Asshole cyclists

To the older lady cyclist who wouldn’t even stop for a second after I waved at her asking for a pump, next to Atwater market on Lachine canal around 3PM:

  1. You are the reason most people think cyclists are a bunch of assholes. I hope you find peace and work on whatever made you a bitter, old person.
  2. Karma is a b%*tch, tomorrow it can be you who is stranded in negative temperatures with a flat tire.
  3. If hell is real, it’s populated by your kind, condemned to ride the rustiest bike in the worst weather conditions.

Thank you to the nice lady at Quantum Ebikes for letting me use their pump.

Moving to Montreal in January

Heya

I’m moving from London to Montreal soon and I had a packing question.

I’m a fairly new road cyclist but i am absolutely hooked.

I’ll be packing a container to ship all my belongings from London but that’ll take about 2.5 months to arrive; I’m therefore debating

  1. putting the bike and the home trainer in my container (because that’s a lot of weight and voluminous bags to carry on top of enough clothes to get me through winter)

  2. flying with the bike and putting the trainer in the container (i’ll save 1 suitcase I guess) - but then would i really be able to ride outside on 25mm tyres form Jan til end of March?

  3. Or fly with both but then pay a fortune in excess baggage

and if i fly with both, i guess that’ll be my most nervous unpacking as id probably be packing the bike in a cardboard box - but that’s a different problem….

any advice would be much appreciated! i’ve been to Montreal during winter but not as a cyclist so not sure what to expect

thank you!

Y'all putting your studded tires on yet?

I put mine on last night and it was awesome ( first year with them ) but looking at the week, mostly melting and freezing but not much snow. Should I put my race kings back on you think?

Physiotherapist or clinic to address leg asymmetry - your recommendations?

I am looking for an experienced physiotherapist who could address leg asymmetry issue (power, range of motion etc..) due to broken femur (bike crash). Now when I cycle, I overuse the none injured leg (have dual sided power meters) leading to hamstring issues and less smooth pedaling. I have recently had a bike fit, but, I believe, I now need more physio. Would appreciate help finding someone or clinic that's good. Thanks...

Is le petite voie du fleuve still open?

Hi all, I was under the impression the petite voie du fleuve and the Écluses de Saint Lambert closed around mid November, but I just checked the website and it is now stating it's open until December 9th? Can anyone confirm this?

I'm on South Shore, I have a day off tomorrow when my husband is working and my kid is at school, and I am desperate to go for a scenic joy ride by myself after 3 weeks of being pretty sick. I want to tie it in with a visit to some art supplies shops in Montreal too. If it's closed though, I might go to Chambly instead.

What the website is currently stating; https://www.parcjeandrapeau.com/en/south-shore-bike-link-route-verte-montreal/

Ordinateur Garmin

Bonne route!

Home insurance that covers bike theft?

We're in the process of shopping for a home insurance and I'd like to find an insurance that covers bike theft (at home and outside). Ideally something that covers at least 2k. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Edit: to be clear, we are looking for insurance as tenants.

Wax Chain for Winter Commuter?

Is a waxed chain more beneficial than a lubed chain for a winter commuter? Or any lube + degreaser recommendations?

I'm not the most diligent person in taking care of my chain. I find degreasing & cleaning the chain cumbersome in the winter and it's usually still filthy after degreasing. I usually clean 1-2x/month (I know I have to do more), using the Parktool chain cleaner tool + Parktool degreaser + Muc-Off wet lube. I usually go through one (maybe two) chains yearly for my commuter bike.

This black Friday, I might plan on splurging a bit for a wax chain set up

Hey fuckers! Take your bike out this weekend!

A bit of cold and everyone hibernates eh? I'll admit, practically having the whole bike path to myself these past few weekends has been nice though.

It's not too cold once you start moving! Go for a ride this weekend!

What is your winter commutes like?

I’m visiting from Kansas City Missouri and I love the bike scene here in Montreal!

I’m a year round commuter and we do have some cold days but our winters are pretty mild overall. I ride with a merino base warm wick away midlayer and a windbreak layer. I swap my tires for top contact winters. My current commute is 20-25km.

What is it like winter commuting here? What sort of gear do you use? Do you prefer studded or just a good winter tire? How far is your commute? Is it mostly or protected lanes?

Thanks! I’m looking forward to another that can be a little more bike focused!

Merci

non-studded winter tyres (Conti Top Contact Winter)

I've been hearing a lot of opinions of cyclists who say that studded tyres aren't all that great if you don't consistently ride on ice and if you live in an area that plows snow and salts relatively frequently. Made me want to go for a winter specific tyre without studs. Can't really find anything other than Continental Top Contact Winters out there, everything else that is not studded but sorta suitable for winters seem to be all-season tyres (Marathon GT365, Michelin Stargrip). Was also surprised that the Conti TCWs were actually more expensive than many studded and all season tyres out there. Was wondering if the TCWs are worth it. I hear that one wipe out on ice will make you wish you had studs but at the same time, it's not like performance is all that better right? As in you still have to be very careful and barely lean at all when cornering. I'm thinking maybe the slower speeds and rougher ride could actually be worth it.

New longest ride (mtl -> nyc)

Had to be in NYC two weeks ago for work and decided to ride down there. I guess the jury is out if this counts as a single ride, since I stopped to sleep for a few hours in Albany 😂

Overall, the Empire State trail is pretty pleasant (especially the southern half) and if anyone is looking for a cool bike trip, I def recommend this one!

Looking for shops that sell colorful wheel lights

Hi there.

I want to get some lights to attach to my bike wheels that can glow in different colors at night. I know lights like this already exist on Amazon, but first I'd like to check out local options rather than send all my money to Jeff Bezos.

Can anyone recommend me any local stores around Montreal that sell these sorts of lights?

Témoins accident

Bonjour,

Transporting bike from Quebec to Montreal

I'm cycling to Quebec City and wondering how I can transport my bike back. Any bus companies that will take it? It seems like the new VIA Rail trains have bike racks, but are those even in service yet and will they let me on? Do I need to box it up?

Thank you.
