Hello everyone! This is a subreddit for the free and open source music notation software MuseScore!
Rules:
Please be productive in your posts
Please be respectful in comments and constructive criticism should OP ask for it.
Tutorials are welcome! There are links below to other subreddits that are certainly helpful for making music, but maybe not specifically to Musescore. Should you find a tutorial or create one of your own that would be helpful to the readers here, please post it!
There are no dumb questions, just the fear of being embarrassed. Don't know how to do something? Just ask! We're here to help, and if we can't, there's either someone who can or we'll find a link to help!
Preferably no memes or macros, there's a subreddit for classical memes already linked down below, and I'm sure they'd appreciate it. Memes are fun! Here is not the place for them.

I have a score in the key of Ab. The first note in the leftmost measure has a flat accidental. It's a bit crowded between a key signature flat and that first note flat so I'd like to shift that flat and notehead over a bit but not affect any other measures. How can I accomplish this?
I dug around a bit but I feel like I haven't found a similar post. I'm a music teacher and often end up composing for buckets. What I want to do is build three instruments (Soprano Bucket, Alto Bucket, Bass Bucket) so I can add them to any scores I'd like. But I can't figure out how to make the instrument exactly the way I'd like.
Without boring with specifics, my custom instrument would have change the appearance of note heads, the sound font used, the hotkeys of the .drm file as well as default note voicing. And then I could add these instruments to any of my scores through the instruments window. While I'm at it, adding default note colour would be great to add a boomwhacker instrument as well.
What's the easiest way to add to the instrument panel? Do I need to edit any .xml files?
i might also just be crazy, or have bad headphones (and sound like a dick when i say i have a VERY trained ear), but i have had to play around with what piano option works because the voices AND the grand piano are so out of tune. voices not pictured here but theres a horrible harmonic somewhere in the playback where I just want a pure tonic chord. it literally sounds like one of the hammers isn't playing correctly, which is funny because its a computer. this goes away with the upright piano option.
For whatever reason when I play my strings using the musehub strings, it goes to Bartok style and flips between that and normal. Any idea how to fix this???
Does anyone know exactly (or approxamtely!) what reverb settings Muse sounds use by default? E.g. convolution/studio - what impulse/room scale settings etc.
I'm exporting a score and adding my own instruments to them and would like to match the reverb as closely as possible. I know I could export them dry and add my own to everything, but I like the way they've balanced them, so it would be good to know anyway!
p.s. The Flair isn't completely appropriate, but it was the closest I could find! Maybe just 'question'?
Hi,
I've been looking to revitalize my hobby of playing the alto sax. and I wanted to know where I can get sheet music with a wide library of available sheet music. I'm not experienced in these types of websites, so when I naturally looked up sheet music, I came across Musescore. I've seen a sale for the Pro/+ Subscription, and I wanted to know if subscribing to this website is worth it for all of it's benefits.
Is it? Should I get a subscription on Musescore because of it's library size? Or is there a more accessible alternative to this? What are the benefits that I can't access without it?
I have a crescendo that attaches to this forte and it looks horrible because it passes through a double line, it won't disconnect no matter what I do
This bug is so annoying because it randomly just decided to start doing this today... on every score...

