Testing Center

Is anyone else having significant problems with the testing center? They have a new policy that requires tests to be scheduled 3 school days in advance. My teachers do not give me three school days before the test, usually it's one or two days. I spoke to a teacher about this, and she said that there was no way for her to know when the test is. I spoke to Angela about this, and she told me I just needed to remind teachers of the policy. What am I supposed to do? I need/rely on the testing center and it's accommodations but I am no longer "allowed" to use them.

Is it really that difficult?

I’m planning on accepting my admission offer for MSOE computer engineering but the thing holding me back is the horror stories I’ve seen in comments here, forums, the urban dictionary etc. I understand it’s no longer highschool and studying and hard work is needed but is it actually that difficult? Will it be 4-5 hours of studying/labs daily?

Thank you

Rolling admissions?

Rolling admissions at MSOE, right? Common App submitted late August, materials in about 3 weeks ago. How long until I hear a decision? How long until merit aid is offered? Will they reach out if I'm missing any materials? Seems like crickets, which I find odd.

ALEKS Test

How hard is the initial math placement test? I currently have pre calc but I just want to know how much calculus I should teach myself before going into the test.

MSOE Guaranteed Admission???

I have a friend that attended an MSOE engineering summer camp and he’s been nonstop talking about how he basically got accepted already to MSOE cause he attended that.

Is it true that he’s basically been admitted now? He got an 1160 SAT score and he’s taking Calc AB right now. That’s the only relevant information I know that would be considered for his application.

Edit. He has also done robotics and has taken many engineering type courses at our school. His interest is aerospace engineering.

CS job opps?

Hello. My son is considering msoe and leaning towards CS. Would love to hear from current and former students about how well prepared they were for a job after graduation and how does msoe do at bringing in top tech recruiters?

Grad life at MSOE - seeking info!

Hello!

Considering applying to MSOE for the M.S. Engineering program for Spring 2025 admission. I am out-of-state however, and I am worried about the price tag.

What's the university like? Does the level of education, network/research/post-grad opportunities, organizations, etc. warrant the cost? For context, I'm applying to other schools in the WI area, like UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee, as well, so feel free to compare those to MSOE (particularly UW-Milwaukee, since UW-Madison's reputation is much more known I feel).

Thanks!

Technology question (current students)

Hey all active students, returning student here(last attended in 2021). Just got my new laptop (thinkpad win 11) and curious how few things work.

First, downloading licensed apps (solidworks, matlab, ansys, etc..) How do I get those apps installed? I remember there used to be a library we would access from laptops to install licensed apps. Not sure if the system is the same.

Second, VPN. How does school VPN work? Can I still log into the VPN from home WiFi? How do I install school VPN?

Third, printers. I should be connected to local printers already, correct? I remember this always being an issue, so all advice is appreciated.

Lastly, canvas. Is Canvas still used for homework and classes? I remember blackboard was a thing at some point, but not sure how things are now.

I’m a junior mechanical engineering student and been away from school for quite a while. Really looking forward to picking back up.

Differential Equations textbook

For a variety of reasons, I wasn't placed into differential equations in my freshman year despite already completing the course in high school. Could someone send me the textbook that MSOE uses for the course, so I can study for it on my own and hopefully test out or get credit from a course from another college simultaneously or during the summer?

Classes location

Hi guys!! I had a question regarding the location of my classes. For personal reasons I have been on vacation most of the summer out of the country and I have not had the opportunity to visit the school and all the information I have is through email and phone calls. For this reason I do not know the location of my classes and I do not want to feel lost on the first day. Can someone explain to me what building this is? The index only says “science” but I don’t think it is very specific since I have tried to use the virtual map and, while the other acronyms are easy to understand, this one is different from the rest. Thanks!!!

PC in MLH

Hello, I'm an incoming student placed in MLH and was wondering if there was enough room to bring a pc? it's pretty big tbh but I feel like if i put my PC on the floor then I'd have enough desk space for the monitor, kbm, etc.

Today my transact balance has increased and is saying that I have to pay for the summer semester. I wasn’t enrolled for the summer semester and financial aid still hasn’t responded. Has this happened to anyone else?

What's the level of management on MSOE-provided laptops?

I know they give us licenses and whatnot, but can I install my own software too and be the admin? Coming from high school where they didn't let me do nothing. I just want remote desktop to my PC.

Packing dining hall food

I was wondering if it’s allowed to take food from the dining halls back to the dorms to eat later. If not, does anyone actually check?

Transition From Calc AB to Calc II

I received a 4 on the AP Calc AB exam and was given the option to go directly to Calc II. Does Calc AB generally provide a good enough foundation to go straight to Calc II?

BME vs mechanical ?

I'm an incoming freshman and originally I was thinking of going into biomedical engineering (with a plan to do the AI track) I am interesting in the medical aspects of it, but I came across the option to minor in biomedical engineering.

Would I be better off majoring in mechanical engineering with a minor in biomedical engineering or sticking with a biomedical degree with the Al? Thoughts?

Air conditioning

I’m an incoming freshman and I’m gonna stay in MLH. I noticed there’s no AC, I also noticed MSOE doesn’t allow you to bring your own. Is this an actual strict rule or can you sneakyly get away with it?

Is the curriculum rigorous?

Hello, I'm an incoming freshman and I chose Cs as my major and I heard that msoe standards for tests is very high and 70% is considered as D grade and the average gpa is 2.5 and I am an international student, first year topics in math I'm very familiar with I just want to know about the level of difficulty

Textbooks for Calc 2 and 3

I’m an incoming freshman, and for a variety of reasons, I won’t be able to start out with Calc 2 even though I was exempt from Calc 1 due to my SAT score. I know that I’ll be bored out of my head with Calc 1 because I took advanced integral calculus at an international high school, so was wondering what textbooks Calc 2 uses so I don’t waste all the time I’m enrolled in Calc 1 for.

Calculus

Hello! I will be starting this fall at MSOE this fall as a transfer student from MATC. If I took calculus 1 on the spring semester, do I need to make a test at MSOE just so they can make sure I learned what was taught there? Thanks
