Furries on campus

So just to start out... This fall I will be a freshman at MSOE. I'm a furry but I generally don't like to parade around with that information because some people will treat me like crap for it. So, I was just wondering, like, is there events where I could wear my suit and stuff? Or would that be frowned upon? Obviously, lol, im not gonna wear it to classes and stuff. But overall I was just wondering, what's like, the general attitude towards furries on campus?

$40 dental cleanings - no insurance needed! Great for students!

Hi students! If you feel like coming down the road, I’m a dental hygiene student at MATC and I need your help to graduate!

This semester it will be more beneficial for me to see those who regularly go to the dentist and are between 3-40 years old. But as time goes by, I will need a wide variety of folks! I have availability this semester Mondays 8am-12 and Wednesdays 1-5pm!

Screenings there is more flexibility with scheduling:

We have screening appointments so we can figure out how best to care for you!  These appointments can take 1-2 hours (Children between 3-17 do not need to be screened).  After we evaluate your needs, we can sign you up for a cleaning appointment which includes:

X-rays, oral cancer screening, cleaning, personalized care plan, polishing, and fluoride treatment!

Fair warning: As we are students, the appointments do take longer than they would going to a regular dentist since we have every step checked by our dentists . They are typically 3 hour appointments and depending on the complexity, it could take multiple appointments (usually 2-3) to completely finish your cleaning!

There is a one time fee at your first appointment:

Ages 13+: $40

Under 13: $30

All appointments are at our clinic at Milwaukee Area Technical College downtown!

700 West Highland Avenue

Milwaukee, WI

H Building, Room H115

Feel free to ask me any questions or if you’d like to get scheduled! And please share as I will need 45 patients to graduate! Thank you!!

Message me here or at (414) 395-5155 or fill out a short survey and I will get back to you!

Sophomore in HS thinking about scholarships

Hello! I'm a sophomore in hs and am thinking about scholarships colleges to go to when I graduate. Right now I want to go for a CS major although that may change to some sort of engineering considering the job market. I've taken 4 AP classes including PreCalc and CS Principals, also next year I am planning on taking loads of CS and engineering related classes. I have a 3.8 GPA (UW), a 29 PreACT score, and I'm a member of and competing in DECA, SkillsUSA, and my schools Robotics Club.

The two main colleges I've been considering so far are UWM and MSOE because I've heard great things about their CS programs and reputation. I'm wondering what kind of scholarships I could expect (I won't qualify for FAFSA even if the DoE isn't destroyed) and also how I could maximize my possibility for good scholarships or even being accepted.

Advice for students

Hello engineers, I’m a senior in high school and I’m planning on going into EE. Frankly I’m extremely anxious about this only due to the fact that I’m currently in pre calculus and struggling with certain topics. My plan is to take heavy advantage of office hours as well as free tutors in college to help me with my math courses. Does anyone have any advice for someone In my situation. What’s somthing you wish you knew before engineering school.

Grading

Hey guys

I have been reading some reviews online about MSOE and there is an overwhelming amount of negative ones that I have noticed. A lot of people complain about the grading and that right away in freshman year you need to do very well to keep your scholarships. Someone wrote that 70% is a D and 95% is a A. Just wondering if any students have some insight into how grading is, furthermore, people said that there are many issues with the faculty and no school culture besides being forced to study so much that you're depressed. MSOE is my top choice school and after reading those reviews I am getting a bit worried about it.

As far as I have researched and got to know Mose is known for it’s cs department, did not get much insight on mechanical so if anyone could give a slight peak, I would be grateful

Class of 2029

Hello,

I have been accepted for EE starting in the fall of 2025, I saw a mention of a discord server for class of 2029 which I would definitely want to join. Does anyone know where I could get the invite? Is that just part of the main MSOE server?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Placement test questions

I got “accepted” recently to MSOE, although i have been accepted i must get a 61 or higher on the ALEKS math assessment or i will not be admitted, what exactly is gonna be on there, how hard is it, how many questions are there, and what can i use on the test? It is important to preface that Iam not too good at math and am currently in precalc in my senior year.

Housing Rates

Can anyone else share their experiences with housing rate increases? At Grohmann Tower, (GT) there is a 30% increase for next year when compared to this year. I was just curious what the other buildings increases look like?

Additionally, the notifications for the new rates were slipped onto the end of an email, almost as an afterthought. Overall, really disappointed in the price hike and seemingly lack of transparency as to why.

Scholarships

Hello everyone reading this!