I've already tried reinstalling Muse Strings and Musescore in its entirety and nothing is working! Any help appreciated!
When I play this back or export the midi, these ties come back as individual notes. Am I doing something wrong or is that how it's supposed to be? Or maybe these are not actually ties?
Hello everybody, I want to transcribe some baroque guitar pieces in MuseScore 4 but I can't find the symbols I need (chord notation and spare notes to put above the staff and to use as strumming patterns, they were in MuseScore 3). Anybody knows how to find them?
The website made it seem like I was signing up for the FREE trial. However, after I checked out I found out I was signed up for a NO free trial PRO + subscription. It was WAY more expensive that I would have signed up for. I asked for a refund and was denied. Make sure you READ everything.
Could someone explain to me how the copyright services work? I’m composing some scores that I’d like to publish and make available but I also would like claim over my work.. when publishing through the MuseScore platform, how does this process go about? Is there anything I’d have to do outside of MuseScore or does it guide me through the licensing when I publish?
Hello! I don't know if this is possible, but when entering notes using a keyboard, is it possible to enter them using scale degree numbers? I.e., if I wanted to write "Mary Had a Little Lamb," I currently would have to type "EDCDEEE" in the key of C, or "FEDEFFF" in the key of D, so on and so forth. What I'm wondering is if it would be possible to type "3212333" and the program assign pitches based on the key signature. That way I don't have to think in terms of pitches, and I can have all of my notation keys in the same place (pitch entry with QWERTY feels really rough to me).
Anyway, thanks for any info y'all can give!
I want to make a chord chart in MuseScore. How do I enter just chords, where there are no notes or rests? 🤔
Hello all!
I'm wondering if there's any way in Musescore 4 that allows a barline containing both a key change and a left/right repeat sign to not 'split' like this (see photo attached, this was done with a 'single' L-R repeat sign).
I'd much rather have the key change to be after the L-R repeat sign, or even before. It's not score-breaking, of course, I just really don't like the way it looks when the key change is stuck in between.
Thanks in advance!
After 20 years i started playing piano again with the help of musecore. I do know how to read notes but i liked the keyboard concept of the floating notes supported by the Browser-Version of Musecore :) You don't even need an account to do this.
Browser:
So i got an iPad mini a few days ago and checked out the musecore application... I was kinda disappointed because the Usability ist just so bad. What is more bitter that there's no similar View for floating notes (like in the Browser) within the app ? Showing the keyboard is possible (with the Subscripton+ free trial) but there's no preview of the following notes. Do you guys know whether that's even possible or are there similar apps out there who support this ?
iPad App:
I'm taking my first music theory classes right now in college, and wanted to experiment in this program at the suggestion of my professor. I am writing a piece featuring an alto saxophone in an ensemble, but for some reason it always has extra sharps in the key compared to the other instruments. I'm just trying to keep it simple and write this in the key of C major with no sharps or flats unless specified; being a beginner, it feels easier to work with. Is there a way to fix this, or is this just how it's supposed to be and something I need to roll with as it is?
Im a self taught "composer" and I dont think my music sounds great. I feel like I need to just toss away my hobby and focus on something else. HELP!!?
Over the past few months I’ve found myself writing a number of percussion parts (duets, quartets, concert band parts, etc.) It would be really helpful it there was an “empty percussion staff” where you could add whatever instruments and sounds to that staff. Being able to customize vertical location and note head.
For example, I wrote a percussion quartet where one part uses Cymbal, Bongos, and Break Drum. If I could add select “empty percussion staff” and select a drop down to add those instruments it would save a lot of time rather than having to fight the “edit drumset” settings.
[For all of these parts in the past I’ve just used a piano part and customized the note heads to make it look the way I want.]
When ever I add buzz roll it doesn’t play it how do I fix it
I've moved the SoundFonts folder (that has the MuseHub Downloads) to a different path. It worked before. In order to use Muse Sounds again, I have to update the location of the files in the Muse Sounds Manager. However, I can't do that, since it crashes when I run it. Upon further investigation I found that it crashes because the program performs a check at startup, finds that the path where the files are supposed to be doesn't exist, throws a fatal error, and exits.
Since the Muse Sounds Manager doesn't work because of the wrong path, and I can only set the correct path in the Muse Sounds Manager, I have to find the config file and change it manually. I guess this could be considered a bug/complaint as well.
Every time i try to make an orchestral piece using VSTs Musescore can never save the sounds, i open up a project and it ends up crashing or having no sound and it really impedes on my orchestrations, it makes me feel like i don’t even want to do it anymore as it basically doesn’t work, when i do upload it the sound quality ends up breaking.
Is there anyway for Musescore to literally fix the VST and audio problems, the audio sounds fine in Muse Studio but terrible on the actual site.
How can I tie two notes with different length? Always when I click to tie notes musescore gives me two notes with same length.
Thanks!
I am struggling to get a consistent font size for the part names when I export my scores to PDF. How can I fix the font? As you can see from this image, it changes in size and boldness.

It's importing as a part of the "Percussion" instrument rather than a drum kit. Is there any way for me to copy simply the note places on the staff and paste it instead of whatever note it would be on that specific staff? for example copying an e from bass clef to middle c on treble except for percussion.

**EDITS** Swapped video out for a recorded session of the whole score, with exported MP3 added in video editor, for better sound clarity, and to showcase ALL of what's been written, so far...
If you don't want to sit through the whole thing, skip to 6:50 for Movement II... It's still incomplete, and I'm still open to feedback on finishing it up. Thanks, all!
