New Rider Advice and Bike Suggestions!

Hi I’m new here! The advice I’m looking for is two-fold. I’m looking for advice on what to get for a first bike as well as ways to save up. That’s an incredibly simplified version of what i’m asking, so read below if you’d like and i’m sorry, i know there’s a lot!

I’m a new rider in ND (from MN I just go to college in ND) BUT IM TRANSFERRING TO UW MADISON!!!!!!. I’m planning on taking my MSF course and permit test decently soon. I’ve had dirtbikes growing up but none over 250cc. I haven’t ridden a motorcycle in around 2 years though, but have kept up driving manual cars pretty frequently (kind of translates kind of doesn’t). Im not much of a risk taker and tend to be an incredibly safe driver. If this matters- i’m 5’8, 130 lbs, female, and have a 32” inseam (if this matters for bike selection)

I’ve started looking into motorcycles recently but i’m not sure what I should start on. Everyone online sounds like a broken record with R3s, CFMOTO 300/450s, Ninja 300/400s, and cbr300s. Everyone I know that has owned one of these normally upgrades after a season of riding and sometimes even sooner.

I’m not sure if I should follow their path, as I also know people who have bought 500/600cc bikes and have been fine and lived to tell the tale.

I’m really interested in a 2013 Kawasaki ZX6R that is for sale near me. I’m not sure if this is a good idea or a terrible idea. I have a few friends with bikes and their advice is pretty split. I want to lessen the idea of me having to upgrade so quickly, as the value of a bike will decrease as I ride it more often and then selling it will mean I get less money than I spent. My dad is also unsure of what I should do and he’s had bikes since he was 16 and started on a Honda Shadow 500, and had only ridden cruisers, classics, and harley’s.

I want to lessen the chance of having to upgrade my bike decently fast. I am working 60 hours a week to pay rent, pay off some money I took out of my savings account for maintenance on my truck, buying groceries, and taking summer classes… all while attempting to save for a motorcycle, gear, and my MSF course. It’s definitely been a struggle but I’m dedicated to get a bike by the end of June/July and am still $6k (minimum) away from my goal. I’ve tried everything to get extra money but I’m not sure of any other ways to raise money for a bike. One of my friends decided to Venmo me $20 to help me save up for a bike which helped more than he could ever understand, and I greatly appreciated that. I can’t seem to find any side jobs or anything that would work for me, I can’t put extra miles on my vehicle because I’m getting close to my warranty ending at 70k miles, and most odds and ends jobs in my area seem sketchy and fake, and I’m a 20 year old female, so this is definitely off putting. By the time I have enough money for a bike it’ll be August. And riding season ends shortly after that.

And I know this is a stretch but if anyone wants to help out a future biker my venmo is terbear7 I know that’s kind of terrible to post but I’ve exhausted almost every other option. I work a desk job 50/week ($10/hour) and babysit for 10 hours ($40/day) on the weekends. None of the server jobs in my town are currently hiring and I’ve been looking at job listings every day to no avail.

I’m also mostly looking for advice on what to get for a bike. I want something slightly unique but still well known enough to where maintenance would not be incredibly difficult. My price limit is $5k (or up to 6k if I end up actually getting a third job). I’m looking for a used clean title sport-bike (can be a naked bike) with less that 20k miles. I want something 400 cc or above.

I want honest opinions- I’m willing to take any and all advice.

Also I’m sorry about the Venmo thing, I’m not just posting on here to beg for money I promise. I’ve wanted a bike since I was a kid and at the beginning of May my dad finally agreed to the idea of me deciding to save up and purchase one. I have pictures of me as a little kid on my dads Harley, he used to drive me to school every day in the warmer months on his bike and I was so happy. I’ve always dreamt of having a bike and now that I have the go-ahead, it’s all seeming so much more real. I’ve done my research, watched countless videos on bikes, gear, and the basics of riding.

If you made it this far, thank you so much for reading everything. It means the world to me. I appreciate any advice you can give!!

Getting Started - How does it work?

I am looking to start motorcycling this summer as a Wisconsin resident. What are the steps? Is there a specific order things should be done in? I am 24 years old.

  1. Do I need my learners/instructional permit to actually purchase a motorcycle and what does the permit process look like? If not, is there a deadline by which I need this after the purchase and Is the permit typically needed to insure the bike? I am waitlisted for a July motorcycling basics course, but hoping to get practicing before then.

  2. What additional things must be done once I have the bike (legality wise)? Thinking registration, insurance and full M class licence, anything else?

Thank you for the advice and explanations, have not dealt with these things since I got my class d license. Trying to get my plan figured out!

Any ride groups in southeast Wisconsin?

Looking for some riders that love to ride and Adventure. I’ve been riding for 2 years now and I have no friends that actually ride so I barely ride but I’m looking into riding and traveling through Wisconsin and neighboring states.

Best city to spend a night in to ride

So basically I'm planning a short riding trip next year, as I live in Milwaukee but want to ride on some twisty roads. I'm planning on getting a hotel in sw Wisconsin, but I'm wondering what the best place to do that would be.

I'm thinking someplace near Richland center or gays mills. Anyone know what the road conditions are like around there? I'm also open to options if someone has done something similar. Looks like NW Wisconsin has some good roads too. But that would be a longer drive for just a weekend trip.

TIA

Best riding roads in Wisconsin.

TL:DR- name your favorite riding roads in the state

Did a loop up north last week Hit two of my favorite roads and discovered another that makes the top 5.

I live near LaCrosse and have easy access to the Driftless Area, so I have no shortage of great roads in my backyard.

162 from Four Corners to Middle Ridge. 33 and Wildcat Mt to Hillsboro. Etc etc.

But my favorite two roads take some saddle time

Delta-Drummond Rd (FH35) from Drummond to the Delta Diner is sublime

And Hwy 55 from Crandon to Keshena (preferably running north to south) it just gets better and better over that 60 miles.

And my new nominee is CtH F/FF from Butternut to Mercer. Another one that just keeps getting better.

So post up your favs so we can come ride them with you!

Finally a weekend with good enough weather to get a real ride!

Been a cold, wet, crappy spring this year.

Blame me, I bought a new bike..

I’m thinking about riding up the GRR to Pepin to have lunch at The Garden Pub and Grill. Up WI side and down MN side. (150 mile round trip)

Who’s else is riding this weekend? Where to and what’s your plan?
