Weather system in the Seattle area. It is actively raining (enough to register in a glass outside).
My rain gauge says “0.00”, new system
Are there any set up tricks I could have missed or is it faulty?
Hive mind,
I am trying to connect my vevor 7-in-1 to weather underground. The sensor and head end station are on my wifi. It is reporting correctly. All that side is fine.
I've entered the station and key into the in product correctly but wunderground still shows as offline.
I wonder in the home firewall is blocking this but I do have other IoT devices that had no issues accessing remotely.
Does anyone know what the firewall configuration should be? Or what else I need to do? All I found is port 80 has to be open.
Thx
With its age do I need to worry about any batteries or power banks having gone bad? Anything else?
We've had an inexpensive indoor/outdoor weather temperature station with a console in our kitchen that has finally reached the end of it's useful life.
I was looking at getting either an EcoWitt 2910 or perhaps another station, but can't think of any good mounting options (we're surrounded by trees, house is fairly tall.
When I looked on weather underground, I see that one of my neighbors has a weather station that looks like it's pretty close to my house and gives data about as good as I would get from any of my mounting options.
Are there any consoles that you can just point to a weather underground station?
So far it seems like the easiest / cheapest path is to just set up my own weather station and try to find a decent enough spot for it.
I've read quite a few reviews on Amazon stating the battery fails pretty consistently after the 2 year warranty period has ended. Has anyone had a different experience?
Hi
Which weather station do you recommend for a cabin? I need wifi, temp, rain, wind, light.
Tempest and Ambient weather do not sell to Norway, so therefore I am thinking od buying the vevor 7-in-1 or ecowitt wh-2900
Do anyone have this? How is it?
How much maintenance is required for the rain gauge?
Thanks :-)
I've got brainrot. The parts for the mesonet are still coming in and im already thinking about a more portable system I can take on chases. Yes, I know single point sensors are scientifically useless without radar providing context for those measurements. Yes, I know to do this properly I need to do a sticknet, with a good quality leveling tripod (TTU uses a $700 one) and I'll need to fab parts for it. I know this is reddit. Please don't tell me everything I'm doing is worthless and that I'm just a larper who needs to get a life. I don't feel like the CR23X that I'm using for the mesonet would be completely necessary since I don't want to handle transmission and all that jazz. The two options ive thought about for loggers are the ebay CR10Xs ive found which would probably do the job but have like zero memory, and GPS would eat through that thing like me at a dunkin donuts. I've been told that adding extra memory is cumbersome too. I've also heard the operating system is as old, decrepit and crusty as a ballsack that hasn't been washed in three years, and it's a PITA to get data off of, especially if you don't have an SC32B adapter. The other option I was looking at was getting a quote from campbell about a new CR350/CR310, but the cost of that (especially for a college student who can only work during the summer) is off putting. I'm also not sure of the 10Hz sample rate would limit me, vs the CR10X which has 64hz or a 1000x which can do 1000hz. I'm still new to this thing so please be gentle.
Hey yall. I found this community and it seems like you guys really know your stuff, so I figured this is the place to ask.
I’m a student on a research project and my team is looking for a way to measure the amount of rainfall into our garden. I was wondering:
What is the best way to get accurate readings in your opinion? We were discussing setting up multiple measuring systems but not sure if this is necessary or worthwhile.
What rain gauge(s?) you would recommend? Our budget is $1000, so nothing crazy.
Thanks so much, looking forward to hearing what yall have to say.
Edit- also, we won’t be on site every day so it would be very preferable to have digital/automated readings
This seems like an odd situation but hoping someone else has encountered it.
Sainlogic weather station, about 2yrs old. Live in the sierras in CA so it gets warm (mid 90s) down to quite cold (-10 last year at coldest).
As of this year, my weather station loses connection when the temp drops below around 40, as we’ve moved into Fall that means every night. Then in the morning, as the sun warms it, it reconnects. This is happening very consistently everyday. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
I’m a bit of a tinfoil hat and most of my house is built underground. Cell/signals are poor to nonexistant in my house. All external signals are transmitted via hardwire to an antennae tower on the surface mounted on a small “outhouse/ chicken coop”. I was wondering what the best Wired /Cabled weather station was that’s available today. I just need a direct wired connection between the sensors and the display. Power supply source is flexible but the data has to be hardwired. Size isn’t a concern. I would like as complete of a suite of sensors as I can get. I’m open to new and used/second hand options but it has to be durable for fairly adverse weather conditions. All I can find is wireless and WiFi versions. Thanks people of Reddit in advance
