Transfer student with no idea how to meet people

Hey I’m a 21F transfer student who lives off campus and am having a difficult time meeting people. I’m a pretty chill person (I drink if there’s a reason to, I like to play video games, workout casually, I work a part time job, the rest of my time spend doing random creative stuff like baking or painting). I tried to join a club but didn’t really fit in. I’ve been to the bars a bit, it’s fun but I’d prefer a more house party scene. Any advice??

Transferring from CA community college to MSU

Hey yall, curious to know if anyone from a community college in California transferred to MSU.

My study is Psychology and my GPA is a 3.92, however will rise by the time I graduate. The reason MSU is of interest is because there are plans to move to Michigan next year.

Those who transferred, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Is it normal to follow an advisor's recommendations exactly, or can I plan my own schedule?

I'm feeling a bit unsure about my advisor's guidance. I'm a transfer student from out of US, and my tuition is significantly higher compared to other American students. Since I spent 2.5 years at another college in Asia, I’m trying to take 18–19 credits per semester so I can graduate from MSU in two years.

However, my advisor is discouraging me from taking such a heavy course load. It feels like he’s trying to extend my time here, which would mean more tuition revenue for MSU. My major is Computational Data Science, and I’ve already received secondary admission into the College of Engineering. From what I understand, I mainly need to complete 300–400 level courses from next sem, plus a few electives like IAH 200 and a bio elective.

Is it common for students to follow their advisor’s recommendations strictly, or is it okay to structure my schedule the way I want? I feel bad ignoring my advisor’s advice, but at the same time, I don’t want to waste time and money. How do you guys usually approach academic advising?

Also, do most students schedule a meeting with their advisor every semester, or is that not necessary?

I finished most of the pre-re last sem with about 3.8GPA which made me get into college of engineering with secondary admission even though I didn't to take CMSE 202 ( taking it right now). And I'm already taking 19 credit this semester but I feel like it's durable. My advisor started to keep emailing me to drop one of my classes. it's annoying...

Dear People Watchers,

What has been some of your favorite observations of people, in MSU and East Lansing? Do you have a favorite passerby that you frequently see? Any favorite scenes played out between people? Let's hear it.

Looking to interrogate someone in a co-op 👀

I’m thinking of joining a co-op for housing next year, and, as the title says, I’m looking for someone I can DM with questions about the experience. Thanks!

Questions regarding YouAreWelcomeHere (YAWH) Scholarship eligibility

So I just started working on the essay for YAWH and I want to make sure that I'm really eligible for it before grinding that 1000 words :,) I saw it in my admissions portal under "Invitations & Opportunities" and the guidelines only specify that you can't be a US citizen or a permanent resident (which I'm not). However, it also says that the scholarship "will cover $25,000 towards tuition annually," but I'm paying in-state tuition which is like 16k/yr so how does that even work xd. Again I know I probably sound paranoid af, just trying to make sure that I ain't grinding an essay for nothing lol... Thanks a lot for your help!!

CSE classes changing prereqs

As a computer engineering major graduating next fall, I already had my schedule planned out a while back and I wanted to take some CSE electives for my final semester which is next fall and I saw that by that point I would meet those requirements but upon checking for next fall and the course website of the university, they released a new description for the courses starting for next fall and a lot of them just changed their pre requisites to require CSE 380 which would cut off a lot of computer engineering majors. Why do they do this? It’s absolutely frustrating.

What’s an independent study like?

I’m in the process of organizing an independent study with one of my professors and I’m really excited but I was wondering what the experience is like??

Like do you tag along with one of their classes but have separate assignments?? Or do you meet with them occasionally and do work on your own time?

How many credits can you get from them?

Just wondering some basics of it so I can kind of know what I’m getting into!

This seems like a long shot...

My wife and I are MSU Alumni. A little while back she bought a secondhand Michigan State sweatshirt. It has a signature on it but we don't have any clue who's it might be. She's wearing it today so I figured maybe the hive mind here can figure it out. Any guesses?

Hi everyone,

I got my bachelors from MSU, but I've been out of school for a bit. Does anyone know if MSU offers a masters to become a Registered Dietician in the state/do you have links with helpful info? I'm struggling to find answers to my questions online. Thank you!!!

Spartan Cash

I’m new to actually using my Spartan Cash and I’m not sure which food spots ACTUALLY take spartan cash. Yes, I saw the list on the website, but I went to Little Caesar’s on Grand River and they told me they don’t take it. Are there any other places on the list that no longer take it? As well as places that aren’t on the list but do? Just so I don’t go to another place thinking they take Spartan Cash and then have to use real cash because they apparently don’t.😭

Transfer Student

I’m currently in my second semester at community college, hoping to complete the prerequisites for a computer engineering degree and transfer to state afterwards.

i’m looking at msu’s website for all the prerequisite classes, and there’s so many for computer engineering that i would have to spend three years at community college.

this is not desirable because community college is not very fun, plus my girlfriend and i plan to transfer to state together, and staying behind for an entire year while she leaves town semi-permanently sucks.

if anyone has any experience with this, i’m wondering if it’s possible to transfer to msu after two years of community college as a “general” student, finish the rest of the prerequisites at msu, and then apply to their college of engineering? would i have to switch my major? is any of this even possible?

any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

Dorms

I'm planning to go to MSU next year and I've seen the layout of the dorms and just about all I've seen were bunk beds. Are there any dorms with no bunk beds? If there isn't I'm just as fine with it.

Best Residence Hall for Incoming Freshmen

Hey everyone, I’m an incoming freshman at MSU for Fall 2025, majoring in Hospitality Business. I’m trying to figure out which residence hall would be the best choice based on student experiences.

  1. In your opinion, which hall is the best for freshmen in terms of location, social life, and overall experience?

  2. Is the Living-Learning Community worth it? Does it actually help with networking and academic opportunities, or would I be better off in a regular hall?

  3. Any specific recommendations for someone in Hospitality Business?

Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Thanks in advance!

Questions about First Year Seminar Abroad Costs and Scholarship Coverage

Hey everyone, I'm an incoming freshman at MSU and was looking into the First Year Seminar Abroad program. I have a few questions:

  1. What are the typical costs associated with the First Year Seminar Abroad?

  2. Is this program cost covered under the scholarships offered with my admission, or would I need to secure additional funding?

  3. For those who have attended, did you find it beneficial? What were your experiences like?

  4. Are there any specific details or hidden costs I should be aware of that may not be clear from the info they sent?

I appreciate any insights or advice from those who have participated or know more about it. Thanks in advance!

CSE 102 Transfer credit

Hello,

Does anyone know how to find a CSE102 class at a different college then MSU that will transfer over and be counted for msu’s (CSE 102). I need this credit to confirm Broads admission but wish to take it somewhere else; online or in person.

Has anyone done this?

Cooking class, yoga, and hip hop class?

Are there any cooking classes, yoga groups, or beginner hip hop dance classes on campus?

I'm aware of the hip hop dance teams, but the ones I found require you to have some skill already.