Im currently a sophomore in hs, and im quite interested in engineering. My current plans are UW platteville, maybe madison (idk), maybe MSOE. Right now Platteville is looking pretty sweet because of the minimal debt I would wind up in. So, the biggest con is cost. Now, I have no doubt I could get into this school if I work my butt off, issue as mentioned previously is the cost. My dad told me, I wont really qualify for any FAFSA, because he makes too much money for it to benefit me, but unfortunately not enough to send me to school. So, the big thing im looking for, what are the odds I could end up with a good scholarship with some of these things in mind that im about to list. Ill have taken 9 AP classes by the time I graduate, most notably related to mechanical engineering/engineering; Calculus BC, Both AP Physics C's(self studied) and Chem, and just some historys and psycology and english(all AP's). My father is an alumni of this school, which would grant me Legacy, hes also a 8 year veteran if that helps at all idk(something neat; he was the first veteran in the state of wisconsin to attend a private school). Last summer I worked as a "engineering assistant" at the company he works at. This next summer I will be doing stuff at his company again, this time I will be doing production line work. Then my last summer, I would be doing a youth apprenticeship program related to STEM. My biggest weakness is extra curriculars, the best thing I think I would have besides jobs is Skills-USA for 3 years. Im really introverted so that stuff is lowkey scary. Also, maybe say I have some pretty good essays too. Then finally, my GPA could maybe end up to be like 3.98 UW and like 4.4 W. Alright, so finally, concluding all of this do you think theirs a shot that I could end up with a good scholarship that will pay for a large portion of the cost?

One more thing, after getting my bachelors in mechanical engineering, I plan to attend grad school somewhere, like Iowa state for Aerospace engineering, my dream job is at some big aerospace company.

Thank you all for reading this mess of a paragraph!

Testing Center

Is anyone else having significant problems with the testing center? They have a new policy that requires tests to be scheduled 3 school days in advance. My teachers do not give me three school days before the test, usually it's one or two days. I spoke to a teacher about this, and she said that there was no way for her to know when the test is. I spoke to Angela about this, and she told me I just needed to remind teachers of the policy. What am I supposed to do? I need/rely on the testing center and it's accommodations but I am no longer "allowed" to use them.

Rolling admissions?

Rolling admissions at MSOE, right? Common App submitted late August, materials in about 3 weeks ago. How long until I hear a decision? How long until merit aid is offered? Will they reach out if I'm missing any materials? Seems like crickets, which I find odd.

ALEKS Test

How hard is the initial math placement test? I currently have pre calc but I just want to know how much calculus I should teach myself before going into the test.

MSOE Guaranteed Admission???

I have a friend that attended an MSOE engineering summer camp and he’s been nonstop talking about how he basically got accepted already to MSOE cause he attended that.

Is it true that he’s basically been admitted now? He got an 1160 SAT score and he’s taking Calc AB right now. That’s the only relevant information I know that would be considered for his application.

Edit. He has also done robotics and has taken many engineering type courses at our school. His interest is aerospace engineering.

CS job opps?

Hello. My son is considering msoe and leaning towards CS. Would love to hear from current and former students about how well prepared they were for a job after graduation and how does msoe do at bringing in top tech recruiters?

Grad life at MSOE - seeking info!

Hello!

Considering applying to MSOE for the M.S. Engineering program for Spring 2025 admission. I am out-of-state however, and I am worried about the price tag.

What's the university like? Does the level of education, network/research/post-grad opportunities, organizations, etc. warrant the cost? For context, I'm applying to other schools in the WI area, like UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee, as well, so feel free to compare those to MSOE (particularly UW-Milwaukee, since UW-Madison's reputation is much more known I feel).

Thanks!

Technology question (current students)

Hey all active students, returning student here(last attended in 2021). Just got my new laptop (thinkpad win 11) and curious how few things work.

First, downloading licensed apps (solidworks, matlab, ansys, etc..) How do I get those apps installed? I remember there used to be a library we would access from laptops to install licensed apps. Not sure if the system is the same.

Second, VPN. How does school VPN work? Can I still log into the VPN from home WiFi? How do I install school VPN?

Third, printers. I should be connected to local printers already, correct? I remember this always being an issue, so all advice is appreciated.

Lastly, canvas. Is Canvas still used for homework and classes? I remember blackboard was a thing at some point, but not sure how things are now.

I’m a junior mechanical engineering student and been away from school for quite a while. Really looking forward to picking back up.

Differential Equations textbook

For a variety of reasons, I wasn't placed into differential equations in my freshman year despite already completing the course in high school. Could someone send me the textbook that MSOE uses for the course, so I can study for it on my own and hopefully test out or get credit from a course from another college simultaneously or during the summer?

Classes location

Hi guys!! I had a question regarding the location of my classes. For personal reasons I have been on vacation most of the summer out of the country and I have not had the opportunity to visit the school and all the information I have is through email and phone calls. For this reason I do not know the location of my classes and I do not want to feel lost on the first day. Can someone explain to me what building this is? The index only says “science” but I don’t think it is very specific since I have tried to use the virtual map and, while the other acronyms are easy to understand, this one is different from the rest. Thanks!!!
